Introduction
This Insights Discovery profile is based on William Brown’s responses to the Insights
Preference Evaluator which was completed on 14/09/2012.
The origins of personality theory can be traced back to the fifth century BC, when Hippocrates
identified four distinct energies exhibited by different people. The Insights System is built
around the model of personality first identified by the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung.
This model was published in his 1921 work “Psychological Types” and developed in
subsequent writings. Jung’s work on personality and preferences has since been adopted as
the seminal work in understanding personality and has been the subject of study for thousands
of researchers to the present day.
Using Jung's typology, this Insights Discovery profile offers a framework for
self-understanding and development. Research suggests that a good understanding of self,
both strengths and weaknesses, enables individuals to develop effective strategies for
interaction and can help them to better respond to the demands of their environment.
Generated from several hundred thousand permutations of statements, this profile is unique. It
reports statements which your Evaluator responses indicate may apply to you. Modify or
delete any statement which does not apply, but only after checking with colleagues or friends
to identify whether the statement may be a “blind spot” for you.
Use this profile pro-actively. That is, identify the key areas in which you can develop and take
action. Share the important aspects with friends and colleagues. Ask for feedback from them
on areas which seem particularly relevant for you and develop an action plan for growth
personally and interpersonally.

Overview
These statements provide a broad understanding of William’s work style. Use this section to
gain a better understanding of his approaches to his activities, relationships and decisions.
Personal Style
William is stimulated by challenges and often shows ingenuity in meeting them. William has a
natural instinct for spotting trends and future developments, often before others are even
remotely aware of them. His aim is to fit all the pieces of the jigsaw together into a complete
picture, but for William the jigsaw keeps expanding with the discovery of every new piece.
When an inspiration materialises, he will throw himself into it completely. He needs to learn to
see things through to completion or get other people to finish what he has started.
As he tends to operate impulsively, he is adaptable and responsive to immediate challenges and
problems. His focus is on the immediate, resulting in a rather low tolerance for detailed
procedures and routines. William's natural intuition, fed by a drive to discover, brings with it
the readiness to work long and hard in the pursuit of an ongoing dream. William's interest,
enthusiasm and energy levels are high. He will dismiss negatives, being eager to accomplish
the task. He is often more excited about trying out a new idea or plan than he is of continuing
with an existing one.
He focuses attention on achieving success and acquiring status symbols as evidence of that
success. William has a real zest for living and enjoys company. His imaginative perception
gives him the energy to start lots of new projects, and keep a large number of balls in the air.
He may have great difficulty relating to people he sees as over-concerned with health, safety
and comfort issues. His ability to do detailed work extends only to that work which is
necessary to achieve a specific objective - that ability is there however, particularly if the goal
is clearly defined.
Seen by many as a gifted and natural leader, he has an entrepreneurial rather than a functional
management style. He prefers to improvise on the spot and get started right away, instead of
preparing and planning ahead. Fatigue and pressure from over-commitment may trigger
stressful reactions in him. Often his enthusiasm and drive makes him overwork. He helps the
innovative process by regularly coming up with ideas. Routine work and administration is of
little interest to him, though unexplored and unexpected elements of a job often aren't
considered work at all.
He is convinced of his own abilities and is constantly seeking environments where people will
appreciate him. His life will tend to be a series of initiated, but unfinished projects. Quick to
see the possibilities of new ideas and projects, William is outstanding at initiating these and
persuading people to support him. He is a good improviser who will go to great lengths to
please others. William enthusiastically and co-operatively joins in activities and can juggle
several activities at once.

