Our Story
Our story begins in Canada thousands of years
ago, when our ancestors created the mukluks
and moccasins you see in these pages.

Throughout history, each Aboriginal nation used
distinctive skins and beadwork to reflect their
customs and culture.

Today, as Métis, we create authentic, functional
footwear that connects our traditional handwork
with new materials and production techniques.

Our goal is to partner with
    artists and help them build
    successful businesses.
Our Storyboot project aims to revive the traditional
arts by creating business-building partnerships with
elders and craftspeople who fashion mukluks and
    moccasins the traditional way.

From commissioned handworks within various com-
munities, we produce a limited collection of replicas
called Storyboots. From each Storyboot sold, 50%
of the profit goes directly to the artist.

Our hope is to play a role in helping aboriginal
communities everywhere benefit from the knowledge
of their ancestors and to keep their traditions alive.

Tanning is an intricate process that STONE Vibram: 2017107 Crepe: 2017007
requires time and patience.

Traditionally, our ancestors used flat,
palm-sized stones with beveled edges
as scrapers. They also used bone,
wood and trees in their work, pull-
ing the skins back and forth around
a smooth-bark tree until the hide was
ready for a four-day bath in ash and GATHERER MID
water that would completely remove Sizing: Women’s 5-11, Men’s 6-13
hair from the hide. Foot Lining: Unlined

                                          Outer: Cowhide Suede
After that, a time-tested mixture of
sunlight, brain-tanning and hand-
smoothing would dry and soften the
hide into a perfect piece of leather
fit for use as clothing, pouches or
blankets.

Birchbark Tipi and Canoe Display
Birchbark art dates back thousands of years. Add authenticity
and charm to your Manitobah display with the handmade
birchbark art of Aboriginal artist Margaret Gordon.

  My mother taught me the
skills I use. I proudly continue
  to make traditional crafts
  in her memory today.

Made in Canada
     CONTINUING A TRADITION
At Manitobah, we aim to make the world’s most comfortable,
authentic traditional footwear. To achieve this, we manufacture
our products in Canada, where Aboriginal footwear has been
     made for thousands of years.

Keeping production close to our ancestral home allows us
to remain authentic. And, of course, a “Made-in-Canada” label
means respect for ethical working conditions, fair wage labour
and - ultimately - our people.

And, of course, a “Made-in-Canada” label means respect for ethical working conditions, fair wage labour and - ultimately - our people. 66
