This document discusses the order of adjectives in English. It states that opinion adjectives come before factual adjectives when describing a noun. A chart shows the typical order of different types of adjectives: opinion, size, color, shape, nationality, and material. When using two color adjectives together, they are joined by "and". For three adjectives, a comma is used after the first and "and" is used between the last two if they follow a linking verb. Examples are provided to illustrate these rules.
3. ADJECTIVE ORDER
When we use more than one adjective before a
noun, we put the adjective that gives our
opinion before the adjective that gives
factual information.
Ex He´s a pleasant young man ( NOT a young
pleasant man)
Martin is pleasant= an opinion
Martin is young= a fact
4. ADJECTIVES CHART
Adjectives usually go in a particular order:
Example: A lovely big pink striped Spanish silk
shawl
OPINION SIZE COLOR SHAPE NATIONALITY MATERIAL
A lovely big pink striped Spanish silk
5. TWO ADJECTIVES TOGETHER
TWO ADJECTIVES TOGETHER ARE
OFTEN JOINED BY AND WHEN THERE
ARE TWO COLOUR ADJECTIVES.
IF THEY ARE TWO OTHER ADJECTIVES
THERE´S NO AND.
Ex: He also bought a red and gold duvet
cover to go on the bed.
Ex: He´s got short fair hair.
6. THREE ADJECTIVES
When there are three adjectives before
the noun you don´t use AND.
Ex: A lively warm intelligent woman
When there are three adjectives alone
after a link verb, we usually put a
comma after the first, and AND
between the last two.
Ex: She´s lively, warm and intelligent
