Yesterday’s graphic designers are today’s UX designers. Will tomorrow’s UX designers be avatar programmers, fusionists, and
artificial organ designers? Yes, according to the illustrious roster of design leaders we spoke with here.
Design has matured from a largely stylistic endeavour to a field tasked with solving thorny technological and social problems,
an evolution that will accelerate as companies enlist designers for increasingly complex opportunities, from self-driving cars
to human biology. Over the next five years, design as a profession will continue to evolve into a hybrid industry that is
considered as much technical as it is creative.Wait! What jobs will be safe from robots?
Martin Ford, futurist and author of Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future, classifies resilient jobs.
The first is jobs that involve “genuine creativity, such as being an artist, being a scientist, developing a new business strategy”.
Ford notes: “For now, humans are still best at creativity but there’s a caveat there. I can’t guarantee you that in 20 years a
computer won’t be the most creative entity on the planet. There are already computers that can paint original works of art. So,
in 20 years who knows how far it’s going to go?”
The second area is occupations that involve building complex relationships with people: nurses, for example, or a business
role that requires you to build close relationships with clients.
The design and fashion-led creative business of tomorrow requires bright minds who think different, break rules, challenge,
dare and are not afraid to tread alone. Careers in the creative industries are a viable, satisfying and lucrative alternative to the
more traditional industries of yesteryears. The following pages are a narrative of some of the choices in the creative industry
and about some young professionals who are optimising their potential in the same.
DESIGN
INTERIOR DESIGNER
An interior designer requires more than imagination. An Interior Designer composes
the elements which define space and create a balance between aesthetics and
functionality. An individual must understand fire and building codes and how to read
blueprints and architectural details.
He/she meets with clients to understand their wishes and needs. This includes asking
clients about their style preferences and budget. The designer envisions a design plan
based on the clients' budget and needs. Interior and spatial designers are involved in
the design or renovation of internal spaces, including structural alterations,
furnishings, fixtures and fittings, lighting and colour schemes. Further specialisation
can be pursued in environmental, residential or commercial design, such as
restaurants or health care buildings. The designer may focus on kitchens, indoor
gardens or closets. Becoming an Interior Designer and Design Consultant involves
enrollment in a college or university programme followed by several years of
professional experience, typically under the supervision of a qualified Interior
Designer.
Heena Abrol
I did my graduation in Interiors and Furniture Design. The practical aspect of working in
the industry has been very good. It has been extremely important in providing me
confidence and a broader viewpoint to approach the field of interior designing. I have
availed the opportunity to achieve goals not with an individual vision but with teamwork.
Today people are placing a lot of importance on how their homes look and an Interior
Designer is placed well to help them fulfill this desire.
AWeb Designer designs web pages and concentrates on the look and feel of a website.
Designing, developing and conducting initial testing of websites, applications and
various components are all part of his job.Among technical qualifications, knowledge
of HTML, CSS, MySQL, Database, Flash and Web Server Administration, are a must.
A good sense of design and an eye for detail are essential for web designing. As
internet has become more and more a part of our lives, the requirement of good web
designers is growing exponentially. Freelance work and starting one's own web
design company also find favour with many professionals. Experienced Web
Designers get a chance to handle big projects and work with top search engines and
internet retailers.
WEB DESIGNER
Varun Kaushik
I have always been inclined towards designing and computers. I chose to be a Web
Designer. Pearl Academy played a very important role in building the foundation of my
career. I have designed many sites starting from the website of Pearl Academy to many
other educational and fashion websites. The influence of internet has spread beyond the
confines of the online world and has affected every aspect of our lives. Therefore, I believe
the opportunities in future are endless.
The brand reflects everything about a company — its products, values and goals. Brand
designing entails creating a personal identity for an organisation or product. Image
designing includes creating logos, stationary, signages and any kind of visuals for
presenting the company's image to the public. Image/Brand Designers create the
identity of a firm and hence are important for its future business.
Innovative and unique ideas as well as concepts are essential in this field. Knowledge
of software and the ability to draw is also important.Such designers must have a vision
and the ability to think in the future as well as put oneself in the shoes of the general
public or client. As a career, one could get a start as an executive and then move up the
ranks to lead a team that creates designs for brands.
