TOUCHMARK ON WEST PROSPECT
August 2014
Join us for our grand opening!
Guest speaker: John T.
McFadden, MDiv, will present
Person-centered memory
care in a dementia-friendly
community Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 1
pm at Touchmark.
The public is invited to attend
and be among the first to see
The Meadows at Touchmark,
designed specifically for
Memory Care and CBRF-Level
Assisted Living. Please call 920-
832-9100 by July 30 to RSVP.
Enjoy refreshments,
entertainment, tours, a release
of butterflies, and prizes. Each
attendee will receive a copy
of John McFadden’s book,
Aging Together: Dementia,
Friendship, and Flourishing
Communities.
A resident-only event will be
held that morning from 10 to
11:30 am.
The new building includes
46 private rooms with full
bathrooms and two double-
occupancy residences. They
are divided among three
neighborhoods, providing a
warm, comfortable setting in
an open-plan environment that
includes electric fireplaces,
bookcases, carefully selected
artwork, and other touches that
evoke the familiarity of home.
Each neighborhood has its own
kitchen, living room, and areas
for dining, activities, music and
art. A beauty salon/barber shop,
spa baths, and family meeting
room are shared by the three
neighborhoods, and there are
also secure outdoor courtyards.

services draws on the latest research for
providing a comfortable and secure environment
for people experiencing memory loss. Touchmark is
a certified Best FriendsTM
environment, which is an
industry-leading approach developed specifically to
care for people with dementia.
A major renovation also has been completed.
All paint, furnishings, carpeting, and flooring in
common areas are now updated within the existing
community. Crews updated lighting, added new
“transitional” finishes that feature warm earth and
Tuscan colors, and remodeled the dining rooms,
multipurpose room, main reception area, library,
and the bank/store. There is also a café-style bistro.
Berghammer Construction Corporation of Butler,
Wisconsin, worked as the contractor on the one-
story expansion and extensive renovation. Rick
Wessell, senior vice president and director of
construction for Touchmark Development &
Construction, oversaw the expansion. Architects
were LRS Architects and Joseph Billig, AIA, director
and vice president of Touchmark Development and
Construction. Watch for photos in next month’s
newsletter.

Our environment, and how we feel about it, can have a huge impact
on the way we feel. For many, the first areas that come to mind
when we think of environmental wellness are things like reducing
and conserving energy or reusing and recycling practices. These
areas should be important to all of us, and they are areas of focus for
Touchmark communities.
Another area to consider is the impact and benefits that house plants
have on the environment and our wellness. Research at Kansas State
University (2006, Park, Seong-Hyun) on indoor plants identified
several therapeutic benefits, including reduced stress, lower heart
rates and blood pressure, decreased pain medication, and less
fatigue and anxiety. Indoor plants also add color and brighten mood,
moisturize and purify the air, and sharpen focus and attention.
Some Touchmark communities have outdoor gardens, which are
also beneficial for your body and soul. Gardening is considered
a moderate to intense form of exercise and uses all three types
of recommended activities—endurance, flexibility, and strength.
Gardening also provides people with a sense of personal well-being
through stress relief, education, and the creation of friendships.
Indoors and outdoors, plants offer many benefits. Do you have a
green thumb? Would you consider teaching others how to have a
green thumb? Share your thoughts and ideas with your community’s
Life Enrichment/Wellness team. Help us enhance environmental
wellness; consider adding indoor plants to your home environment.
If you are interested in a list of safe plants, send me an email at

Executive Vice President
Joan McLeod, RN, has been named resident care manager of Touchmark, overseeing the new memory care
and CBRF-Level services.
Joan has more than 30 years of nursing experience that includes supporting home therapies for Fresenius
Medical Care in four regions and working in intensive and critical care at Appleton Medical Center. Most
recently, she was a medical professional specialist with Kimberly-Clark Corporation.
“I chose a career in nursing, because I enjoy human interaction and helping people,” says Joan. “I also have
a particular passion for working with older adults, especially those living with an age-related dementia,” she
says, adding that her mother had vascular dementia, and her father has Alzheimer’s disease.
“The Meadows at Touchmark is unique; there is nothing like it in this area. Along with the many design
features of the building that make this an inviting home, we are creating a culture of partnering with those
living at the Meadows,” she says.
Joan is currently working on a degree in health care management and is planning to pursue certification as a
Best Friends™ Master Trainer. She earned an associate degree in Nursing from Fox Valley Technical College.

