Exam feedback Pirates of the Caribbean
How are mise en scene and/or performance used to create meaning for the spectator?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn8jKzJc0wA&feature=related
Mise en scene Mise-en-scène includes setting, props, staging, costume and makeup, figure expression and movement and off-screen space.
Performance • Performance includes physical expression, vocal delivery and interaction between performers (with reference to issues of staging/choreography where relevant).
The significance of the black sea with the title This setting automatically makes the audience feel
Consider the impact of the setting of the sea within the opening credits Focus on the colour of the sea and the connotations of this
In terms of mise en scene we are looking at props What are the props connotations? How does the weather and the apparent abandoning of these props, juxtapose the ideas they represent?
Props- the sheet of music Symbolism?
In this clip, the sheet of music blows away. What could be the symbolism of this?
The way the flowers are being held suggest a bridal bouquet. The spectator immediately questions the reason why the previous clips seem to show abandonment The way that the screen centres the flowers suggest their importance in symbolising events that have or have not taken place. The flowers, linked with the other props, reinforce the idea of celebration, however, the use of weather and indeed colour suggest that something has happened to destroy the celebration
Position of character on the screen is also important. She is not directly facing us though is at the fore front of the screen, forcing the audience to witness her pain Facial expression, body posture and eye contact play a large role in creating meaning for the spectator in this scene. Her facial expression is one of disbelief/shock reinforced by the slackness of her face. Although shadow and lighting fall under cinematography it is important to recognise the use of shadow both on her face and around her. There is a suggestion of falling into dark time.
Contrasting movement between the men coming to the island and her character. It is the lack of movement that she makes which makes it so poignant to the spectator
The affect of the thunder and lightening on her face
