emphasis on
romantic love.
Pop music, (‘pop’ being
abbreviated from ‘popular’) is a
genre which originated in its
modern form in the 1950s,
deriving from rock and roll.
POP
Often Verse- Chorus
structure.
Borrows elements from other styles
including urban, dance, rock, Latin and
country; nonetheless, there are core
elements which define pop.
4. A form of popular music that evolved from rock and roll and pop
music during the mid- and late 1960s. Harsher and often selfconsciously more serious than its predecessors, it was initially
characterized by musical experimentation and drug-related or antiEstablishment lyrics.
Sometimes
also known as
“rock and roll”.
Rock

5. R&B features piano and drums,

A kind of pop music of black

R&B
It first emerged in
the mid-1940s.
The "Rhythm & Blues" term was created to replace
the name "race music," which until then was the
standard catch-all phase used in reference to most
music made by blacks at the time. After the "race
music" term was deemed offensive, Billboard
began using the Rhythm & Blues name.
6. Rap is a genre of African-American music
of the 1980s and 1990s in which rhyming

8. Music
Charts have Pop
I have decided to
music as the genre of my
magazine. This is because it
is my favourite genre of
music, and I haven't got a
lot of knowledge about
other genres. Furthermore,
pop music has a very wide
audience and is very
popular, especially in the
UK. This is backed up by
these music charts, which
show pop music/ pop
artists to be at the top of
them.
9. Possible names
• POP!
This is one of the names I have chosen. I have chose this because it is very clear to the reader what genre the magazine
is. It would be in capital letters so would therefore grab the readers attention. The explanation mark suggests to the
reader that the magazine is exciting and important.
• Pop News
This name would appear to the audience as being less exciting and more serious than ‘POP!’. But this is still a possible
name for the magazine, because it shows the reader what genre of music is being discussed in the magazine, and the
word ‘news’ suggests that if they read the magazine, they will find out new things which they didn’t know before, so
they would be intrigued.
• Mainstream
The word ‘mainstream’ means the ideas, attitudes, or activities that are shared by most people and regarded as normal
or conventional. As pop music is very well known and is very popular, it can be known as being mainstream. This also
would make people think that they want to read the magazine, because the name of it might suggest that everyone
reads it, so they would want to fit in.
• POP STARS
The name ‘POP STARS’ shows the reader that the magazine is about pop artists just by looking at the name. The fact
that it is in capital letters means that they would be drawn to it straight away .
• Pop Charts
This name could be used for my magazine because it says in the title what the magazine is about, and ‘charts’ relates to
pop music as they have pop charts like ‘uktop40’.
10. The next slide shows how I asked people what font
would look best on a pop magazine aimed at teenage
girls. I handed around the same sheet and they voted
by tallying next to the font they liked the best out of
the following:
11. 1.
Which font do you think would suit a
pop magazine aimed at teenage
girls?
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
12. Results of the tally chart
This bar chart shows the
results of the tally chart. I
asked 25 people overall, to
put a tally next to the font
they thought best suited a
pop magazine aimed at
teenage girls. It shows that
the majority vote was for
font number 3, and in
second was font number 5.
I will be choosing between
these two fonts for the
masthead when designing
my magazine.
13. Article 1
There is a photo centerd in the middle of the article, which looks
like it is a personal photo which was taken by Rihanna herself,
which readers like as they like to know more about celebrities
personal lives.
This is an article from
we love pop, featuring
the very famous pop
artist Rihanna.
The colour scheme
on this double page
spread is pink, blue,
white and black.
These colours are
also found on the
artists dress in the
medium long shot
picture.
This article is showing an interview which occured
between we love pop and Rihanna. In blue text is
the question they asked her, and in black text is her
answer. Throughout the article,
important/interesting information is highlighted in
pink, so that is stands out to the readers.
The heading for this article is a
quote from Rihanna which she
says in the interview; "I couldn't
wear a dress made of ham". By
using this quote and making it
take up half a page in capital
letters for the heading, it makes
the reader question what the
interview is about, as it is a
rather random thing to say. So
therefore the heading attracts
the reader, as they become
intrigued and read on to find
out more. The heading is in
white against a blue background
so it stands out to the reader
easily.
14. this article features
Article 2 Because band, you would
a boy
This is an article
from the pop
magazine Top Of
The Pops. It
features an
interview with
the boy band The
Wanted.
expect the colours to be
more masculine. However,
because it is trying to appeal
to a female target audience,
the colours used are pinks
and purples, which
stereotypically, relate to
girls.
This article has challenged
conventions, as it has a large image
in the centre of the double page
spread, whereas usually on a
double page, the large image is
either on the left or the right. Two
other images are also present,
another of the whole band, and one
of just one band member topless.
This attracts the girls to read the
article, especially if they are fans of
The Wanted.
The heading 'workout wonders' is bold
and fits the colour scheme. It is clearly
visible to the reader, so grabs their
attention. By using those words, it
suggests to the reader what some of
the questions are about. Young girls
would probuably be interested in
knowing how the famous boy band
keep fit and healthy, as they love to
know everything they can about the
private lives of celebrities, especially
ones they fancy.
15. Article 3
This is another article from We Love Pop. Similar to the first
article I analysed, this is an interview too, but this time
between We Love Pop and Jenna Coleman from Doctor
Who. In we love pop I have noticed that other than pages
full of pictures, there are not any articles which aren't
showing an interview with a celebrity. This suggests to me
that the magazine has realised what viewers are interested
in the most, and has therefore given me ideas about what
to put on my double page spread.
The main colours used on
this page are pink, blue,
white and black. This
shows the femininity of
the magazine and helps
show the target
audience.
Interesting facts and
quotes are highlighted
in pink so lure the
reader into reading
more.
The heading ' A brush with FAME' is
written in text which would be
recognised as being glamorous and
red-carpet-worthy. This attracts the
reader as they know it is going to be
someone glamorous and well known
who they'll be reading about.
This article is accompanied by 2 images. One of Jenna Coleman, and
one of her with The Doctor from Doctor Who. The mise-en-scene in
the picture with the doctor shows props from the set of Doctor Who,
therefore luring in Doctor Who fans. The picture of Jenna on her own
shows her looking glamorous, and looking like a role model to
younger girls. Therefore they would read the article to find out more
about her as they would aspire to be her.