IMAGE & BRAND DESIGNER
Copal Mathur
I have done Communication Design Course from Pearl Academy. I came here as a
confused person, but Pearl transformed me into a confident Communication Designer.
Through this course, I was able to build a skill level and a way of thinking that has helped
me establish myself in the industry.
Visual Merchandising (VM) is the art of presentation whereby Visual Merchandiser
conceptualizes designs and implements window and in-store displays for retail stores.
This exercise educates the customers, creates desire and finally adds to the selling
process. Visual Merchandisers collaborate with store managers to create an
appropriate setting and display of items.
Choosing the appropriate light effects as well as arranging signs and displays for
promotional events are also their task. For this, knowledge of display, colours,
patterns, floor settings, window designs and furnishings is required. A good
understanding of current market trends and innovative visual approaches is extremely
important. Visual Merchandisers with retail experience are very much in demand in
the fashion industry as aesthetics and sensibilities of a store or at an event make a
huge difference to the marketing of products and fashion lines. There are many allied
fields that can expand the scope for a visual merchandiser. Exhibition displays,
birthdays,set design (theatrical sets included),theme parties,hotel lobbies,home and
wedding decorations are some of these areas.
VISUALMERCHANDISER
Priyanka Sachdeva
I have done Bachelors in Fashion Design. I opted for Visual Merchandising as a career
because space design and management is far more captivating. Instead of designing just
clothes, I chose to design an appealing shopping experience for consumers. Visual
Merchandising as a field is on the path of development and recognition. I am working as
Manager, Visual Merchandising, with Adidas. Every day is an enriching and learning
experience.
Product Designers improve existing products and try to reduce production costs. They
are also involved in designing new products. Working on design briefs and
introducing improvisations along the way is a creative job that requires an eye for
detail and in-depth understanding of various aspects of production, technology and
markets.
A broad understanding of the products, materials used, manufacturing processes,
branding, marketing techniques and competition is a necessity for Product Designers.
Both theoretical and practical knowledge should be present in such professionals.
Being aware of the needs of clients is also a must.Any business that wants to grow and
expand requires the services of Product Designers to improvise their produce and
methodologies used.Product design managers, innovators and manufacturers are the
roles that have come up over the years.
PRODUCTDESIGNER
Vidisha Singhal
I turned my passion into profession. I design for love and not for money and this is what
has kept me going. As a freelancer, I have worked with some wonderful clients like Pepsi
Co., Parag Milk, Community Empowerment Lab and The Terai Tiger Trust, to name a few.
Each assignment has helped me grow tremendously. Currently I am working with B & V
Design Pvt Ltd. It's been a fabulous journey that started with experimenting and having
fun in college to facing real clients in the real world and now designing for brands from
across the country.
Interactive Media Designers create the overall look and feel of a wide range of

a manner that surpasses expectations. An Interactive Designer works as part of a
project team as it develops an application or website. He/ She forms a design strategy
based on the client's goals, sketches out the primary interfaces, creates prototypes and
stays informed on current trends to keep the application or website on the cutting
edge of technology and design.
INTERACTIVE DESIGNER
Niyanta Puri
I wanted to become an Interactive Designer maybe because of the fact that I had loads of
images and feelings that I wanted to communicate in a different way than traditional
visual communication. Besides, I am a curious person by nature. Hence, I take interest in
everything that is new and seems challenging.Today I have started my own firm, Double
Click Designs, and I see a lot of scope for an Interactive Designer in near future, especially
in the corporate world.
Exhibition Designers deal with a range of three-dimensional designs like designs of
stalls, pavilion and overall interiors of trade fairs and exhibitions; sets for theme
events like beauty pageants, musical concerts, award ceremonies; interiors and
ambience for art exhibitions; product merchandising; and even design of movie sets
and theatre sets.
Exhibit Designers get jobs in museums, boutiques, apparel jewellery stores and with
Fashion Designers. They get immense opportunities at the time of fashion shows, big
exhibitions and trade fairs. Set Designers create sets for movies, plays, televisions,
photoshoots and fashion shows. They specialise in creating the environment for films,
theatre or the fashion world, and their creative ideas are the foundation for the look
and feel of the finished event.