Interacting with Others
Outgoing, friendly, challenging and sympathetic, William radiates warmth and fellowship.
Usually exciting for most of those involved, his activities do tend to leave some others
exhausted by the process. He is gifted with insight amounting to a quick wisdom and is able to
persuade others to follow. The easy-going nature and good humour that William displays
makes him an attractive companion. Consequently he is known by a large number of people
and enjoys a wide circle of acquaintances. Energetic, gregarious and sociable, his intuition
heightens his insight, vision, curiosity and desire for new ideas.
He usually finds working with another person, even on a less interesting phase of a project,
preferable to working by himself. William's work style is down-to-earth, assertive and
persuasive. William enjoys involvement in many activities, with a variety of people. He is
stimulated by doing the unexpected or the unusual. A creative thinker, William is generally
warm, enthusiastic and confident of his own abilities. He makes stimulating company with his
witty and interesting conversational style. He is at his best in co-operative roles that deal with
people and allow him to air his views.
When William is in charge of a project he offers the team long-term vision and the ability to
inspire and communicate that vision to others. He prefers what might be, rather than the reality
of what is already. Errors made by others may upset him and cause him to react loudly and
vociferously. He may sometimes experience a loss of enthusiasm and energy and also may
become uncharacteristically pensive under stress. He constantly seeks opportunities to talk
things through with others.
Decision Making
Open-minded, curious and insightful, William has excellent long-range vision. In
decision-making he may prefer to apologise for exceeding his authority rather than getting
permission in the first place. Work that uses his ideas to improve or start a project suits him,
but once these ideas get off the ground he prefers someone else to carry on with the details. He
is a quick decision maker and considers people within the context of the result of the task.
William expresses what he thinks are strong, decisive opinions in the hope that unresolved
issues and conflicts can be concluded quickly.
He is prepared to make decisions through group consensus. William's natural curiosity for new
ideas will bring new and fresh ways of thinking to the group. He is stimulated by difficulties
and is most ingenious in solving them. He is likely to exercise his intuition constantly on the
most important and challenging parts of a problem. He has a tendency towards making higher
risk decisions.
Decisions made on the basis of logic alone are not highly valued by him. He may
unconsciously manipulate the process to get his own way. He may often make decisions based
upon how he feels about a situation, rather than how the situation actually is. Because he finds
the information gathering part of a project the most tedious, he runs the risk of never getting
past the “start” phase, or once started, never completing. Optimistic, spontaneous, creative and

confident, he has an original mind and a strong sense of the possible. He is constantly full of
enthusiasm for new ideas.

Key Strengths & Weaknesses
Possible Weaknesses
Jung said “wisdom accepts that all things have two sides”. It has also been said that a
weakness is simply an overused strength. William's responses to the Evaluator have suggested
these areas as possible weaknesses.
William’s possible weaknesses:
Some of his ideas may be perceived as unrealistic.
Can be rather patronising or somewhat superior.
Generates so many ideas that chaos often ensues.
Knows the answer before the question is asked.
May jump, seemingly randomly, from task to task.
May miss others' reactions to his actions.
Overly dismissive of negative feedback.
May open his mouth and fall in.
Takes leaps into the unknown. May ask others to take leaps into the unknown without
explanation.
Will set unrealistic deadlines for himself and others.

Possible Blind Spots
Our perceptions of self may be different to the perceptions others have of us. We project who
we are onto the outside world through our “persona” and are not always aware of the effect
our less conscious behaviours have on others. These less conscious behaviours are termed
“Blind Spots”. Highlight the important statements in this section of which you are unaware
and test them for validity by asking for feedback from friends or colleagues.
William’s possible Blind Spots:
Tending to overlook other people's feelings and becoming blunt and insensitive in his desire to
be frankly honest, William rushes from one experience to another. In his enthusiasm to make
changes, William may not be fully aware of others' opposing views. William's tendency to
become distracted from finishing the tasks he starts sometimes may make him appear
indifferent or disinterested to some. He should try to slow down the pace when interacting with
others on a time bounded project. He may not appreciate how loud he can appear to some
others. In expressing his views strongly William tends to “railroad” many decisions.
While he can be charming, funny and entertaining, occasionally he gives the impression of
insincerity. Seen by many as a smooth talking persuader, William may seem indifferent to
people who appear to be less of an extraverted achiever than himself. He tends to be seen by
others as dictatorial and can be aggressive in arguing his position. Often after he has enjoyed
an initial experience, if necessary backup to attain the anticipated outcome is not forthcoming,
he blocks the experience from his mind and moves on. William's biggest drawbacks are
sometimes perceived by others as arrogance, impatience and insensitivity to others' feelings.
He may have difficulty accepting what others have to say if it varies from his own certainties.
When his hopes or dreams lose touch with reality, others may then witness a rather surreal
approach to life. As he values creativity and innovation, he sometimes ignores the standard
way of doing something because it lacks originality.

