2. Recap
In the previous lessons we learned about the concept’s of domestic and regional
tourism.
We also learned about the Southern African Development Community. A economic
union made up of 15 countries from the south part of the continent with close
proximity.
We learned of SADC Member countries, their location and capital cities on a map.
Today we are going to look at tourism attractions within these SADC Countries.
Angola, Botswana, DRC, Madagascar & Lesotho

Democratic republic of the Congo, Madagascar and Lesotho
Understand the concept of Southern African Development Community
in tourism context
Value the importance of learning about World heritage sites
Be able to effectively plan, arrange and execute a tour to any of the
SADC destinations learned about

Attractions provide the most important reason for leisure tourism to a destination
They are the focus of recreational and sometimes educational activities
Natural attractions
- Mountains, rivers, lakes, beaches, national parks, deserts….anything made by man
Man-Made attractions
- Created for tourism purposes
- other times they are created for a significant reason not related to tourism but to make a
statement

7. Angola
kissama national park
On the westcoast of angola, consist of a coastal savannah with boab trees, grasslands
and mangroves
After the Angolan civil war, a wild life re-introduction reform added zebra’s, girafees,
elephants to the parks sea turtles and extensive wildlife.
8. Botswana
Okavango delta
Is a vast inland river delta in northern Botswana, it is known for it’s sprawling grassy plains,
which flood seasonally become a lush for animal habitants
The moreme game reserve occupies the east and central areas of the region , here dugout
canoes are used to navigate past hippos, elephants and crocodiles.
On dry land wildlife includes lions, leopards, giraffe’s and Rhino.

small town sandwhaved between
zimbabwe, Zambia, and Namibia
boarders.

10. Tsodilo hills
• Are rare and unique place with
atmosphere and mystery
• It s believed to be the site of the first
creation by the khoisan who painted more
than 3500 rock paintings against the
magnificent stone faces of the hills
11. Madagascar
Tsingy de Bemaraha strict nature reserve
- These undisturbed forests, lakes, and mangrove swamps are the habitant
for rare and endangered lemurs and birds
12. Royal hills of Ambohimanga
it is associated with strong feelings of sacred character both in ritual practices
and popular imagination for the past 500 year’s
consist of a royal city and a burial site and an ensemble of sacred places
13. Democratic republic of the Congo
Kahuzi-biega national park was gazetted in 1970 to conserve the
grauer’s gorilla the world’s largest gorilla species
Remains the only place in the world where visitors can see these gorillas in
the wild
The park was named after two spectacular extinct volcanoes which
dominate it’s high altitude sector, mont kahuzi ( 3,300 M ) And Biega
(2,700 m)
It’s a safe destination managed by wildlife conservation society

One of the most diverse protected areas on the planet
Half the biodiversity in sub-Saharan Africa found in vurunga
Also a geological wonder containing two of the world’s active volcanoes.
16. Salonga national park
Home to africa’s largest tropical rainforest reserve situated at the heart of
central basin of Congo river, the park is very isolated and only accessible
by water.
It is the habitant of many endemic endangered species such as the dwarf
chimpanzee, Congo peacock, forest elephant and the African slender
crocodile.
17. Lesotho
o The maluti mountains
- Form the boarder between Lesotho and South Africa
- Are of a mountain range of the highlands of the kingdom of Lesotho, they extend for
about 100 km into the free state.
- -The afri ski resort in the maluti mountains attracts winter sports enthusiasts from
Johannesburg.
18. • Basotho pony trails
Pont trekking holidays on the hardy Basotho ponies are immensely popular and a
fantastic way of exploring.
Includes the riding of horses.
19. Katse dam
One of the most spectacular water features in the country, located on the malimabatso
river.
central to Lesotho’s highlands water project.
The dam is second in size in Africa to Ghana’s lake volta.
Sani pass – the mother of all South African mountain passes
Situated between kwaZulu Natal And Lesotho.
20. Mauritius
Port Louis
- Capital city of Mauritius in the indian ocean
- Known for it’s French champ de mars racing track
- blue penny museum focuses on the islands cplonial and marirtime history along with
it’s culture

A village in Northern Mauritius
it’s sandy beaches include baie public beach
the village has restaurants and lively bars

23. Namibia
Fish river canyon
- Located on the south of Namibia
- Largest canyon in Africa and the second largest in the world
- 180 km long, stretche’s from seheim down to orange river
- Forms a boarder between South Africa and Namibia
25. Namib Desert
Stretche’s inland from the atlantic ocean
covers large swathes of Namibia, parts of Angola and South Africa
26. Kalahari desert
Stretche’s around 360 000 square miles across Botswana, Namibia and
South Africa
Part of the 970 000 square mile Kalahari basin which includes Okavango
river and other wet areas