Creating visual components for advertisements, television, films, magazines and
other printed materials, books and comics, is the work of a Graphic Designer. It
involves developing creative ways to capture the idea, essence and emotion of what
the client wants to portray through visuals to the world at large.
Learning how to use graphic design programmes such as Adobe Photoshop,Illustrator
and PageMaker is required. Graphic Designers need to understand client
requirements and give presentations with unique and innovative ideas. Creative
thinking, print design and layout, and web design, are other skills that these
professionals must have. Publication houses, media agencies, print media and other
creative fields need the services of Graphic Designers for creating visuals.
Independent work on project basis can also be taken up in this field.

for us to extend our creativity.
Interior Stylists and Design Consultants plan the design of living and commercial
environments. They need to design a space that is practical for its purpose as well as
visually pleasing.Projects can be broad in scope, ranging from structural alterations to
the choice of furnishings, curtains, wallpaper and lighting.
The role includes working to a brief, which details what the space will be used for;
researching and drawing up rough plans; and developing detailed designs and
choosing materials.Companies that create spaces for people to live, shop, work and be
entertained are all possible employers. For instance - architectural firms, interior
design companies, exhibition centres and events management companies. Stylists
work largely on editorial projects, making rooms or sets look amazing for beautiful
photographs that appear in magazines and catalogues. Some of them may do styling
work for residential and commercial interiors too.

Space is a reflection of its inmates.Ablank room can be transformed into a grand spectacle
by mere reflection of a few ideas. With this belief, I started Paradise 6, where we make a
difference. Each collection is crafted with an attention to detail in terms of design, colour
and technique. I try to break the stereotypes in design revealing creativity and untapped
possibilities under this brand name.

create an illusion of movement. The basic skills of animation are creativity and the
artistic ability of the Animator to visualise the sequence of images in such a manner

natural flow and other inputs in a general way. I am working as an Executive Director with
ABM Communication Pvt Ltd. This field has a lot to offer. Economy is growing day by day
and people are spending more than before in advertising.
Photography is an art of self-expression. Photographers use their technical expertise,
creativity, and composition skills to produce and preserve images that visually tell a
story or record an event. To create commercial quality photographs, photographers
need both technique and creativity. A Professional Photographer usually works on a
brief given by the client or employer. Examples of image content include fashion,
food, architecture, corporate photography, war zones, landscapes, wedding, family
and baby photographs.
Most Professional Photographers specialise in one area, such as fine art, fashion,
advertising, editorial or social photography. Around most of all Professional
Photographers are self-employed. The rest work for a wide range of employers,
including creative business, publishers and photography agencies or in the education
or public sector.
PROFESSIONAL
PHOTOGRAPHER
Abhishek Wadhwa
I studied Professional Photography from Pearl Academy. After graduating I worked with
some production houses. I learnt a lot while at Moksha Productions. With the urge of
wanting to do something out-of-the-box I started my own company called The Film Maker
three years later. Through this venture I want to create memories with each shot for my
customers.
These professionals transform the appearance of an individual with the help of various
makeup techniques and products and provide them the required look to appear in
front of a camera or a live audience for a performance or social event. To be successful
as a Makeup Artist, one must be artistic, knowledgeable about makeup, flexible and
proactive. A Makeup Artist ensures that models, performers and presenters have
suitable make-up and hairstyles before they appear in front of cameras or an audience.
Makeup Artists are required in the media world for film, live music, photography
shoots, television and theatre.Aspirants interpret the make-up requirements of clients
to produce both a creative and technically accurate visual representation. This may
involve very basic make-up for a TV presenter to a more complex make-up for special
effects.
MEDIAMAKEUPARTIST
Ashima Kapoor
I completed my graduation in History from JMC, followed by a Diploma in Fashion & Media
Makeup from Pearl Academy in association with Developments at London Institute (DALI)
at London College of Fashion. While I am teaching at Pearl Academy, I am also a freelance
makeup artist and hairstylist. My work has brought me accolades in magazines such as,
Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, FNL, to name a few.

Photo Journalist take photographs to record news, current events and lifestyle stories.
