Community Forestry International, Inc. (CFI)
assists rural communities to stabilize and regenerate
forests by helping policy makers, development

• CFI projects support forest dependent communities
as sustainable managers of the world’s forest ecosystems.
• Provide financial incentives for reducing emissions from
deforestation and forest degradation .
• CFI is involved with helping to support community-based
projects to alleviate poverty and increase greater
sustainability of forest resources.

• Our vision is of a peaceful and sustainable world based on
societies living in harmony with nature.
• They believe that “our children's future will be better
because of what we do”.
• They led to a massive increase in large-scale plantations,
triggering further deforestation.
• It works with local communities and indigenous peoples to
conserve forests, and strengthen communities’ rights and
community management of forests.
• We urgently need to protect the forests in our fight for a
sustainable future for everybody.
To reduce poverty amongst indigenous peoples and
other forest-dependent peoples, by advocating the
rights of these peoples as a basis for forest policy
and addressing the direct and underlying causes of
deforestation and forest degradation.
• To raise public awareness on deforestation and forest
degradation.

IT’S ROLE
 To generate science-based knowledge about the diverse
benefits - both direct and indirect – of agro forestry, or
trees in farming systems.
 To disseminate this knowledge to develop policy options
and promote policies and practices that improve
livelihoods and benefit the environment.
IUFRO is “the global network for forest science
cooperation”. It unites more than 15,000 scientists
in almost 700 Member Organizations in over 110
countries, and is a member of ICSU. Scientists
cooperate in IUFRO on a voluntary basis.

related challenges for the benefit of forests and
people worldwide.

IT'S ROLE
– Its main tools for achieving responsible management of the forests
are standard setting, certification and labelling of forest products.
– Aims to “provide businesses and consumers with a tool to influence
how forests worldwide are managed”.
– Its mission is to “promote environmentally appropriate, socially
beneficial and economically viable management of the world's
forests”.
– It works towards six program areas: Forests, Chain of Custody,
Social Policy, Monitoring and Evaluation, Quality Assurance and
Ecosystem Services.
