Comfort
1. Comfort
Text: 2Cor 1:3-4
Comfort does not mean mere pacification, or the lulling of
a man into a spiritual apathy (that is what man does with
medicine):
the comfort of God is the encouragement of God, the
motivation of the Most High applied to the human mind
and heart.
2Cor 1:3-4
3Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
4Who comforteth us in all our tribulation singular
, that we
may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by
the comfort wherewith we ourselves are perpetual present tense
comforted of God.

I. The Cause for Comfort.
2Cor 1:8-10
8For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of
our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were
pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch
that we despaired even of life:
9But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that
we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which
raiseth the dead:
10Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth
deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;
II. Clarification of Comfort.
3. Righteousness = Comfort.
Gen 5:29
And he called his name Noah, saying, This same
shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our
hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath
cursed.
2Pet 2:5
And spared not the old world, but saved
Noah the eighth person, a preacher of
righteousness, bringing in the flood upon
the world of the ungodly;
Refreshing = Comfort.
Gen 18:5
And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye
your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore
are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as
thou hast said.
Comfort is the balm needed to heal from death.
Rebekah becomes Isaac’s wife and he “was C. after his
mother’s death”.
4. Gen 24:67
And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent,
and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he
loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's
death.
The wicked are C. by plotting death.
Gen 27:42
And these words of Esau her elder son were told to
Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger
son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as
touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill
thee.
[Jacob] refused to be C. thinking Joseph was devoured by
an evil beast.
Gen 37:35
And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to
comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he
said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son
mourning. Thus his father wept for him.
Judah is C. after the death of his wife.
5. Gen 38:12

wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up
unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend
Hirah the Adullamite.
Joseph C. his brothers after the death of Jacob.
Gen 50:21
Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your
little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly
unto them.
Jesus gives Clarification
John 14:26
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the
Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things,
and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever
I have said unto you. KJV
Rom 15:4 For whatsoever things were written
aforetime were written for our learning, that we
through patience and comfort of the scriptures
might have hope. KJV
6. John 15:26
But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto
you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which
proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: KJV
John 16:7
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you
that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not
come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
Jesus explains how a peace with God gives man
comfort.
John 16:8-11
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin,
and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye
see me no more;
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is
judged. KJV
III. The classroom of Comfort.
7. 2Cor 1:4
4Who comforteth us in all our tribulation,
that
we may be able to comfort them which are in any
trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are
comforted of God.
Tribulation is the homeroom bell to call a Christian
to the classroom of Comfort.
No spiritual gift is intended to be horded.
Tribulation may be a bitter pill to swallow but the
power it provides goes beyond individual
improvement.
Paul was encouraged by God, so he can encourage
others.
1Cor 10:23
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not
expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things
edify not. KJV
8. 1Cor 14:5
I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye
prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that
speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the
church may receive edifying. KJV
1Cor 14:12
Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts,
seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. KJV
John 15:1-4
1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh
away:
and every branch that beareth fruit,
he purgeth it,
that it may bring forth more fruit.
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken
unto you.
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear
fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye,
except ye abide in me.
Rom 14:19
9. Let us therefore follow after the things which make for
peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
Eph 4:16
From whom the whole body fitly joined together and
compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according
to the effectual working in the measure of every part,
maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in
love. KJV
Col 2:19
And not holding the Head, from which all the body by
joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit
together, increaseth with the increase of God. KJV
In the midst of tribulation, the lesson to be learned
is found in verse 3.
2Cor 1:3
3Blessed be God,
even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of
mercies, and the God of all comfort;
If a man in tribulation blesses God, it proves his
hope has not been vanquished.
10. Blessing God is the first step to comfort just as
murmuring is the first step to despair and death.
If the mind is occupied in blessing God it is not
occupied with present problems.
The change in mental latitude results in a change
of attitude.
Conclusion:
2Cor 13:11
11Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good
comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of
love and peace shall be with you.
