H i , I 'm C ra i g
Sigl, the Mental
To u g h n e s s
Trainer.
I ’m s o g la d
you’re here!
I know how busy you are as parents
of yo uth athlete s, so I have
developed a simple, quick 3-STEP
PROCESS that will immediately build
self confidence in your child.
By the end of this webinar, you will
learn strategies to get them into a
powerful, peak performance state
anytime and anywhere they want it!
At a minimum, you can expect this
webinar to significantly boost your
athlete’s confidence and lower their
performance anxiety.
I u n d e r s ta n d t h e
pressure kids are under
these days. Everything
is so much more
competitive at younger
and younger ages and
o u r k i d s h ave to
compete against kids
from all over the world.
Not only for college
s c h o la r s h i p s a n d i n
professional sports, but
for their future careers
and jobs…and it seems
to be getting tougher
every year with no end
in sight.
For every kid coming out
of college in the U.S.,
there are 10 more from
other countries, who will
work for less.
Our kid’s self-esteem
gets destroyed by tough
coaches, worrying about
their mistakes, losses
and having rough
d e a li n g s w it h ot h e r
players.
You probably don’t have the time to
help them by reading a book on
mental toughness or spending big $$$
on a sports psychologist, but these
issues will hold your child back.

All coaches agree an athlete’s mental
state and confidence is as important
to their game as physical skills.
You are going to save your child
months of wasted hard work in
practice and training by developing
real mental toughness. The 3 simple
steps I am going to teach you here
will help get your athlete past
anything that could hold them back.
These 3 Steps will get
them to the next level
in both their sport and
their life. You are going
to be blown away!

How does that sound?
What I am offering here isn't the
rah-rah, go-get-um type of training
a lot of sports psychologists and
performance coaches teach that lasts
for only a short time...
The skills and tools you will learn
right here will change your athletes’
outlook on life forever!
What is unique about The
Mental Toughness Academy
is our entire focus is
directed toward teens and
pre-teens an d the
trainings are specifically
designed for them.
The big problem in youth sports is
that a lot of coaching and mental
game advice is for adult athletes.

That advice actually HURTS youth
athlete’s performances!

Yes, you heard me right, hurts their
performance.
Stay with me here
and you will get
the correct advice
that is tailored to
youth athletes and
builds real mental
toughness.

This simply means an athlete’s body
 is completely ready to perform.
This means eliminating nervousness,

3. LEARN TO MASTER THE
       PRESSURE
3. LEARN TO MASTER THE
            PRESSURE

They do this by learning to deal with
their difficult emotions like fear and
anxiety.
Before we start, let me quickly tell
you about my own journey into mental
toughness…
Here's a picture of me when I was in
little league.
As you
ca n s e e,
I'm the
s m a l le s t
on the
team.
In fact, I was the smallest player for
my age in the entire league. I led the
league in walks, because pitchers
couldn’t find my strike zone, it was so
small!
In high school, I was the shortest guy
in the entire 4000-student school up
through my junior year.
During those years of competing, I
was able to keep up with far bigger
and faster opponents by using my
smarts and honing my mental game.
Unfortunately, even though I learned
some mental toughness skills in those
years, I still carried into adulthood
some mental baggage about being
small.
I remember, very clearly, how the
baggage I carried hurt my abilities to
manage the $50 million operation I was
re spo nsible fo r at a
Fortune 500 company. I
h a d j u st e ar n e d a n
award for best in the
district, the first ever for
our station...
I was charged with making a major
c h a n g e t o o u r o p e rat i o n a n d
communicating it to my employees. I knew
they weren't going to like the change
one bit. So as I stood up there and
presented the “bad news”, I could
feel tho se sam e gut-wrench in g
feelings of being small all over again.
The mental garbage an d beliefs
formed playing sports as a teen, hurt
my ability to lead as an adult. Think
about it.
What m ental bag gag e have yo u
c a r r i e d f r o m y o u r y o ut h i n to
adulthood?
I urge you...Do not let this happen to
your child!
Today, since I was able to destroy
those mental blocks,
I now run my own
sho w. I lo ve
speaking in front of
audiences and have
even been on NBC
TV for my work
with youth athletes.
I'm a book author been on
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                ,

I've got a client database of over 3000

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             I THINK BIG!
Some of you may be
dealing with a child
who performs
beautifully in practice
and training, but at
game time freezes up.
They can’t bring their
practice game to the
big event.
Or are they dealing with performance
anxiety? I’ve worked with many kids
who physically shake, cry or throw
up, they are so nervous.
Or maybe they just
play tim i dly an d
lack aggressiveness?
These issues limit your athlete’s ability
to play their best, when it really
matters...in competition!
Helping young athletes get rid of these
problems is my passion.
I’m going to give you some strategies
and tools to deal with these issues
right now!
You are now going
to learn some of the
tools I use to take
youth athletes from
a state of total fear
to w i n n i n g state
championships.
Are you ready?
CONCEPT #1 Create A Powerful State
CONCEPT #1 Create A Powerful State

What does that mean? It means
using your mind to create feeling
powerful, confident and in control.
It’s much more than just “thinking
positively” and it must originate in the
athlete’s core being, BEFORE the
event begins.
Some coaches
  call this
   Heart.
Most young athletes
just hope an d pray
they will feel “up” for
a game and have no
idea they have internal
mechanisms to create
this for themselves.
What really hurts most athletes’
performances, especially teens, is
they ONLY allow themselves to feel
good AFTER a win or success.
They need to create those successful
feelings, BEFORE the success.

