Green Day was formed in 1987 under the name Sweet Children by Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool. They released their first album "EP 1,000 Hours" in 1989 after signing with Lookout! Records and changing their name to Green Day. Their 1994 album "Dookie" brought them mainstream success thanks to MTV airing the music video for "Longview". Green Day went on to release several more popular albums in the 1990s and 2000s like "American Idiot", which won them a Grammy and brought renewed success as a "punk rock opera". Today, Green Day remains one of the most popular and influential punk rock bands.

10. breakthrough 1994 "Dookie" is released and thanks to MTV's heavy play of the first single "Longview", Green Day's popularity sky-rockets. Next two years Green Day appear on several magazine covers but most notably Rolling Stone and Spin. They also appear on talk shows like "The Late Show with David Letterman", "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and "Late Night with Conan O'Brian". At the Woodstock reunion festival, Green Day increase their popularity by starting a huge mud fight during their set.

Breakthrough cont. 1995 The bands "Insomniac" album is released and is loved by reviewers but fails to come close to the sales of "Dookie” During a European tour, Green Day packs up and heads home claiming exhaustion. During the next year, Billie Joe writes around 50 songs in preparation for Green Day's next release, "Nimrod”

FALL OUT IN AMERICA CONT. 2000 Green Day released “WARNING”, which was a step further in the style that they had hinted at with “Nimrod” Participated in the warped tour & independent tour to support the album Allmusic gave it 4.5/5 rating saying "Warning may not be an innovative record per se, but it's tremendously satisfying.” Rolling Stone was more critical, giving it 3/5 rating saying observers were coming to the conclusion that the band was losing relevance and there was a decline in popularity 2001 California Music Awards: Green Day won all eight awards that they were nominated for: Outstanding Album (Warning), Outstanding Punk Rock/Ska Album (Warning), Outstanding Group, Outstanding Male Vocalist, Outstanding Bassist, Outstanding Drummer, Outstanding Songwriter and Outstanding Artist

15. American idiot & renewed success 2004 Album “American Idiot” debuted at number one on the Billboard charts, first to top the chart, backed by the success of the first single, "American Idiot." Billed as a "punk rock opera" which follows the journey of the fictitious "Jesus of Suburbia". 2005 American Idiot won the Grammy for "Best Rock Album“ & MTV music awards, they won a total of seven of the eight awards they were nominated for Band toured in support of the album with about 150 dates, the longest tour in its career 2006 Band was awarded with a People’s Choice Award for favorite group.
