3. Tidbits from Tommy
As we move through The Story this year, I want to remind all
of us that the book, The Story, is NOT the Bible. The book, The
Story, is a compilation of Scriptures from the New International
Version. As I preach through The Story, I will be using the Bible.
Please continue bringing your Bibles to church. I love the sounds
of the pages turning in your Bibles when we turn to certain texts of Scripture
~ it is such beautiful music to my ears. The Story takes the message of the
Bible and puts it in story form. But we must remember that the this book is
not the Bible. However, I encourage us to read this book; it really helps us to
better comprehend the story of the Bible.
Speaking of More to The Story, someone asked me a question as to the
beginning of the various languages and nations. The answer to this question
is found in Genesis 11. After the flood, the whole earth used the same
language and the same words. The people migrated to a place called, Shinar.
They wanted to keep from being scattered all over the earth;
so, they decided to build a tower that would reach to heaven.
However, this desire, to keep from being scattered all over the
earth, was in direct opposition to the will of God. After the
flood, God commanded Noah and his sons to multiply and
fill the earth ~ Genesis 9:1. When the Lord came down to
look at the tower, He decided to confuse their language so that they may not
understand each other. When the Lord did that, the people spread over the
face of the whole earth. Incidentally, the name of the tower is Babel because
the Lord confused their language. Now we know the rest of that particular
story.
We learn so many things from the Bible, and we learn something new every
time we read it. Even though we are reading through The Story, I want to
encourage us to read through our Bibles.
I know that I have not talked about the subject of parking in our parking
lot on Sunday mornings for a long time. However, this past Sunday during
the Sunday school hour I noticed that the one particular car circled the
building at least three times. Please help us to alleviate the crowded parking
lot at church by parking off campus at the corner of Montavesta and Dove
Run. We have a great shuttle that provides transportation from that parking
lot to the front door of the church and then back following the services.

“How to Lead a Great Bible Study”
We continue in our series of articles from Discipleship
Journal on leading an effective Bible study. This month’s
article is the conclusion of last month’s and focuses on the
use of illustrations and group dynamics. Next month, we’ll focus on
setting goals for your Bible study group. Enjoy!

Illustrations
Small-group settings allow for a variety of teaching
approaches. I use illustrations to clarify and
communicate ideas.
Jesus used illustrations freely. Watching events
around Him supplied Him with an abundance of
material for teaching life principles to His followers.
Mark 12:41-44 records Jesus stationing Himself to watch people
contribute to the treasury. When the poor widow dropped her
two copper coins into the slot, her example became an on-the-spot
illustration for the disciples to learn the spirit behind giving. I strive to
be observant in everyday situations and apply those situations to our
study.
Group Dynamics
I use group dynamics so that the whole group will participate. I
define a group dynamic as any activity that personally involves all
the group members. I’m convinced that the use of group dynamics
increases understanding, retention, involvement, and enjoyment in the
Bible study. A question/answer discussion is a highly structured group
dynamic. Other dynamics include role plays, debates, and skits.

There was an article a few years ago in which a man gave
his idea of a perfect world. He said, “In a perfect world
you would feel as good at 60 as you did at 17. And you
would be as smart at 60 as you thought you were at 17.”
“In a perfect world professional basketball and baseball
and football players would be complaining because schoolteachers
were signing multi-million dollar contracts. In a perfect world potato
chips would have calories, but if eaten with dip, the calories would be
neutralized.” “In a perfect world, mail would always be early, and the
check in the mail would always be for more than you expected it to be.”
The truth is: This is not a perfect world and it never will be! But it
can become a lot better in this New Year for all of us. One thing that
would help us all would be to look more often at the blessings we have
rather than the burdens that confront us. I
remember walking into the pediatric cancer
ward in a hospital when my nephew was so
ill with cancer. I had the overwhelming sense
of blessing, seeing all those ill children while
knowing I had healthy ones at home. My
mother always said (I know I sound like Forrest
Gump here) to look at your blessings because
there is always someone less fortunate. My
resolution has been to look at my blessings
more in this coming year, and my burdens less.
Then, this imperfect world will become much closer to perfect than I
otherwise would think. I hope we all can do this.
Seniors, remember the morning Bible study meets each week on
Wednesday mornings. We’re having a great study over the book of
Ephesians. We would love to have you join us.

