Another personal related problem is jobs. Most students are working part–time in order to support
themselves and their family which at times will lead to intrusion with school hours, home works,
no time for studying especially to major exams and various school activities which otherwise
leads to failing grade. Peer pressure is also another factor wherein these students are being led to
bad influences such as drinking, drug which causes a major side effect to students (Schwartz,
1995). Schools do this in order to handle their problem. Students from broken homes are also likely
to drop out of school due to the stressful situation that they have to go through and thus affect their
concentration in school. Furthermore, most students who dropped out of school don't like school
to begin with. These students will rebel and do anything against the school rules in order to be
kicked out (Schwartz, 1995). They are likely to fail on their subjects, doesn't get along with other
students, and have disciplinary problems. Oftentimes, disciplinary actions are taken before they are
dropped out. Various programs are being carried out by schools in order to reduce the rates ofdropout
and these programs are centered on maximizing school attendance and achievement and other

Why High School Students Dropout
High School Dropouts Dropout is a broad term used to classify a person who has abandoned their
class or field of study. A great number of the teens that drop out of school are thought of as being in
the same category, but there are countless different reasons why students drop out of high school. Be
it living in low poverty areas and having to quit school to work and help the family out. Struggling
with learning disabilities and being in special education or even rebelliousness and pregnancy.

Teen birth rates were high in the same states with the poverty and special needs issues. With
Louisiana teen birth rate at 47.5 births per 100, ages 15–19(Wright). This means almost 50% of the
children born during this time frame were born to underage mothers entering high school or just
graduating. Typically, when a teen gets pregnant in high school they drop out. This is either due to
having to get a job and support her now new family or even the embarrassment of her situation. In
the south, particularly many teens are made to marry at young ages due to pregnancy and forced to
grow up. This situation is avoidable if parents would push their children to finish their high school
education and recognize how important receiving their diploma is.
I am hopeful as we enter a new time that the dropout rates in these southern states will become
less and less. That we can break the cycle on families having to depend of the government for
different programs to survive, so that we can begin to pour money into the school system to help
the teens with learning disabilities make it through school. I am hopeful that in these new times
teens are not forced to marry and stop pursing their education. I am optimistic one day everyone
will realize how important completing high school is and the rates we see now will soon be

middle school, high school presents more classes, students, and a bigger campus. It brings new
expectations and responsibilities to each of us. High school also offers fresh chances to make

without these characteristics. Other aspects of a student's home life such as level of parental
involvement and support, parent's educational expectations, parent's attitudes about school, and
stability of the family environment can also influence a youth's decision to stay in school. For
example, results from the NCES study found that students whose parents were not actively involved
in the student's school, whose parents infrequently talked to them about school–related matters, or
whose parents held low expectations for their child's future educational achievement were more

Another reason why a lot of students drop out of school is simply because they don't like it. High
school, through its control over many decisions that are made for students, still seems to be
restrictive. Many aspects of a student's life are pre–set and cannot be changed by the student to fit
his needs. For example, a student's time schedule is set every year. Every student must go the same
amount of hours every year. In most cases, school is from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. every day,

My survey contained ten questions developed around the idea of trying to connect high school
drop out rates and incarceration rates. It was administered to ten people on my floor, three males
and seven females. Overall, it is believed that crime is committed because people need to support
themselves and/or their family. A majority chose 65% as the percentage of inmates in prison who are
high school dropouts, when the correct percentage was 80%. In addition, they thought more high
school dropouts were unemployed, when as of 2012 it was only 12% (Frontline). The most

I did not realize how careful you have to be when writing the questions because originally I
thought that if I understand what the question is asking, everyone will understand too. However,
each person has a different perspective which is why there was a range of answers. I had to
watch how I worded each question, if I made them too confusing or led them on to a specific
answer. I had to use different formats because multiple choice is not acceptable for every
question. In addition, for the available answers, I had to make sure they were as simple as
possible in order not confuse the testers. I learned that the survey display is very important to how
the question is interpreted; the multiple choice questions made them feel overwhelmed even
though those are the best way to give a simple survey. For the most part the questions were clear
and the collected responses supported the concept I was interested about. If I could improve how
the survey was given for next time, I would have a larger and more diverse audience. I would also
change the number answers to make them more friendly because those questions tripped people up.
The environment where the survey was administered was not distracting. I used my common room
when it was quiet and my room which allowed for the testers to

One of the biggest faced issue in today's society is young students dropping out of high school.
The dropout age as of right now is sixteen, but many schools, teachers, and government officials
agree that the age should be raised. High school drop outs are less likely to become successful and
more at risk for committing crimes, as the Alliance of Excellent Education states " While data on the
education attainment of inmates is sparse, a 2004 survey of inmates in state and federal correctional
facilities by the US Bureau of Justice Statistics finds that sixty–seven percent of inmates in America's
State prisons, fifty–six percent of federal inmates, and sixty–nine percent of inmates in local jails are
high school dropouts" (The High Cost of High School Dropouts). The legal dropout age should be
raised everywhere across the United States; Even though some kids don't have the same
circumstances as others, they should still be in school until they are a legal adult because it will
help them make more money, get a better job, decrease social problems, lower the chance of
negative adulthood, and provide more opportunities for themselves versus if they have dropped out
at the young age of sixteen.
Dropping out of high school has both long term and short term affects on the teen, on others, and on
society. Student's don't realize the actual cost that dropping out has, especially at the young age of

school life. In that moment all that is soaked in is joy and accomplishment. The moment when after

not have the ambition to stay in school while others just can not afford to pay for it. In a few

