WHAT IS EMPLOYEE
WELFARE?
 Relates to taking care of the well being of workers by
employers, trade unions, governmental and non-
governmental organizations.
 Referred to as betterment work for employees.
According to the Royal
Commission on Labor
 Labor welfare is a term which must necessarily be
elastic, bearing a somewhat different interpretation in
one country from another, according to different social
customs, the degree of industrialization and
educational level of workers.

 Welfare activities will please workers and will make them
work well.
 PUBLIC RELATIONS THEORY
 Welfare activities to create good impression on the minds of
the public
 FUNCTIONAL THEORY
 Welfare activities provided to make workers more efficient
 SOCIAL THEORY
 Obligation on the part of the organization to provide for the
employees welfare
1.THE POLICING THEORY• This theory is basically meant for making the
employees and the workers availed with the basic facilities needed.
E.g- latrines, drinking water, enough rest and lunch intervals, etc.• In
this approach the government has introduced the practices to control
the exploitation of workers by their management/ employer. E.g-
heavy work load and less payments, very small time intervals, no
freedom of speech, etc.•
2.RELIGION THEORY - This theory believes in two key approaches:-
1) The Investment. &
2)The Atonement ( punishment)
The Investment theory explains the welfare benefits provided to the
workers is the current Investment made for future progress.“Man is a
religious animal”“Raw fruit today, flourish to tomorrow.”
The atonement approach says,
If the employees/workers are not getting availed with the benefits,
it is a part of there sins in the past.. They need to be atone for that
purpose.
3.PHILANTROPHIC THEOTY-This is a benevolent approach which has a
keen interest in “giving strategy
4.PATERNALISTIC APPROACH• In this theory, the owner, occupier or
the employer, holds the funds of the Industry in a trust. This trust
consist of board or trust members, and any amount to be spent in favor
of the employees.
Also known as the trusteeship theory of labour welfare.
5.THE PLACATING THEORY -Application of this theory is basically
meant for the organized and committable/ enthusiastic.• This
theory enables the employees to be pleased and oblige with the
provided welfare benefits.
6.PUBLIC RELATION THEORY-This theory basically focuses on the attraction
or goodwill for the industry.• In this theory the welfare benefits are directly
related to the impression of the Industry
7.FUNCTIONAL THEORY• This theory believes the high productivity/ outcome
of employees, by providing them the welfare benefits.
8.SOCIAL THEORY.This theory believes in well being of the society with the
employees.• Various provisions related to the society are to be established with this
theory.• Therefore this theory results in enhancing the condition / state of the
society

2.Organisation For Welfare
 The Factories Act ,1948 mandates that every
industrial establishment must appoint a welfare
officer if the number of employees is 500 or more.
 It is argued that the prime responsibility for welfare
should rest with the line manager or the HR manager.
3.Assesment Of Effectiveness
 Effectiveness of welfare must be assessed
periodically.
 Two methods of assessment :
 i) Trend Analysis
 ii) Opinion Survey
Fringe Benefits
The term fringe benefits refers to the extra benefits provided to
employees in addition to the normal compensation paid in the
form of wage or salary.
Objectives
 To create & improve sound industrial relations.
 To promote employees welfare.
 To motivate the employees by identifying & satisfying their
unsatisfied needs.
 To provide security to the employees against social risks like
old age benefits & maternity benefits.
 To provide safety against accidents.
Features of fringe benefits
 They are supplementary forms of compensation.
 They are paid to all employees based on there
membership in the organization.
 They help to raise the living conditions of the
employees.
 It may be statutory or voluntary.

 1. Legally required payments
- Old age, survivors, disability and health insurance (commonly
known as social security)
- Worker’s compensation

- military leave and pay
- maternity leave
- child care leave & sick leave etc.,
 3. Payments for time not worked
- vacations & holidays

  • 5. WHAT IS EMPLOYEE WELFARE?  Relates to taking care of the well being of workers by employers, trade unions, governmental and non- governmental organizations.  Referred to as betterment work for employees.
  • 6. According to the Royal Commission on Labor  Labor welfare is a term which must necessarily be elastic, bearing a somewhat different interpretation in one country from another, according to different social customs, the degree of industrialization and educational level of workers.

  • 23.  PLACATING THEORY  Welfare activities will please workers and will make them work well.  PUBLIC RELATIONS THEORY  Welfare activities to create good impression on the minds of the public  FUNCTIONAL THEORY  Welfare activities provided to make workers more efficient  SOCIAL THEORY  Obligation on the part of the organization to provide for the employees welfare
  • 24. 1.THE POLICING THEORY• This theory is basically meant for making the employees and the workers availed with the basic facilities needed. E.g- latrines, drinking water, enough rest and lunch intervals, etc.• In this approach the government has introduced the practices to control the exploitation of workers by their management/ employer. E.g- heavy work load and less payments, very small time intervals, no freedom of speech, etc.• 2.RELIGION THEORY - This theory believes in two key approaches:- 1) The Investment. & 2)The Atonement ( punishment) The Investment theory explains the welfare benefits provided to the workers is the current Investment made for future progress.“Man is a religious animal”“Raw fruit today, flourish to tomorrow.” The atonement approach says, If the employees/workers are not getting availed with the benefits, it is a part of there sins in the past.. They need to be atone for that purpose.
  • 25. 3.PHILANTROPHIC THEOTY-This is a benevolent approach which has a keen interest in “giving strategy 4.PATERNALISTIC APPROACH• In this theory, the owner, occupier or the employer, holds the funds of the Industry in a trust. This trust consist of board or trust members, and any amount to be spent in favor of the employees. Also known as the trusteeship theory of labour welfare. 5.THE PLACATING THEORY -Application of this theory is basically meant for the organized and committable/ enthusiastic.• This theory enables the employees to be pleased and oblige with the provided welfare benefits. 6.PUBLIC RELATION THEORY-This theory basically focuses on the attraction or goodwill for the industry.• In this theory the welfare benefits are directly related to the impression of the Industry
  • 26. 7.FUNCTIONAL THEORY• This theory believes the high productivity/ outcome of employees, by providing them the welfare benefits. 8.SOCIAL THEORY.This theory believes in well being of the society with the employees.• Various provisions related to the society are to be established with this theory.• Therefore this theory results in enhancing the condition / state of the society

  • 30. 2.Organisation For Welfare  The Factories Act ,1948 mandates that every industrial establishment must appoint a welfare officer if the number of employees is 500 or more.  It is argued that the prime responsibility for welfare should rest with the line manager or the HR manager.

  • 32. Fringe Benefits The term fringe benefits refers to the extra benefits provided to employees in addition to the normal compensation paid in the form of wage or salary.

Objectives  To create & improve sound industrial relations.  To promote employees welfare.  To motivate the employees by identifying & satisfying their unsatisfied needs.  To provide security to the employees against social risks like old age benefits & maternity benefits.  To provide safety against accidents.
  • 34. Features of fringe benefits  They are supplementary forms of compensation.  They are paid to all employees based on there membership in the organization.  They help to raise the living conditions of the employees.  It may be statutory or voluntary.
