Why orchid???We went through different iterations. All started with a hacking workshop where we explored the opportunities, different devices assembled together, have The three most important results of the iterations are presented on this slide.We integrated some LEDs and magnetic sensors into two identical teddybears and programmed them with a MAX borad to let them communicate over distanceThen we went more abstract and developed a plant which had space for multiple representations of usersIn the end we developed this concept further and finalized it in the concept ‚Anemone‘

One of our findings was that context information is very valuable and that we should include it in our final product, because the delivered messages could else remain unclearPutting hands to the mouthTalking/eatingProblem in communcation if interpreted wrongly
After exploring many different means of communiaction through research, role play and creative sessions, we widened our scope from gestures and light to sound. I would add the user test with Ank on an extra slide after this one! We presented an explorative prototype which she could use to have a first impression about our concept. By that time we wanted to have a passive mode that only delivered the sound of the surrounding in the room plus an active one with voice recording. Our participant liked it but did not like the idea of a voice recording function, and would prefer something more abstract.So we tried to implement her ideas
Keeping our findings of the past iterations in mind, we came up with our final concept, which we called ‚Anemone‘. Like the friends one has in the list on facebook, physical representations of multiple users could be attached to the sea plant. So what did we do with it? As you can see, this was in an early stage, we first made some paper prototypes
With them, we tried out the possibilities one has with a variety of ‚paths‘ one can walk with the tentacles through the anemone. This way, we decided on the number of dock-in-stations, so to say, that were needed for the tentacles. We also tried out possible situations, in which the anemone could be applied
In our final prototype, four persons could interact with eachother on a bottom part with 9 holes. We kept the idea of having two different modes; the passive one from the past orchid-iteration which simply creates awareness between the different users, e.g. a grandfather in Delft sees when his granddaughter who studies currently in New York comes back from school because the lights of her yellow tentacle start to glow and to go up and downAnd a new active mode in which we transformed the idea of gestures from the teddybear-iteration to a more abstract level. Moving the tentacles on the bottom part of the device, made them leave a trace and create patterns, from which the users could derive and interpret different meanings
Additionally, we programmed the device in a way that made it connect to Facebook. Owners of the physical device can be added in the normal friends-list. In this way, communication with the elderly counterpart being not at home but online, and not having access to the Anemone-device becomes possible.
Here you can see one of our two final prototypes. On the bottom part, the actively set trace of the red tentacle is shown and the green tentacle is lightning up which means that the ‚green‘ person is around his device, at home making passively some sound.
