Can assess situations quickly and respond with appropriate
guidance
Understands the strength in teamwork

  • 1. TEACHER AS COACH Presented by: Michelle Walker-Wade
  • 2. What a Teacher Does  Facilitates learning by setting up safe, supportive learning environments.  Promotes academic achievement  Sets up guidelines and avenues for students to obtain the information they need to know  Tends to talk more than listen   The teacher’s goal should be stimulate focused discussion/dialog Assesses student proficiency level and awards accordingly
  • 3. What a Coach Does  Gives information about options  Carefully gives information about barriers  Guides students to the information they need to know  Listens patiently  Asks questions that cannot be answered with a “Yes” or “No”
  • 4. Elements of Successful Coaching 3 major components  1. Personal support 3.  Technical help 2. Technical Help Individual challenge These components are held together by an “emotional bond” between the coach and the coachee Emotional Bond Personal Support Individual Challenge
  • 5. Personal Qualities of a Coach  A coach is someone who          Is qualified by life experience Is objective Is skilled at motivating behavior change Is skilled in questioning strategies Does mind asking the tough questions Cares about the self-esteem AND perspective of the coachee Knows how to give constructive feedback Can assess situations quickly and respond with appropriate guidance Understands the strength in teamwork

The TEACHER as COACH  Sets up requirements of tasks  Uses side-coaching as a tool  Explains, but doesn’t evaluate until the final project is submitted  Entertains possibilities  Provides constant commentary  Enforces students’ use of problem-solving tools at every point in learning  Vacillates between teaching and coaching as necessary
