Figured I’d go with a name brand train set over the random boxed train sets that are sold anywhere
from grocery stores to hardware stores around the holidays. Glad I did. This Polar Express Train
Set is very nice, and the train itself is a bit bigger than I expected, which is good, too. (I’m not a model
train guy, O and G and S gauges don’t really mean a lot to me.) But, this looks great going around the
Christmas tree, in the canyon between wrapped presents.
But, it’s far from being perfect. First, while the track clicks together easily, if you’re not dealing with a
pretty flat surface, it’s easy to snap back apart, causing the train the derail. Also, the latches to hook
the train cars together aren’t any kind of latches at all – they’re just holding onto each other with the
force that the train is traveling. If you do happen to have a tiny dip anywhere on the train track
surface, there’s a good chance you’ll lose a car or two. Worse yet, the engine car and the “coal” car
(where the batteries go) are the worst offenders, as they don’t really line up vertically. We tied them
together with string, but it wouldn’t have been much effort for the company to do something a bit more
robust on there.
As far as the rest of the set goes – we love the sounds, we love the looks, the size, just about
everything. A couple nice-to-have’s on this set would have been a volume control and a way to turn
off the engine (rather than waiting 10 minutes, all the while listing to the engine, for it to turn itself off.)
Overall, I’d recommend this. Sure, it’s my first train set, and may possibly be my last, but it really adds
a nice touch to the Christmas decorations. And despite it just going in a big oval, round and around,
the kids seem to have fun it with. Watch the price, too…sometimes it’s selling for MSRP, other times
it’s 40-50 bucks less.
