Young adults in New Zealand heavily used Facebook during and after major earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 to connect with others, get information, and find a sense of community. A survey found that 91% accessed Facebook within 24 hours of the quakes, 37% within minutes, and Facebook use increased 9% overall. People used Facebook to connect with others both within and outside of New Zealand, get updates on the earthquakes, like information pages, and participate in volunteer efforts. Many felt Facebook helped alleviate isolation and provided a coping mechanism during a difficult time.
