1. The Deceitfulness of
Treachery

Text: Mal 2:15-16
15) And did not he make one? Yet had he the
residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That
he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed
to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously
against the wife of his youth.
The Holy Spirit knows you didn’t grasp
one important phrase so he will repeat it
in verse 16…
16) For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that
he hateth putting away: for one covereth
violence with his garment, saith the LORD of

2. hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye
deal not treacherously.
…take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not
treacherously.
The uncomfortable explanation to this treachery
is given in vs. 13-14
Mal 2:13-14
13 And this have ye done again, covering
the altar of the LORD with tears, with
weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that
he regardeth not the offering any more, or
receiveth it with good will at your hand.
14 Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the
LORD hath been witness between thee
and the wife of thy youth, against whom
thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy
companion, and the wife of thy covenant.

3. 16) …for one covereth violence with his
garment, saith the LORD of hosts…
The espousal custom of the bridegroom was to
cast his skirt or garment over his betrothed
(Ruth 3:9), showing his pledge to protect his
bride to be.
In our text a man has forsaken his wife and
made a pledge to “Violence” as his betrothed;
this is Treachery to the wife of his youth.
The Levites should have been the protectors of
the nation, by guiding them according to the
Law of God.
Jer 3:20
Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from
her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously
with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD.

4. Jer 5:11
For the house of Israel and the house of Judah
have dealt very treacherously against me, saith
the LORD.
To concern ourselves with only the treachery of
history, is comfortable because it causes no
conviction.
However, to benefit from the past we must
make application.

I. The Treachery of The Tongue
Rom 3:13-14
13) Their throat is an open sepulchre; with
their tongues they have used deceit; the
poison of asps is under their lips:

bitterness:
Ps 10:4
The wicked, through the pride of his
countenance, will not seek after God: God is
not in all his thoughts.
Ps 10:7
His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and
fraud: under his tongue is mischief and
vanity.
Ps 109:17-18
17 As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him:
as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far
from him.
18 As he clothed himself with cursing like as
with his garment, so let it come into his bowels
like water, and like oil into his bones.

6. Prov 29:24
Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own
soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth it not.
Titus 2:7-8
7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good
works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness,
gravity, sincerity,
8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned;
that he that is of the contrary part may be
ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
Matt12:36-37
36 But I say unto you, That every idle word
that men shall speak, they shall give account
thereof in the day of judgment.
37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and
by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.
5 For neither at any time used we flattering
words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness;
God is witness:

But though we, or an angel from heaven,
preach any other gospel unto you than that
which we have preached unto you, let him be
accursed.
Gal 2:14
But when I saw that they walked not uprightly
according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto
Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest

Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live
