2. José Rizal was a very prolific writer from
a young age. When he was 7 years old, he
wrote a play that was staged during the
town fiesta
At 8 Rizal wrote his renowned poem
entitled "Sa Aking Mga Kabata"
During his time in Ateneo and UST he
wrote numerous poems, plays, and other
literary pieces; he joined contests and
emerged as the winner several times
3. As leader of the reform movement of
Filipino students in Spain, he
contributed essays, allegories, poems, an
d editorials to the Spanish newspaper La
Solidaridad in Barcelona(in this case Rizal
used a pen name, Dimasalang and Laong
Laan).
The core of his writings centers on
liberal and progressive ideas of individual
rights and freedom; specifically, rights for
the Filipino people.

7. Rizal was a leader in the Propaganda
Movement, contributing numerous articles to its
newspaper, La Solidaridad.
Jose Rizal was recognized as the great novelist of
the Propaganda Movement with his books Noli Me
Tangere and El Filibusterismo.
He is considered to be the most outstanding
Propagandist due to the great impact his novels had
done on the development of a Filipino national
consciousness.
Jose Rizal was the Propaganda Movement’s most
brilliant figure and his writings had a wide impact in
the Philippines.
8. "Mi último adiós" (Spanish for "My Last Farewell")
- Filipino (José Gatmaitan): "Hulíng Paalam“
- is a poem written by Philippine national hero Dr José
Rizal on the eve of his execution on 30 December
1896. This poem was one of the last notes he wrote
before his death; another that he had written was
found in his shoe but because the text was
illegible, its contents remains a mystery.
9. Rizal did not ascribe a title to his poem. Mariano
Ponce, his friend and fellow reformist, titled it Mi
Último Pensamiento (My Last Thought) in the copies
he distributed, but this did not catch on.
"On the afternoon of Dec. 29, 1896, a day before his
execution, Dr. Jose Rizal was visited by his
mother, Teodora Alonzo, sisters
Lucia, Josefa, Trinidád, Maria and Narcisa, and two
nephews. When they took their leave, Rizal told
Trinidád in English that there was something in the
small alcohol stove (cocinilla), not alcohol lamp
(lamparilla).
10. The stove was given to Narcisa by the guard when the party
was about to board their carriage in the courtyard. At
home, the Rizal ladies recovered from the stove a folded
paper. On it was written an unsigned, untitled and undated
poem of 14 five-line stanzas. The Rizals reproduced copies of
the poem and sent them to Rizal's friends in the country and
abroad.
In 1897, Mariano Ponce in Hong Kong had the poem printed
with the title "Mi Ultimo Pensamiento." Fr. Mariano
Dacanay, who received a copy of the poem while a prisoner in
Bilibid (jail), published it in the first issue of La Independencia on
Sept. 25, 1898 with the title "Ultimo Adios"."
11. Jose Rizal expresses his willingness to die for his
motherland and bids farewell to his
country, family, friends and love ones. He also asks
them to pray for all those who died and suffered, and
be thankful for he will be in a better place to rest.
