 According to a survey by Joosten (2009), students
  reported that they need good (67%) and
  frequent communication (90%) with
  their instructor and good communication
  with their classmates (75%). They also reported
  that they need   to feel connected to
  learn (80%) (http://tinyurl.com/yafu8qz).
I don’t use email
 According to PEW Internet study, “Teens who
  participated in focus groups for this study said that
  they view emailas something you use
  to talk to ‘old people,’ institutions, or to
  send complex instructions to large groups “
  (http://www.pewinternet.org/Reports/2005/Teens-
  and-Technology.aspx?r=1).
I use social media
 95.1% of 18- and 19-year-olds use social
  media, primarily Facebook on a daily basis
  (Salaway, et al., 2009)
 96% of undergraduates reported using Facebook
  (Smith & Caruso, 2010)
 43% of undergraduate use Twitter (Smith &
  Caruso, 2010)
 90% use mobile devices to receive and send text
  messages (Smith, 2010), over 1600 a month
  (Neilson, 2010)
 92% of college-aged students watch YouTube
  (Moore, 2011)

  1. ONLINE COUORSES: POOR COMMUNICATIONAs Metts (2003) reported that “Over half (52%) said the worst part of the online experience was poor communication. And half of those (26% of the total) said the problem was communicating with their instructors” (para 16). STUDENTS NEED GOOD COMMUNICATION According to a survey by Joosten (2009), students reported that they need good (67%) and frequent communication (90%) with their instructor and good communication with their classmates (75%). Connecting with students and building connections amongst students allows us to create learning communities. Community and peer networks increases students motivation to perform and provides them with resources to help do better in class.

D2L only pushes down e-mail, no discussion notifications for posts, no mobile notifications, etc.STUDENTS DON’T CHECK EMAILcPEW Study – don’t check email??As Shannon from Seton Hall Law School stated in ELI Mobile session the first week in March, they view e-mail as old technology or for old people.

STUDENTS USE SOCIAL MEDIA OFTENAccording to Bulik (July 8th, 2009) “Out of the 110 million Americans (or 60% of the online population) who use social networks, the average social networking user logs on to these sites quite a bit. They go to social networking sites 5 days per week and check in 4 times a day for a total of an hour per day. Nine percent of that group stay logged in all day long and are ‘constantly checking what's new’” (para 7).

  11. GOAL: UWM will lead the state in MOOC delivery.The means to do this will be built off of the knowledge of blended and online faculty development and course design, upace model, and flex programming.
  12. Open peer learning forums can be created and delivered at no cost. The data on these constructivism approaches is clear and is important in maintaining quality in a MOOC environment.There also should be mentors (K12 teachers and UWM TAs) assigned to each MOOC to monitor discussions forums. Further, there should be a way to “instantly” chat with a “mentor” to get help with your content related questions.There will also need to be student support mechanisms.
  13. K12 certified teachers and TAs can be hired to serve as content mentors for students. This would include monitor discussion forums and “answering” instant requests for help.The help desk would answer questions with regard to D2L. How does this impact Help Desk procedures with asking for a uwm email? Need to track support specific to these students.Online advising will need to be offered for those interested in enrolling in programs.Online tutoring and online library services may be needed.
