PROJECT 4 SCHEDULE: Weeks 4-5
Usability Test
The following schedule describes the steps you will need to do in order to compose
deliverables and the estimated time it will take most students to complete each step.
Estimated time you will need to complete this project: 16 hours and you have two weeks to
complete the project.
Steps Do the Following Time
1 Skim the steps in this schedule so you can plan how to manage your
time this week.
Read Handout and Web Articles (posted under handouts):
• Assignment Sheet
• How to Conduct a Cognitive Walkthrough by The Interactive
Design Foundation
• Usability 101: Introduction to Usability by Jakob Nielsen
• WARNING: although the above web articles mention using
test participants, you will NOT be doing that. Instead, your
cognitive walkthrough will be done by you alone. The goal is
for you to "become the user" as you do the test tasks.
Assignment Sheet.
Study slidedoc 1. About User-Centered Design and Usability Testing.
1 hour
2 Study slidedoc 2: Steps to Complete Usability Test and complete
steps 1 and 2.
Please note: it’s important to follow the requirements about creating
a data collection form or use the template under handouts on the
project page. You may also use a spreadsheet.
The purpose for this part of the project is to provide students with
practice in how to produce raw data if asked because a researcher
should always be able to do that.
Collecting data, scoring that data, and providing brief analysis notes
needs to be done BEFORE writing the white paper because in a
workplace setting, a researcher would not write the paper without
having collected the data first.

Steps Do the Following Time
3 Refer to slidedoc 2 and conduct the test (step 3), scoring and taking
notes in your data collection form or spreadsheet and remember to
take screenshots as needed.
My advice is to allocate this time in 1-2 hour sessions.

4 Study slidedoc 3: How to Write the Technical White Paper and follow
the requirements and guidelines and refer to your data collection
form to write your white paper.
To insert a data collection form that is in landscape orientation into
your white paper, use the Word Tutorials module for how to change
page orientation in a document file.
If you used a spreadsheet, use the link that explains how to insert
Excel data into Word.

5 Since you have already created a screencast, you will not need to do
a test recording unless you choose a different screencasting tool.
Study slidedoc 4: How to Create the Screencast of a Usability Test
Finding. Be certain when you write your script that you are focused
on usability and not just demonstrating how to do something.
Follow the requirements and guidelines in slidedoc 4 to write the
script, practice it, and record your screencast.
NOTE: you may want to do a few practice screencasts using your
mouse as you talk before doing the final recording because it’s a bit
more challenging to do this screencast than the last one.

2. Deliverable 1: Technical White Paper, submit a Word or PDF file.
3. Deliverable 2: Screencast of a Usability Test Finding, submit the URL address where your digital
media file is hosted. You may cut and paste the URL in the comment box or in your self-