Opposite Type
The description in this section is based on William's opposite type on the Insights Wheel.
Often, we have most difficulty understanding and interacting with those whose preferences are
different to our own. Recognising these characteristics can help in developing strategies for
personal growth and enhanced interpersonal effectiveness.
Recognising your Opposite Type:
William’s opposite Insights type is the Coordinator, Jung’s “Introverted Sensing” type.
The Coordinator is a careful, cautious, conventional person who is diplomatic and sincere.
Coordinators tend to be very loyal, precise and disciplined with high standards and
expectations of self. Coordinators may appear to lack self-confidence and prefer to operate in a
structured and ordered manner, focusing on established guidelines rather than future
possibilities.
William will often observe the Coordinator procrastinating on a decision until all of the facts
and details are available. William may also see the Coordinator as a critical and ideological
thinker who will be quiet and reserved around strangers. Coordinators do not like stress or
chaos and tend to be rather private, requiring support and reassurance. They prefer to build
close relationships with small groups of people and like to retain the familiar and predictable.
The Coordinator becomes stubborn if pressured, particularly by William!
Coordinators are concerned with what is “right” and, to William, appear slow in decision
making. They prefer a steady-paced environment with little interpersonal aggression and they
tend to distrust outgoing people. They are motivated by schedule and order and are among the
most private of the Insights types. William sees the Coordinator as ever concerned with
efficiency, becoming stressed when others do not stick to tightly laid down schedules and plans.

Opposite Type
Communication with William's Opposite Type
Written specifically for William, this section suggests some strategies he could use for effective
interaction with someone who is his opposite type on the Insights Wheel.
William Brown: How you can meet the needs of your Opposite Type:
Ensure he has all the facts he needs before pressing for a decision.
Respect his knowledge of the job.
Accept that “reflecting time” is essential to enhance his performance.
Leave time for the relationship as well as the task.
Listen to and value his suggestions and contributions.
Present only solid and reliable facts.
William Brown: When dealing with your opposite type DO NOT:
Make critical comparisons in relation to other staff.
Invade his personal space.
Speak in generalities.
Spend too much time talking; he is more impressed by your actions.
Demand change that ignores his personal values and/or beliefs.
Go to a meeting with him without adequate facts and figures.

