Study options
This program must be taken via
internal delivery and on a full-time
basis only.
The University of South Australia’s Master
of Business Information Systems (BIS) is an
intensive program where students can obtain
a highly sought-after master degree and real
world experience over 12 calendar months.
The program represents a unique convergence
between the IT and Business disciplines and
produces graduates with both technical,
interpersonal communication and management
skills – a highly valued commodity in today’s
competitive business environment.
Catering for the needs of industry, the BIS
program was developed and continues to
develop through close consultation between
the university and the public, private and
not-for-profit sectors. It is a selective program,
with enrolment dependent on a combination of
high academic achievement, a written application
and an interview before a panel comprising an
academic staff member, a program graduate and
an industry partner representative.
A major point of difference of the BIS program is
its concentrated focus on experiential learning.
Students undertake three semester-long industry
placements (two individually, one as part of
a group), centred on applied projects in real
world businesses. Through this, students can
gain a valuable insight into the machinery of IT/
IS management and are able to start making a
constructive contribution sooner, upon entry to
the workplace.
The School of CIS maintains close links with
industry in both its teaching and learning and
research activities, and nowhere is this more
apparent than in the industry partnerships
developed through the BIS program. Some of
our strongest and most enduring collaborative
relationships have begun through the provision
of BIS placements. Participating industry partners
include:

Careers and industry
Another benefit of the BIS program is that
it provides expertise in performing an IT
management role, combined with the
analytical ability to use information effectively
for decision-making. This equips graduates
with the necessary skills and knowledge to
secure a position and to progress into a senior
management role. This claim is supported
by a 100% professional employment rate
experienced by BIS alumni.
Employment opportunities abound for BIS
graduates, in diverse roles, including: systems
analyst, business analyst, information systems
specialist, or in general management. Graduates
may also be recruited into an area where
information systems skills can be applied such as
accounting, marketing or human resources.
Contemporary business relies on the
management of information technology
for increased productivity and profitability and
graduates of the BIS program are ideally placed
to establish successful careers at the forefront of
this interesting and dynamic field..
