Tablets have gained unprecedented popularity in last two years. Global
tablet shipments have more than doubled during the last three months
of 2011, rising to 26.8 units, up from 10.7 million a year earlier,
according to research from Strategic Analytics. And while Apple
continues to dominate the tablet category, having sold a record 15.4
million units during the final quarter of 2011, Android OS tablets have
increased their share of the tablet category, growing from 29% in Q4
2010 to 39% in Q4 2011. The change is largely due to launch of Kindle
Fire by Amazon

Kindle Fire shook the entire tablet world when it was announced last
year. Many claimed that it will knock iPad of its throne. We compared
the iPad and Kindle Fire back in December 2011. The question was, if it
will be able to take a big slice of market share from iPad, many said it
will. But as things turn out, things are turning out completely different.
A US research firm, Changewave polled just over 3000 North Americans
in November last year. Out of these folks, 65 per cent said they will
choose the iPad. A further 22 per cent said they would pick the Fire.
Just four per cent said they’d have a Samsung Galaxy Tab and, said
Changewave, “no other manufacturer is garnering more than one per
cent of future tablet demand among consumers”.

As it turns out, Kindle Fire has majorly created a new “third ecosystem”
for itself in tablet space. The numbers of people using tablets have
greatly increased in last two months, majorly due to Kindle Fire, and its
dirt cheap $199 price. Kindle Fire is creating a space for itself, and the
tablet to lose major share in tablet is Samsung Galaxy Tab and not iPad.
It is Samsung which needs to worry, more than Apple.