6. Don’s Dynamics
Do you love a good story? Are you a good storyteller?
Some of my favorite speakers can draw
me in with a good story. Many times, I
have attended a convention where in the
midst of thousands of people, one could
“hear a pin drop” as the speaker relates a relevant
story to bring home a point. This is especially
effective at the conclusion of a message where we are asked to make a
change or life-changing decision. With that in mind, I am excited to
embark on this wonderful journey over the next several months. After all,
where can we find better stories (and they are all true!) than in the Bible. I
encourage you to read The Story in advance so that you can drink in all that
you can on Sunday mornings and in your small group. As I said in our
worship services on January 5, I hope to support the message of each story
through our congregational singing and special music whenever possible.
As we look ahead to 2014, we will host several concerts and
artists. These concerts will provide a variety of opportunities
for worship and upon occasion, entertainment. Please refer
to our Concert Series Brochure for 2013-2014 for dates
and details. I am looking forward to sharing a Concert of
Spirituals with you on February 23 at 4:00 PM. This concert
will include several vocal solos by H. T. Burleigh, a prolific composer of
spirituals and new arrangements by Mark Hayes. I will also include a few
solos on piano and organ. I have always enjoyed the messages of spirituals.
They often share a Biblical message along with a “hidden” message for the
time period in which they were written.
Do you have the gift of hospitality? On March 23, we will host the
Anderson University Chorale in our morning services. This outstanding
choir was featured on KET during the recent Christmas
season with an hour-long concert along with other music
ensembles from Anderson. We will need hosts for the
evening of March 22. This will include overnight housing,
an evening meal, and breakfast. If you are available to help
in this most important way, please contact me at the church
at your earliest convenience. If you want to check out the choir, go to
YouTube to find some excellent examples of their music.

7. Missions Moment
Weeks Family
We’ve been in our new “home” for about two and a half
months now and these past few months have been full of
adjustments. Life is different here in Ethiopia. For one, if
you saw us walking on our street you would notice us, we
stand out. Another significant difference here is how we
are perceived. In America, if we introduced ourselves to you as seminary
students, dorm parents, or soon-to-be missionaries, you would not have
been overwhelmingly impressed with our status or wealth. In fact, you
might have thought, “Awww, those poor young kids. I’m going to give
Travis $20 to take his sweet wife out to dinner.” (And some of you were
just that kind to us.) Here, our country of origin, our skin color, and our
social network mark us as wealthy people with opportunity…and it is more
true than I once thought. You can see the difference between the poor and
wealthy in America, but in the developing world the chasm between the
two is so great that it can never escape your awareness.
One of the most difficult adjustments for us to make here is realizing and
accepting the wealth and opportunity we inherited by simply being born in
America. It’s frustrating when our white skin makes us a target for beggars,
children, and any opportunist to ask for money. “I’m not made of money,”
I fume in my head. And its true, I’m really not. But… I might as well be.
I have access to more money than most of our Ethiopian friends can even
imagine. Next comes the question that I may never have an answer to:
Why? Why are some people born into the world with wealth, influence
and opportunity (many of whom don’t even realize it) while others are born
in poverty, with many needs and not much opportunity to meet them. It’s
no wonder that when they see me walking down their street they see an
opportunity to ask for something.
My whole life growing up in the church I’ve heard it
preached that everything we have is not really ours, it is
God’s and we are only His stewards. Living in Ethiopia,
Travis and I feel the heavy weight of this responsibility to
be good stewards of God’s resources. You, as partners in
this work, have also chosen to invest your resources and
your lives in what God is doing here. We want to ask you
to come alongside us in prayer as we process and work out
how to be faithful with our resources to God, to our supporters, and to our
neighbors.

12. God’s Love
Is it natural or have we been trained to think of love
in the month of February? It must have something
to do with the institution of Valentine’s Day, but
somehow most of us have come to think of February
as the “month of love”.
As we have begun our journey through The Story,
we have been reminded of God’s great creation. Not
only does this show us His power, but also His love for us. We have
also learned of God’s great promise to Abraham and Abraham’s faithful
response. We have heard of the challenges of Joseph and Moses and how
God used those situations to bring about His will for His people.
All of these situations looked hopeless: Abraham and Sarah were
childless, Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers and falsely accused
by his owner’s wife, Moses was forced to flee Egypt as a murderer. Yet
each of these circumstances worked together to show us how God takes
the events of our lives on earth and incorporates them to accomplish His
ultimate purpose - restoring us to a relationship with Him. As we saw
God’s provision for each of them, His plan for their lives became clear and
we realized that He is trustworthy and is motivated by His great love for
us.
This month let us focus on God’s continued love, provision, and
faithfulness toward us that was revealed in Jesus. The apostle Paul
encouraged the Ephesians towards this when he prayed,
“I pray that you, being rooted and
established in love, may have power,
together with all the saints, to grasp how
wide and long and high and deep is the
love of Christ and to know this love that
surpasses knowledge – that you may be
filled to the measure of all the
fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:17b-19)

Are We Showing Christ’s Love?

