14. More than 1000 wounds healed at BMC in the first year
Local heal rates exceed the national average
Non-healing wounds are on the rise, and the consequences for
patients are serious. Life can come to a standstill. In some cases,
chronic wounds will lead to serious health threats and extended
hospitalization. www.berkshirehealthsystems.org
Last year, BMC collaborated with Berkshire Surgical Associates
to provide a more effective way to care for patients with chronic
wounds. At the Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine,
our physicians and nurses have advanced training in the care of
difficult, non-healing wounds. They tailor the treatment to the
exact needs of each patient, and the results are excellent.
In one year, we’ve treated over 1,000 wounds caused by diabetes,
circulatory problems, traumatic injuries, surgical wounds and
other conditions for nearly 500 people. Our success rate exceeds
nationally recognized wound heal rates.
This means that physicians now have an outstanding local resource
in our own community to care for their patients with non-healing
wounds. And just as important, 500 of our friends and loved ones
can now lead healthy, active lives.
When time doesn’t heal all wounds...
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
For some patients with certain types of non-healing wounds,
hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an extremely effective treatment.
Patients breathe 100 percent oxygen inside a pressurized
chamber, which delivers a high concentration of oxygen to the
bloodstream and assists in the healing process. This treatment is
particularly significant to patients who are facing amputation as
their only option. During our first year, we have helped 50
patients with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The Center for Wound Care and
Hyperbaric Medicine is located
in the Medical Arts Building,
adjacent to the hospital. Our
Medical Director: patients and their families have
Richard Basile, MD, FACS. access to free valet parking at
the door.
