Bill McBride
Bill McBride is a former middle and high school teacher and Reading Specialist. He holds a Masters in Reading
and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Bill is an inde-
pendent consultant and the Author-in-Residence for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and has contributed to the
development of a number of their textbooks. He is most well known for his heartwarming novel Entertaining an
Elephant. In its18th printing and used by school districts across the nation, the book tells the moving story of a
burned-out teacher who becomes re-inspired with both his profession and his life. The sequel to this book, en-
titled Carrying a Load of Feathers, came out in 2009. Bill’s latest book, What’s Happening? is a Response to
Intervention program for Tier 2 students. Bill presently trains teachers in student engagement, gender brain
differences, using technology in the classroom, vocabulary development, and content area reading method-
ologies.
Keynote August 3, 2011
Turning Word Losers into Word Lovers
Students who are reading content area texts are immersed in difficult concepts, foreign terms, scientific and
process oriented words, and concepts about which students have little prior knowledge. This highly entertain-
ing keynote describes why English is a difficult language to learn, what doesn’t work in teaching words with
older students, and what it means to “know” a word. Using humorous examples, teachers will discover class-
room practices that help students increase the joy of learning words.

Tammy Worcester is a highly sought after speaker, published author and dedicated educator. She brings a
unique perspective, loads of enthusiasm, a wide scope of knowledge on technology tools and effective inte-
gration. Tammy Worcester was a featured presenter at the 2010 Educator Conference and received glowing
reviews from all who attended her sessions. Mini-workshops will be offered on both days facilitated by Tammy
Worcester. These sessions will provide a more in depth exposure to specific technology topics.