They aim to capture the best images which document an event, tell a story or convey a
message and support the printed word. The pictures are then reproduced in
newspapers, magazines and online.
He/she must cultivate flair for investigating and telling a story, using both images and
words to convey the message. Also have excellent technical skills, using digital and
non-digital cameras and industry-standard software such as Photoshop. The ability in,
and knowledge of, video, taking into account video packages on various newspaper
websites is another important skill to possess.
Photo Journalists often work for magazines rather than newspapers, and can work on
a project over a long period of time. Provincial daily or evening papers, one of the
weeklies, or an agency are other effective places to work.
PHOTOJOURNALIST
Rajwant Rawat
My career as a Photo Journalist has been full of adventure, risk and hard work. No matter
whatthesituation,aPhotoJournalist hastobeonthespottocapturethemoment.Inevery
assignment there are new challenges to overcome which makes the job exciting. Being
alert and prompt are bonus skills for this profile. Since nothing is pre-planned the Photo
Journalist must be thorough with the use of all the equipment.
Fashion journalism is a very interesting career in which one gets to write about the
fashion world. It involves a whole lot of activities — interviewing designers, reporting
fashion news in newspapers, magazines, television and online; judging new styles
and trends; predicting future trends; attending fashion shows and weeks.
As they can influence people's fashion choices and styles with their writings, it is
important for Fashion Journalists to have good fashion sense. They must read a lot of
fashion magazines and be informed about latest trends in the international fashion
scene. Knowing fashion terminology such as names of fabrics, cuts, styles, designs,
embroideries, accessories and other jargon — firsthand practical knowledge in these is
the key.
Various opportunities are present for professionals in this field like fashion critics,
fashion reporters, fashion photographers and fashion writers are some of them.Being
a competitive field, fashion journalism has abundance of roles for creative writers who
want to explore the fashion world.
FASHIONJOURNALIST
Asmita Aggarwal
It has been 25 years in journalism for me. Momentous, arduous and challenging are
different ways I can describe it. As the editor of a 100 year old French fashion magazine,
L'Officiel I realised that we underestimate the intelligence of readers...women want more
than just the right shade of red lipstick, they want to read something that makes them
think, evaluate, analyse and that today is what I find missing in the publishing world. We
need to get back on the saddle and think of ways to make the younger generation read.
And read meaningful stuff. And not tell them just ten new ways to wear a summer dress!
A blog is a collection of content that is organized repetitively. This content can take the
form of basic words (copy) as well as rich media (audio, video, and embeddable
objects). A person who owns or manages a blog is called a Blogger. Blogging is
becoming popular these days and it’s a way to publish your writing, share your ideas,
connect with people and learn new things along the way. A blog typically focuses on a
particular subject matter for clarity and focus.
Blogging includes skills like search engine optimization, social media marketing,
writing, editing and publishing posts, designing and maintaining the design of your
website, etc. One should be a good writer to write lot of unique and quality content for
your website.
If one is consistent with their content the future scope is endless. Once domain
authority is established a Blogger can look at avenues like contextual advertising,
direct advertising and text links advertising.
BLOGGER
Sukhneet Wadhwa
I did Economics (hons) & MBA in finance and I left all of that because I just couldn’t bear
going to a corporate job wearing a blazer and pencil skirt every day.I had a sudden interest
in fashion and I could see myself doing this my entire life – being there writing about
fashion and educating people about fashion. And that’s how I started my blog ‘Ms.
CocoQueen’.If one feels they can be in the fashion industry and write about it for the rest of
their lives then this is the place for them. It’s a great way to express yourself.
Producers play an integral role in the television, film and video industries. They
oversee each project from conception to completion and may also be involved in the
marketing and distribution process.
A keen interest in filmmaking and strong financial and business sense is what it takes
to be a successful television, film or video producer. Producers work closely with
directors and other production staff on a shoot. Having directing skills to take charge
of all project operations is a bonus.
As this is a job that requires experience, even first-time producers will have a
significant track record in the industry, perhaps as an assistant producer or in research,
marketing and scriptwriting. Producers are expected to have several years' experience
and a thorough understanding of all programme-making techniques, including
directing and editing skills.
