2. WHAT IS GOODWINS THEORY?
Andrew Goodwin found that there are key characteristics
and features that are commonly found in music videos.
These include:
 A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals.
 A relationship between the music and the visuals.
 A demonstration through visuals of genre characteristics.
 The demands of record labels to include close ups of the
artists and anything promotional.
 A frequent reference to notions of looking.
 Intertextual references to other media areas such as film
or TV.

3. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LYRICS AND
VISUALS
 This music video is an example of something that is disjuncture.
Disjuncture is where the visuals of the music video do not relate to
the lyrics of the song. This is usually executed if the video that has
been produced has a good concept and is there for mainly visual
entertainment purposes.
 The song is about some sort of relationship breakup, yet the video is
filmed as if it is some sort of wildlife documentary.
 The is common for an indie band to create a disjuncture music
band, possibly as a way to keep away from the mainstream.

4. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MUSIC AND
VISUALS
 As the song begins a long shot of the band performing is
shown.
 As the music chorus kicks in various close up shots of the
band performing are shown.
 Both narrative and performance shots are cut to the
tempo of the song

5. GENRE CHARACTERISTICS
 Band of Horses would come under the Indie genre. Indie
music is know to try to be different and more creative than
most other genres. The video contains a range of narrative
and performance elements.
 Throughout the video there are a range of performance
scenes of the band which is very common for the genre.
 The narrative of the video is an example of disjuncture
which is typical considering the genre.

6. NOTIONS OF LOOKING
 There are various examples of notions of looking in the
music video. These scenes give the sense to the
audience that they are there and part of the action, this
helps the audience to feel almost connected to the
band.

7. DEMANDS OF RECORD LABEL
 Throughout the video there are various close ups of the
band. This helps identify who the band members are to
the audience.
 The whole band is dressed in clothes that would be
considered to be indie, this helps create a visual image
to the band that audiences can relate or inspire to

8. INTERTEXTUAL REFERENCES
 Toward the beginning of the video there are references
to TV/Film by the use of text overlays on the video
displaying the title and introducing characters of the
music video.
 There is also a clip of narrative the beginning of the video
before the music starts which introduces the music video
as though it was a film.