This journal addresses statistics on high school dropouts, "High school dropouts earn $9,200 less
per year on average than those who graduate." (pp.1). Also, although high school dropouts have
lowered since 2004, it is still common and high school dropouts are more likely to be unemployed
(pp.1). With these I can state the negative effects of becoming a high school dropout. Interviews
that were made by Bridgeland et al. (2oo6) and most interviewees understood the importance of
getting high school diploma, and also believed that they could have gotten one, but they claim to
have worked harder if they had higher expectations from teachers and parents. (pp.3). This journal
also talks about the dropout process and signs that could indicate that an individual is likely to
dropout. These signs could help my essay when talking about the prevention of dropping out. Lastly,

By the time you reach high school, everyone knows someone who has dropped out. It has become a
common method of escape from whatever stresses school might be bringing upon a student. As time
goes on, more and more students seem to be dropping out of high school or college, with one student
dropping out approximately every 26 seconds. Most of them will not realize the long term effects
until it's too late. Students have begun choosing the easy way out and struggling later in life,
generally making thousands to hundreds of thousands less in their career. Though the dropout rate
has fallen a few percent in the recent years according to ( High School Dropout Rates ), the issue is
still prominent. Why do they do it and how can we prevent it?
The first big reason for dropping out is the simple lack of interest or academic difficulty in school.
They sit in class, doing anything but what they should be, waiting impatiently for the class to end.
Or they are dreading going to the next class. "Nearly 26 percent report boredom as a contributing
cause" ( Why Kids Drop Out ). Many drop out due to the thought of even more school caused by
failing grades. The thought of even more time in a classroom proves to be too much and their
motivation to quit. Others may have other interests that take over any interest in their academics.

Lower wages, increased chance of poverty, increased likelihood of experiencing unemployment,
higher rates of crime, poor health due to stress and or insufficient health care. How can we prevent
this from happening? Reducing the number of students who drop out of high school is an urgent
national policy issue. Despite protections established under Individuals with Disabilities Education
Act (IDEA), as well as numerous drop–out prevention initiatives, many students with disabilities
have higher rates of dropout than non–disabled peers. Approximately 75% of the nation's students
graduate high school in the expected four years graduation track. Some students may fail a grade or
two and take longer. Fewer than 55% of students with disabilities graduate high school with a
standard diploma. Each year about 40% of students with learning disabilities and 65% of students
with emotional disturbances drop out of high school. (Pyle & Wexler, 2012) There has been an
increase to provide students with more integrated co– teaching settings or inclusion. According to the
U.S Department of Education the national percentage of students served under IDEA, ages 6 to 21,
and being educated in the general education environment for at least 80% of the day, has increases
from 43.3% in 1995 to 52.1% in 2004. That number continues to rise as using the 90/80 rule, which

High schools across the country are proud to say that in recent years, the national dropout rate has
decreased to an all time low. Still, hundreds of thousands of students are failing to receive a high
school diploma; thus, altering their careers, income, families, and overall future. As a country, we

are leaving school because of situational inconveniences that are made worse by not graduating.

lower income or unemployment because the workforce of today requires higher education for an

dropouts, 16% are unemployed and 32% live below the poverty line. Dropouts with jobs earn an
average of only $12.75 per hour, with the most common jobs found in the construction, food
services, and landscaping industries" (Messacar and Oreopoulos). To put this into perspective,
the average secondary school teacher gets paid around $27 per hour. Lacking a high school
diploma makes it very difficult to get high paying jobs, thus making it difficult to gain work
experience. Especially in this generation, favorable jobs require much higher education
experience than they did before. Recent data shows that, "median weekly earnings for workers
with a high school diploma equal $678. That works out to $35,256 per year. Americans with a
bachelor's degree earn a weekly average of $1,137. That's higher than the median weekly earnings
for workers at all education levels, $860. Average earnings for workers with bachelor's degrees
work out to $59,124 per year. Workers with a professional degree earn a median weekly salary of
$1,730, the highest weekly earnings of any of the educational categories. That works out to $89,960

Throughout the years it seems as though the graduation rates among high school students have
increased, but there is still a huge underlying problem in the U.S. with high school drop outs. There
have been many half brained reasons for these students dropping out and many people believe the

I personally have had many friends who have purposely not gone to school due to their hesitance
of being in a social arena without the needed things that are common, and in many cases, socially
required. Perhaps the most unnoticed but at the same time most common reason that leads to a
students drop out from school is a lack of parental support. As a child, growing up we are in
constant need of our parent's support and reassurance. In an article from The Huffington Post
