- 3. How Do You Market Your Blog? Why Social Networking Matters

- Let’s go right to the board… Pretty audacious claim, right? How many of you were at the social networking session just prior to this one? Business Butterflies? For those that have been to that session, I’ve spoken with Ryan and we’ve discussed what things may overlap…. How many of your feel like social networking is or is going to be important to your business in the future? So, how many of you are doing some sort of social networking right now? How many of you are not doing something but feel like you should be? Okay and how many of you feel like managing this new opportunity of social networking a bit daunting? Like you don’t have room for one more thing on your plate? “ The evolution of something in our culture can create more personal bandwidth” Movie story. Here’s what we’ll be discussing today.
- It’s here…: I know that sounds trite. And I don’t mean it to be, but it’s true. It’s like when ppl were pitching the Internet back in the mid-90s. It’s here. It just is. Ppl wanted to see if it catches one, etc. They call it Web 2.0 for a reason. And it’s the foundation for Web 3.0, which is another talk altogether. About people: We are connecting online and alarming rates. 200 million on facebook and counting. The people connection for me is about access. The ISES community has given me access to all of you through the blog and has enabled me to facilitate conversations with people across the US. Including Ryan at Be Events. He and I synched up over ISES community, then Twitter then phone to make sure we had the overlap right for our presentations. Trust: Transparency Dialogue: Some of these things relate to all social networking, ISES community and beyond. Learn about customers: Are they posting in the community? Have they commented on things? How many people do business with other ISES members? Could the ISES community help you facilitate more?
- This is relevant because I’m not here to say ISES community is the end all. It needs to dovetail with these other entities for you. And ISES is working hard to make sure they find the appropriate synergies. The other thing is that the ISES community provides most of these functions within it. By the way, the way I’m connected to ISES and our community is that my company Vanguard Technology is…
- Things that make the ISES experience unique…. Private social network. Unlike FB where people have to join FB then join your group and there is no guarantee these people are in your industry now. Maybe they just aspire to be someday. Do you need to find some common ground with a future partner? Well if you’re both members of ISES the community could be a great place to find that. Unique experience. It’s not like LinkedIn or Myspace. It is a unique experience to the industry.
- Untapped – you can make this community what you want it to be. It’s not facebook. It’s an opp for you to create trust. To get new customers, get a new vendor, influence people in the industry. This is your community. Blog about something. Post some killer pictures of your last event. Maybe you’re new to ISES. What better way than to get inside this community and show your stuff. Transparency: Show people what’s like on the inside of your organization. Cachet: show your stuff. Comment on a blog, show a picture, upload a video. Credibility: ISES is going to have business profile pages soon so you’ll be able to create like facebook page there. That’s a way to build some credbility with the community. Influence: Create and moderate a group about a topic close to your heart. Or one you’re in an expert in. Tell the world how you see things. Influence.
- Groundswell Take a look around. See the lay of the land. Goals: Don’t go ad hoc. Are you looking to create awareness? Share your opinion? Display your work? Understand what you want to accomplish. Success: Have metrics. Iteratively: Patience. Give examples of how people could leverage the tools.
- Go over the three main modules.
