Petra, located in Jordan, was constructed in the 6th century BC by the Nabateans and was their capital city. It is carved out of sandstone cliffs and contains structures like temples, tombs, and a theater. For centuries, Petra lay hidden and was lost to the outside world until the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt rediscovered it in 1812. It features intricate carvings and structures cut into rose-colored rock faces, and was used as a location in the Indiana Jones film.