Longest Day honors those living with dementia
Held on the summer solstice, this event called on participants to raise
funds and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association.
For Joyce Edwards, June 21 couldn’t
arrive fast enough. While most
people recognize June 21 as the first
day of summer, it’s also the longest
day of the year, and it holds special
meaning for family and friends of
people with Alzheimer’s disease or
other age-related dementia.
“The Longest Day is a time when
attention is focused on dementia and
what it’s like for the people living
with it as well as the caregivers who
are there to take care of them,” says
Joyce, whose husband Don had
Alzheimer’s. “Each and every day
seems so long, and so that’s where
the name comes from. But while it’s
difficult, the caregivers are the ones who are really
the lifelines to those living with dementia.”
That’s why Joyce was so excited to see the events
that Touchmark held this year in recognition of The
Longest Day—a day when teams from around the
world come together to honor those facing dementia
with a full day of activities.
As part of the day’s celebration, Touchmark staff
members bowled at Sabre Lanes in Menasha, raising
$505 in donations for the Alzheimer’s Association.
At Touchmark, several activities were held, including
exercise classes, dancing to a musician, and lawn
games. Appetizers and beverages were also enjoyed.
“It was all very positive and very inspiring,” Joyce
says. “It was great to celebrate people’s lives and
honor their strength and endurance.”
This is the first year Touchmark participated in
Longest Day activities, and Rachel Watkins-Petersen,
Life Enrichment/Wellness director, looks forward
to adding more events in the future as a way to
celebrate and honor those living with Alzheimer’s
disease and dementia.