All rights reserved. www.insights.com http://www.insightsworld.com/ Introduction This Insights Discovery profile is based on William Brown’s responses to the Insights Preference Evaluator which was completed on 14/09/2012. The origins of personality theory can be traced back to the fifth century BC, when Hippocrates identified four distinct energies exhibited by different people. The Insights System is built around the model of personality first identified by the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung. This model was published in his 1921 work “Psychological Types” and developed in subsequent writings. Jung’s work on personality and preferences has since been adopted as the seminal work in understanding personality and has been the subject of study for thousands of researchers to the present day. Using Jung's typology, this Insights Discovery profile offers a framework for self-understanding and development. Research suggests that a good understanding of self, both strengths and weaknesses, enables individuals to develop effective strategies for interaction and can help them to better respond to the demands of their environment. Generated from several hundred thousand permutations of statements, this profile is unique. It reports statements which your Evaluator responses indicate may apply to you. Modify or delete any statement which does not apply, but only after checking with colleagues or friends to identify whether the statement may be a “blind spot” for you. Use this profile pro-actively. That is, identify the key areas in which you can develop and take action. Share the important aspects with friends and colleagues. Ask for feedback from them on areas which seem particularly relevant for you and develop an action plan for growth personally and interpersonally.
  • 5. Insights Discovery 3.5 William Brown Page 5 © Copyright 1992-2012 Andrew Lothian, Insights, Dundee, Scotland. All rights reserved. www.insights.com http://www.insightsworld.com/ Overview These statements provide a broad understanding of William’s work style. Use this section to gain a better understanding of his approaches to his activities, relationships and decisions. Personal Style William is stimulated by challenges and often shows ingenuity in meeting them. William has a natural instinct for spotting trends and future developments, often before others are even remotely aware of them. His aim is to fit all the pieces of the jigsaw together into a complete picture, but for William the jigsaw keeps expanding with the discovery of every new piece. When an inspiration materialises, he will throw himself into it completely. He needs to learn to see things through to completion or get other people to finish what he has started. As he tends to operate impulsively, he is adaptable and responsive to immediate challenges and problems. His focus is on the immediate, resulting in a rather low tolerance for detailed procedures and routines. William's natural intuition, fed by a drive to discover, brings with it the readiness to work long and hard in the pursuit of an ongoing dream. William's interest, enthusiasm and energy levels are high. He will dismiss negatives, being eager to accomplish the task. He is often more excited about trying out a new idea or plan than he is of continuing with an existing one. He focuses attention on achieving success and acquiring status symbols as evidence of that success. William has a real zest for living and enjoys company. His imaginative perception gives him the energy to start lots of new projects, and keep a large number of balls in the air. He may have great difficulty relating to people he sees as over-concerned with health, safety and comfort issues. His ability to do detailed work extends only to that work which is necessary to achieve a specific objective - that ability is there however, particularly if the goal is clearly defined. Seen by many as a gifted and natural leader, he has an entrepreneurial rather than a functional management style. He prefers to improvise on the spot and get started right away, instead of preparing and planning ahead. Fatigue and pressure from over-commitment may trigger stressful reactions in him. Often his enthusiasm and drive makes him overwork. He helps the innovative process by regularly coming up with ideas. Routine work and administration is of little interest to him, though unexplored and unexpected elements of a job often aren't considered work at all. He is convinced of his own abilities and is constantly seeking environments where people will appreciate him. His life will tend to be a series of initiated, but unfinished projects. Quick to see the possibilities of new ideas and projects, William is outstanding at initiating these and persuading people to support him. He is a good improviser who will go to great lengths to please others. William enthusiastically and co-operatively joins in activities and can juggle several activities at once.
  • 6. Insights Discovery 3.5 William Brown Page 6 © Copyright 1992-2012 Andrew Lothian, Insights, Dundee, Scotland. All rights reserved. www.insights.com http://www.insightsworld.com/ Interacting with Others Outgoing, friendly, challenging and sympathetic, William radiates warmth and fellowship. Usually exciting for most of those involved, his activities do tend to leave some others exhausted by the process. He is gifted with insight amounting to a quick wisdom and is able to persuade others to follow. The easy-going nature and good humour that William displays makes him an attractive companion. Consequently he is known by a large number of people and enjoys a wide circle of acquaintances. Energetic, gregarious and sociable, his intuition heightens his insight, vision, curiosity and desire for new ideas. He usually finds working with another person, even on a less interesting phase of a project, preferable to working by himself. William's work style is down-to-earth, assertive and persuasive. William enjoys involvement in many activities, with a variety of people. He is stimulated by doing the unexpected or the unusual. A creative thinker, William is generally warm, enthusiastic and confident of his own abilities. He makes stimulating company with his witty and interesting conversational style. He is at his best in co-operative roles that deal with people and allow him to air his views. When William is in charge of a project he offers the team long-term vision and the ability to inspire and communicate that vision to others. He prefers what might be, rather than the reality of what is already. Errors made by others may upset him and cause him to react loudly and vociferously. He may sometimes experience a loss of enthusiasm and energy and also may become uncharacteristically pensive under stress. He constantly seeks opportunities to talk things through with others. Decision Making Open-minded, curious and insightful, William has excellent long-range vision. In decision-making he may prefer to apologise for exceeding his authority rather than getting permission in the first place. Work that uses his ideas to improve or start a project suits him, but once these ideas get off the ground he prefers someone else to carry on with the details. He is a quick decision maker and considers people within the context of the result of the task. William expresses what he thinks are strong, decisive opinions in the hope that unresolved issues and conflicts can be concluded quickly. He is prepared to make decisions through group consensus. William's natural curiosity for new ideas will bring new and fresh ways of thinking to the group. He is stimulated by difficulties and is most ingenious in solving them. He is likely to exercise his intuition constantly on the most important and challenging parts of a problem. He has a tendency towards making higher risk decisions. Decisions made on the basis of logic alone are not highly valued by him. He may unconsciously manipulate the process to get his own way. He may often make decisions based upon how he feels about a situation, rather than how the situation actually is. Because he finds the information gathering part of a project the most tedious, he runs the risk of never getting past the “start” phase, or once started, never completing. Optimistic, spontaneous, creative and

