56. For Insecta Fantasia, artist Jennifer Angus creates installations composed of thousands of preserved insects pinned directly to the gallery walls in repeating patterns that reference both textiles and wallpaper. Her work is influenced by the Victorian era and evokes the Victorian aesthetic of taste, clutter and exotica during a period when travel, exploration and scientific study were immensely popular. Jennifer Angus'Insecta Fantasia at the Ballantine House which is the museums restored 19th century Victorian mansion. The exhibit is stunning and one can't stop thinking about it.
57. Insecta Fantasia is an art installation at the Newark Museum in New Jersey, which includes the restored historic Ballentine House. It is fitting location for artist Jennifer Angus to show her work. Nestled within the Ballentine House, Angus has taken two rooms, the former rooms of the two Ballentine children, and covered them in insects. From a distance it looks like wallpaper, but upon closer inspection, the walls have been covered in thousands of precisely pinned bugs. Giant pink grasshoppers, perfect replicas of leaves and iridescent jewel beetles all swarm the walls in orderly geometric patterns.
58. The artist arranged some 5,000 preserved insects which are pinned to the wall in kaleidoscopic patterns all over the wallpaper of two rooms in the victorian home. The insects patterns evoke textiles from the period. She also creates a fictious narrative involving two children of the home as amateur entomologists. The artist uses the insects as characters to play out fairy tales under glass with beeswax settings such as Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, The Princess and the Pea... Insects are under cloches arranged with vintage spools of thread, under convex glass frames against the wall. And, also in a dollhouse on the floor. There are many varieties of insects and the colors are rich and gorgeous.
