Social media can help you “do” journalism
Listen – learn to listen on social media, for story ideas, sources and leads.
Chase – use social media’s massive breadth and depth to find new sources and verify information
Follow – social media opens doors for audiences. It allows you to easily find where your reporting will resonate most. It also allows you to follow the conversation and conduct follow up reporting (a lot of time this leads to a better story than the first)
LISTEN
Look for trends (this means that a lot of people are talking about something, regardless of media coverage)
Twitter.
-Mobile is under “discover.” Gives you trends and top tweets for each.
-Desktop is customizable. Click on each to see all Tweets.
Facebook
-Mobile you have to “search,” can find trends and description of the trend.
-Desktop gives you descriptions, top news articles and verified user posts.
Reddit
-Organized by subreddits, by topic. World news shows you most “upvoted” on the platform.
-Reddit Edit is a cheat – shows you top stories on the most popular subreddits, and you can “go mainstream.”
More advanced:
-Finding and using hashtags effectively. Turkey murder on Monday = found 3 hashtags that told stories
#OzgecanAslan – her name.
#sendeanlat (tell your story too) > led to more stories
#Ozgecanicinsiyahgiy (wear black for Ozgecan) > wearing black
-Building Twitter lists by topic
-Setting up alerts across social platforms
CHASE
Facebook Graph Search. Rolled out in 2013, you can search people with a number of filters. Opened up rolodex to 1.2 billion. “People who live in Tripoli and speak English” > college educated > photos
Facebook Newswire.
-Photos, videos, posts, updates – all verified by Storyful. Each post has description and embeddable content.
Location search: Twitter / Instagram
-Twitter: A number of different ways. 1) Keyword search near a city, 2) Advanced search (twitter.com/search-advanced), 3) by geo coordinates.
-Instagram: Gramfeed.com lets you find photos within an area. Can embed maps.
FOLLOW
Reddit URL search – just type in your URL into search, save it as a favorite.
Twitter URL search – type in your URL into search, filter all tweets about it
CrowdTangle for Facebook – referrals, mentions, top lists. Only for Pages.
-Follow the people who are talking about the subject. It will lead to more stories and more sources
