All the way to The Stained Pelt, Zaileys eyes darted around. There were so many things to see,
but unlike at home, they would stay where she saw them. It was hard for her to grasp the idea of
a stationary city. "Dad," she started in an attempt to get his attention, "Will everything really be
in the same place when we come back here?" His answer was just a chuckle and a nod. He knew it

In the poem Beowulf, the author shifts from Beowulf being an orphan to being a king, by
incorporating underlying themes such as strength and skill, identity, and shift in power to
demonstrate the importance of social structure and the adherence to the comitatus code between
noblemen and thanes. The most important literary element that the poet utilizes is strength and skill
for the reason that the better you are in combat the more respected you are and the greater your
rewards. One of the first examples of the comitatus code in Beowulf occurs when Beowulf responds
to King Hrothgar's call for help. King Hrothgar would like peace restored to his kingdom, but thus

According to the comitatus code, a thane's worth is proven by their strength and skill.
As a result of Beowulf's success, the author uses the theme of identity to build on the importance
of social structure and the important bond of the comitatus code. Beowulf was famous for his
exploits and was seen as one of the best in the land. Threatening Beowulf's reputation, Unferth
says he is too boastful and has a "worse fate" coming for him (10). Beowulf, defending his image,
says that Unferth is "drunken as thou art with beer" and tells his version of the story (10). Unferth
probably tried to demean Beowulf because he was jealous and felt that his own reputation as a
warrior was at stake thus illustrating how important image is to the characters and how they want to
be the best of their class. It is clear that strength and skill, and identity feed off of each other given
that victory in battle increases the worth of one's reputation. Beowulf wages war against three
monsters during this poem. After his first victory against Grendel, he proved his character while
gaining popularity, respect, and treasure. The praise of King Hrothgar represents the bond of the
comitatus code when he states, "Now Beowulf, best of men, I will love you in my heart like a son;

Beowulf Response The story of Beowulf is not just another story. It is a great and action packed
thriller. Beowulf is a fearless leader of the Geats. He has gained immense respect from not only his
homeland but from people around the world. Beowulf has his stories of his success and greatness
told to people all around. He is an all out celebrity of the time. Everybody knows his name. His most
well known stories are his battle with Grendel, The battle against Grendel's mother, and the Battle
against the dragon. When Beowulf heard of the hardships that the Danes were going through he
decided to take action. He had heard all the terrible tales of the attacks. Hearing them just inspired
him more. Beowulf brought his men with him on an excursion to Denmark. Beowulf was greeted in

There was a dragon harassing the people of his land. Remembering his battles and
accomplishments of the past he set out to destroy the dragon. He goes into battle alone, feeling
confident in his abilities. With sword and shield in hand he felt protected. He attacked the dragon,
trying to kill it with his sword, but could not phase it. His sword disintegrated on impact with the
dragon's body. The dragon attacked Beowulf with fire. At first his shield was withstanding the heat,
but not long after it started to melt. The kings warriors saw what was happening and fled. All
except one warrior. Wiglaf saw that his king was under siege and needed help. He charged the
dragon with determination to save his lord. Between the two men they conquered the dragon but at a
costly measure. During battle Beowulf was fatally wounded. While on his death bed he asked Wiglaf

Grendel
Deep within the earth, in the frigid darkness laid the mighty beast Grendel. His tall, grisly frame
trembled as the melodious hymns floated down to his lair. The joyful music sounded like liquid gold
and it stung Grendel's ears. He howled a mournful, drawn–out growl in pain. After several days of the
Earthwalkers' continuous celebration, Grendel was becoming steadily impatient, thirsting for
retribution. How he longed to taste the bitter, metallic blood that coursed through their veins, and

askew on his sandy–colored hair. A silvery trail of drool slid from his lips and out onto the cold
stone floor as he snored quietly. He had obviously never experienced battle, for his armor was
made only of thin leather and had not even a fleck of dirt on it. Grendel's black lips curled
upwards as he gazed down upon his unknowing victim. The power of the demon could crush his
skull in a second, splattering the boy's hopes and dreams all across the stone floor. No, that would be
too abrupt – and it wouldn't be the warrior's death that this boy obviously so eagerly desired. No,
Grendel would enjoy this. So with one slash of his razor–sharp talons, the boys throat was cut. Long
ribbons of scarlet ran down his almost severed head and down onto the floor. The instant his neck
was cut, his eyes shot wide open in horror, staring for only a moment at his murderer. The fear, now
etched eternally in his face, was like that of watching your worst nightmare transpire right in front of
your eyes. That moment was everything Grendel wanted from his journey into mayhem. That single
