This document defines and discusses distance education. It provides three definitions: 1) Education that takes place when the instructor and student are separated by space and/or time; 2) Formal learning in which the student and the instructor are not in the same place at the same time; 3) Distance education allows learners to learn when they and their instructors are not in the same place and same time. It also notes that distance education uses different materials now, such as videoconferencing, compared to the past when it used print materials and letters.
