Momentum: A little over a year and a half after the release of Silverlight 1, Microsoft has innovated rapidly, providing a choice of industry leading video and audio codecs, adding support for the largest number of static and dynamic programming languages, and taking advantage of the power of the GPU, all while striving to make Silverlight the most secure platform for building RIAs in the industry. We've worked incredibly hard, and our team has successfully been able to bring the highest level of innovation to the platform over the shortest amount of time. We’ve also continued to see a tremendous amount of interest from online broadcasters and RIA developers, who are creating new and compelling applications that continue to drive adoption the number of developers and customers taking advantage of the benefits of Silverlight continues to grow at a rapid pace and shows no signs of slowing. In addition to more than 400,000 developers are currently using Silverlight, leading companies and government organizations such as Accenture, CBS, CTV, eBay, European Commission, Kelley Blue Book, LinkedIn, Netflix, New York Magazine, Samsung Electronics, the State of California, Turner Sports and Yell .com are building their next-generation rich applications and media experiences using Silverlight. Many new partners have also joined the Silverlight Partner Initiative (SPI) since the launch of Silverlight 2, including leading CDNs, solution providers, and encoding ISVs, bringing the total to approximately 200 partners in over 30 countries who are helping customers around the world develop, design and deliver compelling Silverlight experiences. At Microsoft, more than 200 products and Web sites are now using Silverlight, including Windows Live, Office and Office Live, and MSN . Insert new customer win profiles Virtual Earth for Silverlight beta: Silverlight is changing the way we view the web, and Virtual Earth is changing the way we visualize data. At MIX, Microsoft is bringing the two ideas together to change the way we view data on the web. Today, Microsoft is making a Virtual Earth for Silverlight beta, that enables the rendering of massive amounts of geospatial data to ensure users have a great experience while mining expansive amounts of data.“Eclipse4SL support for Macintosh:We are also enabling new support for Mac developers to target Silverlight using Eclipse. Microsoft funded a project by Soyatec, a France-based IT solutions provider and Eclipse Foundation member, to develop an open sourceplugin called Eclipse4SL which enables advanced Silverlight development capabilities in the Eclipse IDE. Soyatec has now released a Customer Technology Preview (CTP) of Eclipse4SL support for Macintosh. With this, Mac developers using Eclipse can develop Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) using the Silverlight platform. This announcement is a delivery on commitments outlined in the October 2008 Silverlight 2 launch press release, which included – as part of Microsoft’s continued commitment to openness and interoperability – plans to support “additional tools for developing Silverlight applications by providing funding to Soyatec, a France-based IT solutions provider and Eclipse Foundation member, to lead a project to integrate advanced Silverlight development capabilities into the Eclipse IDE.” Soyatec will post the CTP of the project on March 18 at http://eclipse4sl.org under Eclipse Public License Version 1.0, where anyone can submit bugs and feedback or contribute to the project. The complete version of the tools is expected to be available free from the download site by spring 2009.”Silverlight has made tremendous progress since it was first launched a year and a half ago. Today, over 400,000 developers are currently using Silverlight. Leading companies and government organizations such as Accenture, CBS, CTV, eBay, European Commission, Kelley Blue Book, LinkedIn, Netflix, New York Magazine, Samsung Electronics, the State of California, Turner Sports and Yell .com are building their next-generation rich applications and media experiences using Silverlight.“We chose Silverlight because we recognized that it enabled us a faster and more agile development environment, enabling us to quickly deliver superior experiences to our customers,” said Steve Swasey, vice president of corporate communications. “In addition, we experienced real cost savings with our Silverlight solution, which allows us to focus resources on new innovations in online movie viewing to our customers.” Many new partners have also joined the Silverlight Partner Initiative (SPI) since the launch of Silverlight 2, including leading CDNs, solution providers, and encoding ISVs, bringing the total to approximately 200 partners in over 30 countries who are helping customers around the world develop, design and deliver compelling Silverlight experiences. At Microsoft, more than 200 products and Web sites are now using Silverlight, including Windows Live, Office and Office Live, and MSN .
