The EPO's decision to allow patenting of natural plant properties has set alarming bell among plant breeders and farmers in various parts of the European Union. According to reports the decision is going to have a long-lasting impact on the European Fruits and Vegetable Market as it will put an end to further innovation in the breeding sector and the development of new plant varieties will come to a halt. Since the decision came into existence, multinational giants such as Syngenta and Monsanto have bought so many patents that can lead to dangerous monopoly of plant patents. Viewing the seriousness of the matter and its long term consequences the European People‘s Party (EPP Group) in the European Parliament is all set to table a Resolution in which they will call on the European Commission to finally tackle this problem.
