When a person repeatedly takes a drug with a short half-life at increasing doses and frequent intervals, withdrawal is characterized by both a fairly intense but short-lasting syndrome as well as experiencing the opposite effects of what the drug provided. Withdrawal from such an addictive drug can cause temporary but severe symptoms as well as longer term side effects that are the reverse of the drug's effects.