All rights reserved. www.insights.com http://www.insightsworld.com/ Key Strengths & Weaknesses Possible Weaknesses Jung said “wisdom accepts that all things have two sides”. It has also been said that a weakness is simply an overused strength. William's responses to the Evaluator have suggested these areas as possible weaknesses. William’s possible weaknesses: Some of his ideas may be perceived as unrealistic. May ask others to take leaps into the unknown without explanation. Will set unrealistic deadlines for himself and others. Personal Notes

Allow time for fun and socialising. Provide for both flexibility and structure within the meeting. Provide dates and timescales for completion. • 12. Insights Discovery 3.5 William Brown Page 12 © Copyright 1992-2012 Andrew Lothian, Insights, Dundee, Scotland. All rights reserved. www.insights.com http://www.insightsworld.com/ Communication Barriers to Effective Communication Certain strategies will be less effective when communicating with William. Some of the things to be avoided are listed below. This information can be used to develop powerful, effective and mutually acceptable communication strategies. When communicating with William, DO NOT: Create a hostile environment devoid of feelings. Forget to offer praise and recognition when it is due. Challenge his perception of himself. Be surprised if he breaks the rules. Get carried away by his enthusiasm. Fail to recognise his best personal achievements. Be vague or leave things open to interpretation. Restrict or restrain his natural exuberance. Forget to recognise him personally in a job well done. Approach him with foregone conclusions. Involve him in formal, lengthy or tedious meetings. Impose final judgements on his views and opinions. Personal Notes
  • 13. Insights Discovery 3.5 William Brown Page 13 © Copyright 1992-2012 Andrew Lothian, Insights, Dundee, Scotland. All rights reserved. www.insights.com http://www.insightsworld.com/ Possible Blind Spots Our perceptions of self may be different to the perceptions others have of us. We project who we are onto the outside world through our “persona” and are not always aware of the effect our less conscious behaviours have on others. These less conscious behaviours are termed “Blind Spots”. Highlight the important statements in this section of which you are unaware and test them for validity by asking for feedback from friends or colleagues. William’s possible Blind Spots: Tending to overlook other people's feelings and becoming blunt and insensitive in his desire to be frankly honest, William rushes from one experience to another. In his enthusiasm to make changes, William may not be fully aware of others' opposing views. William's tendency to become distracted from finishing the tasks he starts sometimes may make him appear indifferent or disinterested to some. He should try to slow down the pace when interacting with others on a time bounded project. He may not appreciate how loud he can appear to some others. In expressing his views strongly William tends to “railroad” many decisions. While he can be charming, funny and entertaining, occasionally he gives the impression of insincerity. Seen by many as a smooth talking persuader, William may seem indifferent to people who appear to be less of an extraverted achiever than himself. He tends to be seen by others as dictatorial and can be aggressive in arguing his position. Often after he has enjoyed an initial experience, if necessary backup to attain the anticipated outcome is not forthcoming, he blocks the experience from his mind and moves on. William's biggest drawbacks are sometimes perceived by others as arrogance, impatience and insensitivity to others' feelings. He may have difficulty accepting what others have to say if it varies from his own certainties. When his hopes or dreams lose touch with reality, others may then witness a rather surreal approach to life. As he values creativity and innovation, he sometimes ignores the standard way of doing something because it lacks originality. Personal Notes
