BACKGROUND
• In 2012, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and
Numbers (ICANN) opened an application period for new generic
top-level domains (TLDs).
• TLDs are the portion of the URL to the “right of the dot” (.com,
.biz, .us, .net, etc.)
• City of New York, through Department of Information Technology
and Telecommunications applied for its own top-level domain
.nyc.
• Neustar awarded contract to manage .nyc through a competitive
procurement
• Passed ICANN initial evaluation and now in “contracting phase”.

» Phase 1 - Sunrise (45 days) Target date: May 2014
» Businesses, organizations or legal entities that have a registered trademark in the TM Clearinghouse,
physical address in the City. If multiple qualified applications received for same name, an auction will
be held to determine registrant.
» Phase 2 – City Government Affiliated (30 days) Target date: June/July 2014
» Government organizations and departments and affiliations such as schools.nyc, doitt.nyc,
NYPD.nyc, fashionweek.nyc
» Phase 3 - Landrush (60 days) Target date: August 2014
» Any Individual, Business, Organization or Legal Entity with an address in NYC. If multiple
applications received for same string, auction held to determine registrant.
» Phase 4 - General Availability Target date: Oct 2014
» For all prospective registrants who have a physical address in NYC. First come first served process