I recently attended the funeral of a young lady
from my past ministry in Mason, Ohio. She was
only 19 years old when she went to meet Jesus face
to face. She had fought her battle with cancer for 12
years. Diagnosed with ependymoma, a somewhat
rare tumorous cancer at the age of 7, Jessica Elam chose to make
the absolute best of the time she would have on this earth.
She spent a very extensive amount of time in Cincinnati Children’s
Hospital in those 12 years as she experienced many treatments
through 8 relapses of the cancer. She had a
profound influence on the people that she was
around. Her faith in God was unshakeable and
never questioned. There were dozens of nurses
and doctors at her funeral, on top of the 800ish
family members and friends to say, “good bye for
now”. Her oncologist even spoke at the funeral.
It was obvious by his display of emotions that he
had become very close with Jessica and her family. And from the
words he shared, it was even more obvious the encouragement that
Jessica had been to him in his faith journey.
Jessica worked tirelessly to show the love of Christ to everyone.
She started groups to raise funds for childhood cancer research.
She started a program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital that allows
patients to have visits from their personal pets. She sought to
minister to the people who were going through what she was going
through.
What have you been through that you can help someone else
through? Jessica had plenty of excuses to focus on herself and her
family, yet she chose to show Christ’s love in any way possible to
anyone possible. When I look at her life, I see nothing but Christ.
We are all busy, we all have families, we are all dealing with our
own trials and struggles. But lets take the focus off of ourselves
and take a look around. There are others that need encouragement.
Others that need ministering to. Let’s ask the Lord to help us
see who those people are and help us be selfless enough to do
something about it.

15. What is Your Story?
Student Ministry
Brad Haggard
As we are working through The Story as a church,
the middle school and high school have looked
into how our personal stories are challenged by
the stories in the Bible. Maybe this is the most
important thing that happens to us as we read
scripture. The more we read and open up to God’s Spirit, the
more we begin to see things as God intends.
In the first week of the series, our high school group looked at
the story of Jesus meeting the woman at Jacob’s Well in John 4.
The woman’s negative view of herself was completely changed by
her encounter with Jesus. The woman who shied away from her
village in shame sought out people to tell about the Messiah!
But it wasn’t only the woman whose story changed. The
people in the village, who before had shut her out of society,
now believed her when she told them about Jesus (John 4:39).
The disciples even had to change the way they thought about
ministry when Jesus explained to them that the fields were ready
for the harvest (4:31-38). All of them had their eyes opened to
a new way of looking at the world because of what Jesus did on
that day.
The amazing thing about the stories in the Bible is that they
can challenge us on different levels. At one point we may
identify with the shamed woman, the judgmental townspeople,
or even have our eyes opened to the harvest, like the disciples.
For a few students, the story is
already changing their view and
challenging them to save up to help
build a clean water well for a rural
village in Africa. God’s story is
powerful, and I’m excited to see how
the lives and personal stories of our
students are changed through reading
The Story.

16. People Who Serve Children Make A Difference
Children’s Ministry
Matt Lee
Aly Thompson Is Making A Difference in
children’s lives!
Inspired by her mom’s dedication to teaching her
and her siblings Aly Thompson started serving, in
a variety of ways, in the Elementary Ministry as a high school
student. Now she is a consistent small group Sunday School
leader for the Kindergarten and 1st grade girls. She also recently
joined the ministry team and led the entire worship for one
Sunday with other faithful volunteers and college friends.
As a college student, Aly has chosen to study early childhood
education. She loves kids in general, but
the happiness and innocence of children
make her want to be a better person. It
warms her heart when they tell her she is
loved. She knows that serving children
benefits both the server and the served.
She has learned that each child thinks and
acts differently, some kids talk and some
don’t. Aly loves building a friendship with the girls she serves
through teaching. So what advice does this college student have
for the rest of the church body?
“Always listen to what they have to say. It makes them feel
important and loved and they get a sense of security in you
being their leader. The giggles, the smiles, and the sweet
comments are all reminders that God loves His children so
much. He is working through them, as well as me!”

I came into Critterland on a recent Sunday
with the normal expectations of the day—get
lessons and crafts set up, prepare Jesus in the
Park, and be ready for boundless energy and
mini Houdini-like escape attempts. What I
didn’t prepare for is how much I would be
affected by the day. By the end of the morning I was exhausted,
but I felt so much better, spiritually and mentally. The children
didn’t care that they had been inside. The enthusiasm they
have for learning God’s stories is so amazing,
and to hear them shout out the answers
to our questions with such excitement is
heartwarming. I love knowing what we are
doing is making an impact on their minds, and
that they are “getting it.” If you are feeling a bit
drained by the weather, I encourage you to stop by Critterland.
Sometimes it isn’t just the children who benefit from Sunday
mornings.
Preschool Ministry
Do you get the “winter blues?” Winter is
usually my favorite season. I love snow and cold
temperatures. I love to be snuggled up with family
and big fuzzy blankets. This winter though, I have
been in the house a bit more than usual (young
infants don’t need to be out in the polar vortex!) It has caused me
to be a bit down and tired.

Jennie Peyton has lived in Lexington since
1968. She is a retired hairdresser and now
stays active by playing pickleball. Jennie
has been attending Tates Creek since
June of last year at the invitation of Dale
Kistler. She comes to us from Northeast
Christian where she was baptized in 2003.
Her favorite song is “Jesus Loves Me”
when sung by children, which coincides
with her favorite Bible verse, John 3:16.
June Veatch is known by many and has
been worshiping with us and attending the
Crusaders Sunday School class for over 14
years. Her background is in the Catholic
