9. The Galápagos Islands and historic Quito; two wildly unique places that share the common
experience of incredible evolution. Dating to the first millennium, the Kingdom of Quito later
became a center of the Inca Empire where fortresses were built among bustling markets. Spanish
arrival signaled the end of the empire, ushering in new traditions and new architecture. Considered
the Americas’ most beautiful colonial city—and well-preserved today—Quito was the city that all
others wished to mimic. Different in the extreme, the mostly uninhabited Galápagos had fiery
beginnings. Over time, the volcanic islands each eroded distinctively, making way for endemic flora
and fauna in astounding variety. Today, the Galápagos are the preeminent symbol of evolution, and
are one of the world’s most—if not the most—treasured, biologically-distinct ecosystems.
Unquestionably, the Galápagos Islands and Quito’s historic city center—both UNESCO World
Heritage Sites—are shining stars of Ecuador. Wander Quito’s exceptionally preserved Old Town
built atop pre-Colombian markets and temples, and as a delightful cherry-on-top, overnight in the
elegant Casa Gangotena Hotel, once the residence of several former presidents in the late 1800s.
In the Galápagos Islands, step ashore on eight islands and islets. Arguably the most iconic marine
habitat in the world, this unspoiled archipelago is filled with exquisite creatures—giant tortoises,
red-footed boobies, Darwin’s finches, penguins, Waved Albatross, and rowdy sea lions. Hike,
snorkel, and kayak, discovering the unexpected as Charles Darwin did in 1835.

11. “There is grandeur in this view of life…. from so simple a beginning endless
forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved” observed naturalist and
geologist, Charles Darwin about the Galápagos Islands. During his 1835 voyage aboard the HMS
Beagle, his discoveries far exceeded expectation, changing his view of the world forever. Like Darwin’s,
your explorations in this unrivaled archipelago will reveal the unbelievable and awe-inspiring. But first,
your journey begins on Ecuador’s mainland in the highest capital city in the world–Quito!
Days 9-10
Rugged cliffs contrast with white-sand beaches
on volcanic Isla Genovesa, home to storm
petrels, Darwin’s finches, short-eared owls,
and giant frigatebirds. “Bird Island,” welcomes
you with the unique calls of its endemic
residents who put on a show as they bustle
about nesting, feeding, and raising their young.
Commemorate an unforgettable experience
at the evening’s Farewell Dinner and cap off
the night with a slideshow of your voyage. The
next morning, transfer from Isla Baltra to the
airport for your flight home, or disembark in
Guayaquil for your post-cruise flight to Puru.

plazas, beautifully preserved churches, and
a facinating pre-Columbian museum. Witness
the colorful mastery of local artisans and watch
the city transform into a glittering gem from a
cliff-top restaurant at sunset. Once on board
the yacht La Pinta, follow Darwin’s path taking
your first steps in the Galápagos Islands—your
second UNESCO World Heritage Site. Skiff
to untouched beaches on Isla San Cristóbal
and walk among a colony of rowdy sea lions.
A birders paradise, hike Isla Española counting
the different species you find including the
world’s entire population of Waved Albatross.
