2013 ANNUAL HIGHLIGHTS REPORT
Transforming the Voice of Central Texas Tech
DEAR ATC MEMBERS, COMMUNITY
MEMBERS & FRIENDS,
Transformation was a key theme for ATC in 2013 and the initiatives
selected for this annual Highlights Report reflect that focus.

Regional Roadmap

The ATC Board, our members, and community stakeholders
completed a comprehensive strategic planning process to guide
ATC’s support of Central Texas tech and ATC’s evolving role.

Economic Impact Study

We introduced the 2013 Economic Study which transformed
community perception of tech’s impact on the region.

Workforce Development

Work continued on the ATC Foundation, transforming the way our
community approaches STEM and related talent challenges.

Life Sciences Development

In anticipation of coming growth, ATC accelerated our work to
strengthen and integrate the life sciences sector.

“A strategic
community
commitment
to sustain and
enhance the
benefits tech
delivers to the
region is an
absolute necessity.”

Record Numbers

It was a groundbreaking year for our market and, as the gateway to
Central Texas tech, our numbers reflect that.

Stakeholder Education

To meet increased public and private sector interest in entering
or seeking alignment with Austin tech, ATC initiated stakeholder
education on the diversity and strengths of Central Texas tech.

Leadership Development

ATC strengthened member and leadership rosters to reflect the
diverse needs and shared priorities of Central Texas tech and life
science companies.

In 2014, ATC will build on these and other initiatives, further
integrating the tech community and strengthening our region’s
growing reputation as a new model of tech opportunity, engagement,
and success.
Thanks to all of you who were part of our growing community in 2013!
And special thanks to the ATC Board under the leadership of Chair Joel
Trammell. The impact of their commitment last year will be apparent
for many years to come.

REGIONAL ROADMAP
Over the last year, the ATC Board, our members, and community stakeholders undertook a comprehensive
strategic planning process. This provided an extraordinary compass for the direction of Central Texas tech
and ATC’s evolving role. As a result, the first coordinated steps toward addressing regional talent, capital,
integration, and economic development priorities are mapped and underway.

Tech Talent

Develop blueprint and community to address Austin
technology talent and workforce challenges

Capital

Develop blueprint and community to improve the capital climate

Market Development

Through data collection, analysis, and education, accelerate
the tech ecosystem

Life Sciences

Integrate and strengthen the life sciences sector

Tech Brand

Develop and support Austin’s brand as a leading tech
ecosystem and model innovation community

Tech Integration

Tech integration, community inclusion, and diversity in tech

3
ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDY
Introduced at the CEO Summit in May, ATC’s 2013 Economic Impact Study transformed community perception of tech’s impact on the region. The report revealed that a full 20% of the GRP ($21B) and 1 in 5 regional
jobs derive from tech activity. These statistics, compounded by increased global competition for resources,
make a strategic community commitment to sustain and enhance the benefits tech delivers an absolute
necessity.

“Tech’s involvement in building a strong community, not just a
strong economy, is critical to any sustainable regional future.
The investment we make today in meeting the immediate and
future needs of our community will make the difference in
Austin’s long-term health as an innovation-based economy.”

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
The ATC Foundation continued to transform the way our community approaches STEM and related talent
challenges. 2014 will provide a new perspective and commitment to improving regional awareness of tech’s
number one challenge.

Gene Austin, CEO, Bazaarvoice, Daniel Pianko, Managing Director, University Ventures and Susanne Bowen, ATC Foundation
Chair propose new solutions to the region’s tech talent challenges at the ATC CEO Summit.

“Hiring and retaining talent
continues to be the number
one priority for tech and life
sciences. The ATC Foundation
is serving an important need
to encourage STEM education
and careers for Central Texas
students.”

LIFE SCIENCES DEVELOPMENT
Since the life sciences community found a home with ATC 4 years ago, the sector has become an integral
part of the Central Texas tech story. Through the work of the Life Sciences Advisory Council, we are working
to identify and solve challenges facing these companies, developing shared objectives with the greater
tech community, and ensuring life sciences interest and expertise are included in relevant Central Texas
development discussions.

ATC President and CEO Julie Huls leading a CEO Series event, which serves life sciences and tech leaders.

“With the medical school clearly on track to happen, the life
sciences sector has large potential for growth and a continued
positive impact on our community. Our priorities, which are
quite similar to those identified by traditional technology
companies, need to be heard and incorporated into future
plans. ATC provides that avenue as well as a gateway we need
to the broader business community.”

STAKEHOLDER DEVELOPMENT
The public and private sector interest in entering or seeking
alignment with Austin tech has never been greater. Articulating
the diversity and strengths of the Central Texas tech sector to
stakeholder interests was a priority in 2013. In 2014, we’ll continue
to leverage that interest toward ATC’s strategic priorities.
ATC is the preferred gateway to Central Texas tech.

“Upcoming public policy
initiatives and legislative action
will be critical to our future
success. The ATC Stakeholder
Advisory Council intends to
advance the interests of the
regional tech community
among elected officials
and other stakeholders in
Washington D.C. and Texas to
implement meaningful policy
solutions which will benefit the
entire technology industry.”

  • 4. ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDY Introduced at the CEO Summit in May, ATC’s 2013 Economic Impact Study transformed community perception of tech’s impact on the region. The report revealed that a full 20% of the GRP ($21B) and 1 in 5 regional jobs derive from tech activity. These statistics, compounded by increased global competition for resources, make a strategic community commitment to sustain and enhance the benefits tech delivers an absolute necessity. “Tech’s involvement in building a strong community, not just a strong economy, is critical to any sustainable regional future. The investment we make today in meeting the immediate and future needs of our community will make the difference in Austin’s long-term health as an innovation-based economy.” 4 Tom Meredith Co-Founder & Chairman Meritage Capital LLC
