Definition of Co-education
Co-education means the education
of boys and girls in same institute.
Historical Background
It was first introduced in Switzerland, but now it has
become popular almost in all Europe and America.
Most of the countries in the world have adopted this
form of education.
Pakistan have adopted this system, but it remained
a controversial issue.
Greek Philosopher “PLATO” said,
that Co-education creates a feeling of comradeship. I
advocate teaching of both genders in the same
institution without showing any discrimination in
imparting education.
Hypothesis for Co-Education
If institute provides positive/proper environment
for female students then number of female
students are more likely to be join coeducation
system.
 If institute provides negative environment(like
hooting & harassment) for female students then
number of female students are less likely to be join
coeducation system.
Need and Importance of Co-Education
When it is professional course
When students are mature
When students are observed under close supervision
and guided to develop healthy relations.
Better understanding of gender issues
When there is proper academic environment.
Greater participation of both boys and girls in the
development of good culture
More confidence in interpersonal discussions.
Co-Education System In Pakistan

colleges and universities have adopted the co-
education system. Some institute names are:

There are two supporting factor of co-education system

open separate universities on basis of gender
Good for under developed countries
Sociological Factor

young people to take their places naturally in the wider
community of men and women

Advantages of Co-Education
In co-education both the female and male perspectives
will be explored in class discussions and this is a very
important learning experience
Spirit of co-operation and healthy competition thrives
in the co-educational system.
Both genders get equal opportunities
of learning.
Advantages of Co-education
Confidence:
Students attending a co-ed school in Canada (both
independent and
public) feel more confident expressing their views in the
presence of
opposite-sex peers.
Respect:
Co-ed school students are more likely than students of
single-sex schools
to agree that their peers respect members of the opposite
sex.
Advantage of Co-Education
“Best of both worlds” Opportunities:
Students at co-ed schools agree that there are
opportunities to participate in activities with opposite-
sex peers and 62% agree they have the chance to
participate in activities without opposite-sex peers.
Conversely, only
32% of students at single-sex independent schools
report occasions to participate in activities with
members of the opposite sex.
.
Advantages of Co-Education
Strong participation of girls:
Girls at single-sex schools are no more likely than those at co-
ed schools to participate in class discussions.
89% of girls in independent co-ed schools ask questions or
contribute to class discussions compared with 87% of their
counterparts attending single-sex schools.
Girls in co-ed and single-sex schools report that they voice
an opinion regardless of peer approval in both environments
almost equally (66% co-ed, 67% single-sex).

What Quran says about men and women
 Surah al Ahzab (verse 32)
 Surah al Ahzab (verse 53)
 Surah al Ahzab (verse 59)
 Surah al Hujrat (verse 10)
According to Hadith
Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) said “The best row for
a man is the first row and the worst row for him is
a last row. The best row for a women is last row and
the worst row for a women is the first row.”
Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) said “None of man
should enter in the presence of women after this
day unless she is accompanied by one or two other
man”.
According to Hadith
Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) said “Never
enter in the company of women then,
A person asked Hazrat Muhammad
(PBUH) what about her male in law The
Prophet(PBUH) replied “The male in law
is the most dangerous”.
Why Co-Education Is Criticized?
Conservative people criticize the system of co-education.
 According to them, this system is against our
traditions.
They fear that co-education will develop immoral
relationships between boys & girls.
They believe that this system will be spoil both the
boys & girls.
But these arguments do not hold much water.
Co-Education and limitations of
Islam
Islam is not against the coeducation if Islamic values
be kept in mind
Girls are covers themselves (hijab)
Interaction with others while remaining limits.
Do not abuse the freedom of their parents.
