At university, you will be required to reference
almost every source that you use. While referencing
can be tedious, it is an important skill to practise so you
can achieve great results by meeting the referencing criteria
of your assignment.
The following tips will help you master the art of referencing
books, journal articles and websites using the APA style.

Step 1: Collect
Firstly, collect all of the information you need to complete
your references. It is easier to do this as you research to avoid
leaving it until the last minute, which can mean you miss
important details.

Step 2: Order and format
The next step is to order your information. Remember
to double check that you have included punctuation in
the correct places and spelled everything right, as well
as whether you formatted your references using capital
letters, italics and indentation in the
appropriate places. Practise makes perfect!
Books (online and print)
Author, A. A. (year). Title of work. DOI.
For print books, you’ll also need to collect
information on the publisher and place of
publication
A DOI is a Digital Object Identifier. It is a unique name that provides
a link to its location on the Internet. You need to collect and use the
DOI for online books only.
Journal articles (online and print)
Author, A. A., Author, B. B., & Author, C. C.
(year). Article title. Journal Title, volume number
(issue number), page numbers. DOI.
Websites
Author, A. A. (year). Title of work. Retrieved
month day, year, from source URL.
However, there are many exceptions to
these rules.
For example:

authors or no author
»» if you accessed a book of limited circulation
»» if you’re using an encyclopaedia
»» if you’re using a review, peer commentary
or abstract
and many more.
