2. My front cover exemplifies the chosen social group/audience
(youths from poor backgrounds – black youths being the main
audience) for the music magazine by the way in which the person
within it is dressed - as well as the mise-en-scene. For example, his
clothing is associated with that of the style of rappers, as well as the
listeners of this particular genre of music. He is wearing jewelry,
which is common within the dress code of modern rappers, as well
as a baseball style cap. The colour of his clothing is also significant;
as red showcases aggression, this could present the view of this
social groups’ resentment against society. His facial expression
embodies attitude, and to a certain extent arrogance – which again
is representative of the artists within rap music. The background of
the image is a tattered brick wall, which is located outside a tower
of flats. This connotes the starting point of most rappers, coming
from humble/poorer backgrounds.
3. The contents page displays less colour, therefore
showcasing less emotion compared to the previous front
cover. This image is edited with sepia, the person is wearing
a plain black body warmer and white t-shirt, which creates a
sense of blandness and calm state. This challenges the
dominant ideas about the social group that is my target
audience, as it is usually represented through aggression &
violence. This image like the front cover has a background of
the same brick wall – again highlighting the crumbling
society in which the social group that this magazine is aimed
at live within.
4. The double page spread has a changed scenery compared
to the front cover and contents page. The background within
the image is a flats balcony, and the person in the photo is
posed upon the stairs. This supports the dominant ideas
about this social group, as most connotations with youth
culture is teenagers hanging around flats – usually slouched
upon stairs. Although what separates the person with this
stereotypical social group is the jewelry he is wearing –
which suggests his wealth. But he is also wearing a tracksuit
which signifies he still wants to be associated with this
particular social group/class.
