  5. Now you have a solid foundation about blended learning: what it is and why it’s good for the learners. So who uses it? Most everyone, including K-12, higher ed, government, and corporate training. Why?

The primary benefits of blended learning include:Cost reduction (no need to pay for travel except for essential face-to-face training components)To increase reach and volume (get the people in remote locations more easily engaged and participating in training when they may not otherwise be)To keep pace with rapid changes in training curriculum and technology (it’s easier to make changes to electronic training delivery methods; it’s quick, can be done with fewer resources)More engaging learning environments (can focus the F2F training on simulations, interactions, practice rather than lecturing on the history of dirt)But with these benefits come challenges.

  8. Benefits of social media in a blended learning programUse current technology; your learners are already doing so, so take advantage of that. It’s implemented so using it will mean minimal financial impact.People learn more when they can collaborate with others; social media is all about collaborating.
  9. Demographics of workers are changing, as is the technology landscape. This creates a “Perfect Storm” for mobile learning to flourish (Ambient Insight, LLC, 2008)Darren: Do you know how many people have mobile phones in the world? As of December 2010, approximately 76% of them have connected mobile phones. About 20% have data plans. Julie: Think about it; those people have access to information regularly. They sleep with their phones, have them on the table at restaurants, etc.

In 2011 the training community expects that blended learning will be the primary delivery strategy employed in corporate training.Subjects will cover everything, from new employee orientation to process to sales to compliance trainingSome blended learning programs could look like this….but your specific program depends on your business needs, culture, expectations and technology capabilities. Does it make sense for your organization and will it provide value?
  11. Digging deeper, blended learning is a cost effective and efficient way to support your sales staff. Blended learning supports product training in many ways, like….(above bullet list)What other ways have you used blended learning? (ask people to send in their ideas)
  12. So how did it work? We completed a project that is blended eLearning and mobile learning. H
  13. These were independent courses, so the learners did not need to take the eWorkshop to get the necessary information. This worked well, as the client could not guarantee when the learners would be able to take the eWorkshop, but they wanted them to have the necessary information.
  14. Mobile platform: The majority of users use a BlackBerry; but the version runs the gammut from brand new to 3 years old. We developed a web based course, but various options on the BB needed to be turned on. This was a risk going in, unfortunately it was realized. LMS:The existing WM LMS does not readily support mobile courseware. Users need to log into the LMS from their BB to access the course, it’s cumbersome and didn’t always work for some users. Also, the LMS couldn’t report on course completion.