  • 14. Insights Discovery 3.5 William Brown Page 14 © Copyright 1992-2012 Andrew Lothian, Insights, Dundee, Scotland. All rights reserved. www.insights.com http://www.insightsworld.com/ Opposite Type The description in this section is based on William's opposite type on the Insights Wheel. Often, we have most difficulty understanding and interacting with those whose preferences are different to our own. Recognising these characteristics can help in developing strategies for personal growth and enhanced interpersonal effectiveness. Recognising your Opposite Type: William’s opposite Insights type is the Coordinator, Jung’s “Introverted Sensing” type. The Coordinator is a careful, cautious, conventional person who is diplomatic and sincere. Coordinators tend to be very loyal, precise and disciplined with high standards and expectations of self. Coordinators may appear to lack self-confidence and prefer to operate in a structured and ordered manner, focusing on established guidelines rather than future possibilities. William will often observe the Coordinator procrastinating on a decision until all of the facts and details are available. William may also see the Coordinator as a critical and ideological thinker who will be quiet and reserved around strangers. Coordinators do not like stress or chaos and tend to be rather private, requiring support and reassurance. They prefer to build close relationships with small groups of people and like to retain the familiar and predictable. The Coordinator becomes stubborn if pressured, particularly by William! Coordinators are concerned with what is “right” and, to William, appear slow in decision making. They prefer a steady-paced environment with little interpersonal aggression and they tend to distrust outgoing people. They are motivated by schedule and order and are among the most private of the Insights types. William sees the Coordinator as ever concerned with efficiency, becoming stressed when others do not stick to tightly laid down schedules and plans. Personal Notes
  • 15. Insights Discovery 3.5 William Brown Page 15 © Copyright 1992-2012 Andrew Lothian, Insights, Dundee, Scotland. All rights reserved. www.insights.com http://www.insightsworld.com/ Opposite Type Communication with William's Opposite Type Written specifically for William, this section suggests some strategies he could use for effective interaction with someone who is his opposite type on the Insights Wheel. William Brown: How you can meet the needs of your Opposite Type: Ensure he has all the facts he needs before pressing for a decision. Respect his knowledge of the job. Accept that “reflecting time” is essential to enhance his performance. Leave time for the relationship as well as the task. Listen to and value his suggestions and contributions. Present only solid and reliable facts. William Brown: When dealing with your opposite type DO NOT: Make critical comparisons in relation to other staff. Invade his personal space. Speak in generalities. Spend too much time talking; he is more impressed by your actions. Demand change that ignores his personal values and/or beliefs. Go to a meeting with him without adequate facts and figures. Personal Notes

All rights reserved. www.insights.com http://www.insightsworld.com/ Suggestions for Development Insights Discovery does not offer direct measures of skill, intelligence, education or training. However, listed below are some suggestions for William’s development. Identify the most important areas which have not yet been addressed. These can then be incorporated into a personal development plan. William may benefit from: Exploring work that gets in touch with the inner self. Spending a few hours each week in the reference section of the library. Bringing greater balance and moderation into his life. Organising situations so they proceed exactly as he predicts and plans. Having things well thought out in advance. Experiencing from the past and focusing on the present. Withholding his opinions. Setting deadlines - then sticking to them. More awareness that he constantly moves from one project to another. Analysing procedures to identify overlaps and possible conflict. Personal Notes