PRODUCER
Ria Gureja
After studying Fashion Media Communication from Pearl Academy. I found that I was
drawn towards offbeat fashion avenues. Media and fashion have been my forte and it was
my learnings at PearlAcademy that has made me an efficient producer at NDTVGoodtimes,
one of India's leading lifestyle channel.
A Content Writer is a creative professional who understands how the major search
engines work and what people are searching for when they visit particular websites.
Their job is to ensure that their clients’ content is relevant enough to create interest for
consumers, plus answer any of their questions and possibly convert them into a
customer.Writers can produce a wide variety of content for the Web, from articles and
reviews to game scripts.
Web Content Writers are expected to create work that is optimized for the Web.
Although many writing techniques are unique to online content writing, a thorough
knowledge of standard writing practices is necessary for Web Content Writers. Due to
the digital nature of the work, Web Content Writers are often required to know basic
design fundamentals and be familiar with digital content management systems. They
are also expected to communicate effectively with clients, meet strict deadlines, and
follow editorial guidelines from different clients.
Most Web Content Writers are self-employed and work as freelancers. They can often
make their own schedules. Or one can opt to work at various e-commerce portals as a
catalogue content writer.
CONTENTWRITER
Sanya Gulati
I always had a passion for writing and so I did Fashion Media Communication from Pearl
Academy. This gave me the perfect opportunity to blend the two fields I was interested in –
fashion and writing. I went on to work at The Hindu and Repindia before working at
abof.com as a catalogue content writer. Being a writer gives me a lot of professional
freedom that a lot of other careers lack.
A Social Media Manager is responsible for communicating to the clients and
customers of the organization via social media channels. Great communication skills
are a must since a lot interaction is required every day.Along with that, creative writing
ability to stir engagement with people online, as well as in person is critical. For
getting the message across to the target audience, the need for good organizational
skills and a deep knowledge of social media tools to have best possible results can
make one stand out of others.
Social Media Manager is one comprehensive job where one needs to have a varied
skill set ranging from strategizing, marketing and even writing blogs for the company.
Digital marketing agencies are the best places to work.
SOCIALMEDIAMANAGER
Jai Randhawa
As a Social Media Strategist,I have had the opportunity to work with many great brands like
Sony and Canon and helped guide their marketing strategies to connect, engage and make
a real difference. I really love the work I do, as it makes one discover more of the world and
in turn you end up discovering more of yourself and that's hard to beat.
India's internet population is growing at an exponential rate propelled by factors like
de-regulation in the telecom sector, increased use of social networking sites, adoption
of e-commerce and daily deals portals trading goods and services in an economical
way, etc. To tap the growing internet audience, marketers are now exploring
opportunities to connect to them through digital mediums like the internet, search
engines, email, social, mobile, video, etc.
A role in Digital Marketing involves marketing of any product (digital or not) using
digital marketing strategies. This includes any marketing campaign that is based
online, such as social networking,YouTube videos and online advertising.
Digital Marketing careers cover the basics of traditional marketing and marketing in a
new internet environment. Due to the rapidly increasing use of internet, many
companies now have a significant digital output or online presence. So, specialised
Digital Marketing positions are on the increase.
DIGITAL

Yes, according to the illustrious roster of design leaders we spoke with here. Design has matured from a largely stylistic endeavour to a field tasked with solving thorny technological and social problems, an evolution that will accelerate as companies enlist designers for increasingly complex opportunities, from self-driving cars to human biology. Over the next five years, design as a profession will continue to evolve into a hybrid industry that is considered as much technical as it is creative.Wait! I can’t guarantee you that in 20 years a computer won’t be the most creative entity on the planet. There are already computers that can paint original works of art. So, in 20 years who knows how far it’s going to go?” The second area is occupations that involve building complex relationships with people: nurses, for example, or a business role that requires you to build close relationships with clients. The design and fashion-led creative business of tomorrow requires bright minds who think different, break rules, challenge, dare and are not afraid to tread alone. Careers in the creative industries are a viable, satisfying and lucrative alternative to the more traditional industries of yesteryears. The following pages are a narrative of some of the choices in the creative industry and about some young professionals who are optimising their potential in the same.
