Sodium valproate is a broad-spectrum anticonvulsant that has been used to treat epilepsy for over 40 years. It is well absorbed orally and has a half-life of 15 hours with monotherapy and 8-9 hours when used with other drugs. Its mechanism of action involves enhancing GABA inhibition and blocking sodium channels. Common adverse effects include tremors, sedation, gastrointestinal issues, and liver enzyme elevations. It is effective for treating absence seizures, myoclonic seizures, tonic-clonic seizures, and some partial seizures.
