management at home, in school
and in the community.
TOPIC:
Proper Waste Management
Read each item carefully. Draw a heart if the statement
describes a healthy community and a box if it does NOT describe a
healthy community.
1. In a healthy community, pet animals are confined within the
premises of their homes and are not allowed to stray in the streets.
2. Members of the community participate in development and
execution of activities.
3. People dump their garbage in creeks and rivers or in any vacant
area.
4. People plant ornamental and flowering plants in their yards and
along streets, these are part of their ‘greening’ program and to make
the community environment pleasing to the eyes.
5. Members of the community participate in development and
execution of activities.
What is healthy community?
-It is a place where people come together to
make their community better for themselves,
their family, their friends, their neighbors, and
others
-Safe, clean, good air and water quality,
with flexible spaces, has a warm atmosphere
and free from abuse and discrimination.
Analyze the picture and answer the following
questions below.
1. What is the picture is
all about?
2. Is this activity good for
our community and
environment? Explain
your answer.
3. As a pupil and a
member of the
community, how can
we diminish/stop this
kind of activity?
Choose the right garbage bin of the following waste
below. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper
Biodegradable Non-biodegradable Reusable
Recyclable
1. rusted cans 2. bottles 3. rotted vegetables 4.
newspaper
Proper Waste Management
-refers to the collection,
transportation, and disposal of garbage,
sewage and other waste products to
minimize its harmful effects on humans and
environment. Proper waste management is
very important in keeping home, schools
and communities healthy
Proper Waste Management
Some ways to reduce and reuse are:
a. Buy used items – clothing, building materials and
others.
b. Look for products that use less packaging.
c. Choose products that are returnable, reusable, or
refillable over single-use items.
d. Bring reusable bags and containers when
shopping, travelling, or packing lunches or
leftovers
Proper Waste Management
1. Proper waste storage –
Segregation of waste is very important.
Biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials must
be placed in separate container.
2. Proper waste disposal –
refers to different methods of proper disposition
of discarded or waste materials. Improper disposal of
waste has been responsible for the outbreak of
diseases and epidemics such as: cholera, typhoid,
viral infections, hepatitis, and others.

Refuse Disposal Method
1. Dumping - most frequently used, being one of the
cheapest when appropriate dumping places are available.
2. Burial - refuse is deposited in pits deep enough to allow
at least 2 feet soil cover to prevent animals from excavating
the buried waste.
3. Burning - this is usually done by burning the waste
materials on the ground or incinerators.
4. Composting- is a natural way of recycling decomposed
organic materials into a rich soil called compost.
5. Recycling- is processing used or waste materials into
new, useful products.

a check (✓) that do and a cross out (X) to if NOT. Write your answer on
a separate sheet of paper.

out of it.
3. Nicole uses a water bottle only once.
4. Mr. Pepito doesn’t care whether there are old tires are
filled with water in his house.
5. Franz puts biodegradable waste in a white plastic bag
and non-biodegradable in a black plastic bag.
Directions: Match the proper waste management word in column A
with their description in column B. Write your answer in a separate sheet of