Touchmark on West Prospect - August 2014 Newsletter

  • 1. THE{FULL}LIFE TOUCHMARK ON WEST PROSPECT August 2014 Join us for our grand opening! Guest speaker: John T. McFadden, MDiv, will present Person-centered memory care in a dementia-friendly community Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 1 pm at Touchmark. The public is invited to attend and be among the first to see The Meadows at Touchmark, designed specifically for Memory Care and CBRF-Level Assisted Living. Please call 920- 832-9100 by July 30 to RSVP. Enjoy refreshments, entertainment, tours, a release of butterflies, and prizes. Each attendee will receive a copy of John McFadden’s book, Aging Together: Dementia, Friendship, and Flourishing Communities. A resident-only event will be held that morning from 10 to 11:30 am. The new building includes 46 private rooms with full bathrooms and two double- occupancy residences. They are divided among three neighborhoods, providing a warm, comfortable setting in an open-plan environment that includes electric fireplaces, bookcases, carefully selected artwork, and other touches that evoke the familiarity of home. Each neighborhood has its own kitchen, living room, and areas for dining, activities, music and art. A beauty salon/barber shop, spa baths, and family meeting room are shared by the three neighborhoods, and there are also secure outdoor courtyards. The design for memory care (cont.) Good conversations ... and more! Members of the Spanish class celebrated and practiced their conversational Spanish at El Azteca. Residents had a lot of fun talking with the servers … the margaritas were great, too!
  • 2. services draws on the latest research for providing a comfortable and secure environment for people experiencing memory loss. Touchmark is a certified Best FriendsTM environment, which is an industry-leading approach developed specifically to care for people with dementia. A major renovation also has been completed. All paint, furnishings, carpeting, and flooring in common areas are now updated within the existing community. Crews updated lighting, added new “transitional” finishes that feature warm earth and Tuscan colors, and remodeled the dining rooms, multipurpose room, main reception area, library, and the bank/store. There is also a café-style bistro. Berghammer Construction Corporation of Butler, Wisconsin, worked as the contractor on the one- story expansion and extensive renovation. Rick Wessell, senior vice president and director of construction for Touchmark Development & Construction, oversaw the expansion. Architects were LRS Architects and Joseph Billig, AIA, director and vice president of Touchmark Development and Construction. Watch for photos in next month’s newsletter. (cont.) Our environment, and how we feel about it, can have a huge impact on the way we feel. For many, the first areas that come to mind when we think of environmental wellness are things like reducing and conserving energy or reusing and recycling practices. These areas should be important to all of us, and they are areas of focus for Touchmark communities. Another area to consider is the impact and benefits that house plants have on the environment and our wellness. Research at Kansas State University (2006, Park, Seong-Hyun) on indoor plants identified several therapeutic benefits, including reduced stress, lower heart rates and blood pressure, decreased pain medication, and less fatigue and anxiety. Indoor plants also add color and brighten mood, moisturize and purify the air, and sharpen focus and attention. Some Touchmark communities have outdoor gardens, which are also beneficial for your body and soul. Gardening is considered a moderate to intense form of exercise and uses all three types of recommended activities—endurance, flexibility, and strength. Gardening also provides people with a sense of personal well-being through stress relief, education, and the creation of friendships. Indoors and outdoors, plants offer many benefits. Do you have a green thumb? Would you consider teaching others how to have a green thumb? Share your thoughts and ideas with your community’s Life Enrichment/Wellness team. Help us enhance environmental wellness; consider adding indoor plants to your home environment. If you are interested in a list of safe plants, send me an email at FullLife@Touchmark.com. • 3. Joan McLeod, RN, has been named resident care manager of Touchmark, overseeing the new memory care and CBRF-Level services. Joan has more than 30 years of nursing experience that includes supporting home therapies for Fresenius Medical Care in four regions and working in intensive and critical care at Appleton Medical Center. Most recently, she was a medical professional specialist with Kimberly-Clark Corporation. “I chose a career in nursing, because I enjoy human interaction and helping people,” says Joan. “I also have a particular passion for working with older adults, especially those living with an age-related dementia,” she says, adding that her mother had vascular dementia, and her father has Alzheimer’s disease. “The Meadows at Touchmark is unique; there is nothing like it in this area. Along with the many design features of the building that make this an inviting home, we are creating a culture of partnering with those living at the Meadows,” she says. Joan is currently working on a degree in health care management and is planning to pursue certification as a Best Friends™ Master Trainer. She earned an associate degree in Nursing from Fox Valley Technical College. Touchmark hires resident care manager Longest Day honors those living with dementia Held on the summer solstice, this event called on participants to raise funds and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association. For Joyce Edwards, June 21 couldn’t arrive fast enough. While most people recognize June 21 as the first day of summer, it’s also the longest day of the year, and it holds special meaning for family and friends of people with Alzheimer’s disease or other age-related dementia. “The Longest Day is a time when attention is focused on dementia and what it’s like for the people living with it as well as the caregivers who are there to take care of them,” says Joyce, whose husband Don had Alzheimer’s. “Each and every day seems so long, and so that’s where the name comes from. But while it’s difficult, the caregivers are the ones who are really the lifelines to those living with dementia.” That’s why Joyce was so excited to see the events that Touchmark held this year in recognition of The Longest Day—a day when teams from around the world come together to honor those facing dementia with a full day of activities. As part of the day’s celebration, Touchmark staff members bowled at Sabre Lanes in Menasha, raising $505 in donations for the Alzheimer’s Association. At Touchmark, several activities were held, including exercise classes, dancing to a musician, and lawn games. Appetizers and beverages were also enjoyed. “It was all very positive and very inspiring,” Joyce says. “It was great to celebrate people’s lives and honor their strength and endurance.” This is the first year Touchmark participated in Longest Day activities, and Rachel Watkins-Petersen, Life Enrichment/Wellness director, looks forward to adding more events in the future as a way to celebrate and honor those living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
