Preserving the Past to Protect our Future:

                               Thursday 7th February 2013

                     Lincoln Castle, Castle Hill, Lincoln, LN1 3AA.

This meeting will introduce delegates to case studies exploring critical issues for
collections the possible threats, risk and disasters and how to avoid them!

The day will also explore how museums and galleries can use digitisation projects to
preserve the use of collections and enhance engagement.

There will also be chance to take a guided tour around Lincoln Castle. Recently awarded
£12million from the Heritage Lottery Fund there will be chance to hear about exciting plans
for Lincoln Castle Revealed.




Lunch and refreshments are provided. A full programme and booking form are enclosed.

10.25am Welcome and Introduction

10.30am Magna Carta - Chris Woods, Director of the National Conservation Service.

Director of NCS, Chris is the consultant adviser to Lincoln Cathedral in the care and
conservation of its 1215 Magna Carta of King John, one of the four surviving copies of this
iconic document, recently given UNESCO Memory of the World Status. Caring for an 800
year old parchment manuscript of worldwide importance presents unique challenges and
requires advanced conservation and management skills which Chris will discuss.

11.00am EMMS-Using the EMMS Emergency Plan/REDS - Steve LeMotte, Executive
Director East Midlands Museum Service.

REDS is the Regional Emergencies & Disaster Support Service for the East Midlands. It is
a membership benefit of the East Midlands Museums Service. Since 1991, the REDS
Service has offered support, guidance and training in emergency planning and disaster
recovery. REDS Team members are available for callout to participating museums in the
event of an incident. Steve will share how it could help you and your museum.

11.30am Using the Risk Awareness Profiling Tool - Jane Thompson Webb,
Birmingham Museums

Jane will talk us through using the Risk Awareness Profiling (RAPT) A tool that enables
you, as a manager in a museum, library or other heritage institution, to assess the level of
risk awareness in your organisation. It provides you with a profile that indicates areas
where awareness in the organisation is good, and areas where improvement is needed.
RAPT also provides guidance to help develop better awareness of risks to your business.

12.00pm Lincoln Castle Tour

Guided tour of Lincoln Castle-Lincoln Castle has recently been awarded £12 million from
the Heritage Lottery Fund. This is chance to be guided around the Castle and hear exciting
plans for Lincoln Castle Revealed.

1.30pm Nightmare at the Museum: What happens when a theft occurs – Roger
Shelley, Principal Keeper, Derby Museums

Following a serious theft from Derby Museums last summer, Roger will explain what
happens when every curator’s worst dream comes true. He will set this in the context of
the recent spate of museum thefts, and consider lessons learned.

2.00pm Lincs to the Past: How digitisation preserves collections and creates
engagement with Cultural Heritage Collections - Mark McCree, Collections Access
Manager, Lincolnshire County Council.

Launched in May 2011,Lincs to the Past website offers a gateway to cultural collections for
everyone, 24/7, Mark the project manager of this initiative will talk us through the project.

2.30pm Digital Interaction: The use of websites and PDA’s to enhance engagement -
Antony Lee, Collections Access Officer, Lincolnshire County Council. The Collection:
Art and Archaeology in Lincolnshire has recently launched both a bespoke website and
handheld multimedia guides for the museum and Usher Gallery. Antony will look at the
increased visitor experience that these have brought, and the processes and issues
involved in producing them.

It provides you with a profile that indicates areas where awareness in the organisation is good, and areas where improvement is needed.   • 4. 1.30pm Nightmare at the Museum: What happens when a theft occurs – Roger Shelley, Principal Keeper, Derby Museums Following a serious theft from Derby Museums last summer, Roger will explain what happens when every curator’s worst dream comes true. He will set this in the context of the recent spate of museum thefts, and consider lessons learned. 2.00pm Lincs to the Past: How digitisation preserves collections and creates engagement with Cultural Heritage Collections - Mark McCree, Collections Access Manager, Lincolnshire County Council. Launched in May 2011,Lincs to the Past website offers a gateway to cultural collections for everyone, 24/7, Mark the project manager of this initiative will talk us through the project. 2.30pm Digital Interaction: The use of websites and PDA’s to enhance engagement - Antony Lee, Collections Access Officer, Lincolnshire County Council. The Collection: Art and Archaeology in Lincolnshire has recently launched both a bespoke website and handheld multimedia guides for the museum and Usher Gallery.
