We live in an amazing time. The only barrier to impact is execution. Every individual has the opportunity to take an idea from inception to invaluable and innovative solution in a matter of months. Every nation has the capacity, and the capability, to create a solid foundation for its citizens that has the potential to transform lives and sustain a thriving innovation ecosystem. This talk will examine the part that each of us must play in creating an innovation nation.

- Abstract: We live in an amazing time. The only barrier to impact is execution. Every individual has the opportunity to take an idea from inception to invaluable and innovative solution in a matter of months. Every nation has the capacity, and the capability, to create a solid foundation for its citizens that has the potential to transform lives and sustain a thriving innovation ecosystem. This talk will examine the part that each of us must play in creating an innovation nation. Bio: Dr. Tyrone Grandison is the Founder of the Data-Driven institute, which is a nonprofit that seeks to catalyze and accelerate the process of solving public health problems. Dr Grandison is also a 2018 Zhi-Xing Eisenhower Fellow, was the first-ever Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, served as the Deputy Chief Data Officer (dCDO) at the US Department of Commerce (where he co-founded the Commerce Data Service - a data startup within the Department that supported its twelve bureaus), and was a White House Presidential Innovation Fellow under the Obama Administration. - Meet Jessica Matthews. In 2007, when she was 18, she attended her aunt’s wedding in Nigeria. When the electricity went out, diesel generators were used to keep the lights on. Jessica recognized the health hazards posed from the fumes and decided to do something about it. In 2008 (at the age 19 and while in her third year of college), Jessica invented the SOCCKET ball - an energy generating soccer ball that provides off-grid power. A half-hour of play with the soccer ball generates enough energy to power a small, attachable LED light for three hours, so that play with soccer ball also provides children a reading light with which to do their homework after dark. At the age of 22 (2011), she founded Uncharted Play, a renewable energy company specializing in motion-based, miniaturized power systems. She is now 29 and leads a company that creates renewable kinetic energy solutions to generate clean, consistent, and cost-efficient power for communities. Jessica embodies the innovative spirit.
- To drive innovation, one needs two things: Knowledge & Will. Knowledge: Knowledge of a meaningful problem. Knowledge of people, how they experience the problem, and what the solution should be shaped like. Foundational, Technical Knowledge to execute and bring solutions to life. Knowledge of the landscape that every solution lives in, i.e. Business, Legal, Social. Will: The perseverance to constantly engage with your users and relentlessly believe in and push your idea into the world.
- Simply put, Innovation is the successful conversion of new concepts and knowledge into new products, services, or processes that deliver new customer value in the marketplace. The talks that I saw yesterday were innovative. The University is not an island. It exists in a community with an ocean of problems. This University should set itself up as a hub of innovation.
- We are in a time, and space, where each one of us can acquire the abilities and the resources to have global impact. Each one of us, can use our superpowers to solve a real problem that will help thousands, or millions, of people. Each of us can create innovative solutions. Each one of us has to. Because becoming a nation of innovation starts from the bottom up. If a poor, lower-middle class guy from Duhaney Park in Kingston 10 can be here, then you can be here as well.
- [Summary of Work History] I am going to speak to the process of going from idea to product – from the perspective of a technologist. The one I am going to talk through the process with is CitySDK. CitySDK is an open source, community-based software development kit for civic technologists that seeks to reduce the pain of working with (and integrating) federal (open) data sets and local (open) data sets and to get developers to a deliverable quicker and with less hassle.

- Purshable provides a solution to a multi-billion dollar problem facing the grocery industry: food waste. Purshable is a mobile app that will help reduce waste, increase grocer’s profit, and offer the shopper high quality food at a fraction of the cost. The mobile app will synchronize to the grocer’s inventory, allowing the grocer to put food that is soon to expire on sale, instead of simply throwing that food away a few days later. The app will then automatically notify enrolled shoppers of nearby sales, according to their geo-location and/or shopping list. If the grocer is not interested in discounting products, Purshable will also have a donation option, allowing for easy coordination of donations with nearby food pantries. Purshable is a win-win-win: we help grocers increase profits, we help consumers find the best deals, and we help redirect soon-to-be-wasted food to those who need it most. “Accessible Place Finder” helps people with disabilities to easily find a place to live or travel in the state of Minnesota that satisfies the specific accessibility needs of this population group. The Open Energy Efficiency Meter is an open source application that uses open standards (Green Button) and open data (NOAA) to create a standard weights and measures for energy efficiency that is reliable for homeowners, efficiency service providers, and grid operators. In simple terms, this means that using the meter, private companies, utilities, and regulators will all calculate the same level of savings for a given set of building efficiency projects. HyperLocal created an app to help Food Truck operators without a lottery parking spot find customers by locating people who are tweeting about being hungry in real time.
- The common thread of all these projects, whether CitySDK, a web application built on it or an initiative inspired by it, are these four things.
