What was the area like pre- tourism How did the resort respond to mass tourism? What were the advantages of tourism to Torremolinos? Where did most tourists originate from? Why? What were the ‘pull factors’ What were the disadvantages of tourism to Torremolinos ? Environmental Economic Social Environmental Economic Social
Mass tourism advantages Young likely to stay in area Improves domestic economy Income from tourism can be invested in community projects Income from tourism may pay for management, conservation and repairs Great earner of foreign exchange New infrastructure put in place – airports, hotels, roads, electricity and water supplies Telecommunications which locals can benefit from Greater awareness of the need for conservation of landscape and wildlife. Preservation of ancient monuments Jobs in the tourist industry Construction jobs (temporary) Leisure facilities Environmental Economic Social
Mass tourism disadvantages Lower and middle income customers are the target market – does not appeal to higher income earners Issues at specific locations: Footpath erosion Damage to coral reefs Low paid jobs. Higher level jobs are often from the company involved in developing the resort and are not locals Traffic congestion Pollution problems – litter Untreated waste going into rivers and sea Industry dominated by large travel companies who sell package holidays by brochure or internet Behaviour can offend locals Destruction of environments and loss of habitats in order to build hotels, roads etc Many jobs in tourism are seasonal, poorly paid, low status and unskilled. Variable visitor numbers and areas popularity may decrease. Loss of rural peace and quiet Environmental Economic Social
Mass tourism disadvantages Local people may not be able to afford the new facilities put in place for tourists Tourists may prefer familiar food which has to be imported rather than local produce Mass tourist resorts are often in countries at lesser stages of development. Profits go outside the host country. Local food production decreases at a time it needs to be increasing to meet tourist demands Farmers may sell their land to developers or development makes farming land almost impossible Environmental Economic Social