               This actually gives
               t h e at h lete a
               better chance to
               win!
I am sure you are wondering HOW
to do this…
For starters, athletes
need to learn how to
direct their focu s
an d impro ve their
concentration.
We teach them how to bring their
attention to the present moment.
What that does is it gets them out of
their head and into their body!
Let me take you through a quick
ex e r c i s e to ex p e r i e n c e it fo r
yourself...
               Think about a time when
               you were under heavy
               pressure...
               Notice how you feel as
yo u think abo ut that
               pressure.
Look away from the screen and see if
you can put all of your attention on
whatever your eyes see in the room
you’re in.
Close your eyes and focus on what you
hear…
Now go to what your body is feeling…
Turn your attention to your sense of
smell…
Now focus on your sense of taste for
a moment…
Now, allow your attention to go
between all senses right where you
are.

Can you do it with your eyes open?
Where did
                      those feelings
                      of pressure go?

Most people find after doing that
short exercise, those pressure feelings
are gone by directing their focus to
the present.
You can help your
athlete do this...

get them to observe and sense what
is around them when they are getting
tense.
For instance, if you are talking to a
swimmer, help her get present by asking
about the temperature of the water, the
air in the room,
how her muscles
feel.
You get the idea...
The problem is that
a typical teen
athlete thinks and
w o r r i e s w a y to o
much abo ut w hat
could happen.
They compare themselves
an d re play imag e s of
their last performance.
They worry if they will
repeat the same errors,
about what bad things
could happen and
question their abilities...
What they need to understand is
that this type of thinking is either
past or future-based and it creates a
poor performance state.
By learning how to focus, they block
out distractions and get into the
zone, preparing their body for the
task at hand.
CONCEPT #2 Getting Control Of Your
Thoughts
CONCEPT #2 Getting Control Of Your
Thoughts
It is an undisputed fact you cannot
make it to the top of any sport
without believing in yourself and your
abilities…otherwise known as “positive
thinking.”
Most sports psychologists stop right
there and try to just teach you how
to “think positively”.
That is not enough!
You also have to
d e a l w it h t h e
negative thoughts.
Eliminating negative thinking
h a p p e n s w h e n at h lete s
u n d e r s ta n d w h e r e t h e i r
thoughts come from.
To clear destructive thoughts the
athlete must feel empowered and
COMMIT to making a change. It
really is that simple!
S o let m e exp la i n
              where our thoughts
              originate…

Our brains operate much like a
co mpute r. We have a m ental
operating system, just like Windows
or Mac, that is always running.
It regulates all our
automatic functions
such as breathing,
digestion, balancing
yo u r e n e r g y a n d
stor ing your
memories, including
what coaches call
“muscle memory.”
Our operating system
                 comes with a lot of
                 i n fo r m at i o n a n d
                 programming right at
                 birth.
From then on, we start adding our own
programs and instructions, just like
when you install a program or game on
your computer.
What the athlete needs
              to realize is that they
              are in charge of their
programming. NOT outside influences!
They can take over the operation and
“program in” success! The athlete’s
operating system simply responds as
programmed.
There’s nothing complicated about it.
This programming happens the same
way they learn a new physical
skill...by repetition and correcting
mistakes as they come up.
But wait, I am sure you
           are thinking it’s difficult to
           “ p r o g ra m i n” p o s it i v e
           m e ssag e s, w hen the
           athlete has just lost or
           choked, right? Well this is
the time when it is important to help
your child “get some height” on the
issue.
What I mean by “height”
is to help them get a
              bigger perspective. Teach
              them to find the positive
in a “perceived” negative situation, then
t h e ba d fe e li n g s d o n ot g et
programmed into their mental computer.
The way to do that is
               to help them lo ok
               longer term and see
               the bigger picture...
Your wisdom as an adult will be very
imp o rtant havin g alrea dy live d
through many ups and downs.
Let me give you an example...
A father brought in
his ver y upset
teenage son to see
me. The boy was the
star quarterback, but
believe d his coach
hated him. It had
been a particularly
tough practice.
He felt his coach
had made him do
more pushups, run
m o r e la p s a n d
yelled at him more
often than any of
the other players.
After hearing his complaints, I looked
him in the eye and said, “That’ great!”
                              s
He looked at me as if I was nuts and
said, “Are you crazy? Didn’t you hear
me? I just told you this guy is the
worst coach I could ever have. ” I
answered, “Yeah, I know, isn’t that
awesome and let me tell you why.”
”If you did not have
this difficult coach
you would never have
come here for help.
Just think if you had
great coaches for the
next 4 years and then got a tough
one your senior year?”
“You wouldn’t be prepared and might
have melted-down around the time
you were being watched by college
scouts.”
“Isn’t it great that you are going to
learn to deal with difficult coaches
and get mental toughness training
right now, at this age?
By the time you’re a senior, you are
going to be the most mentally tough
player in the league and nobody will
be able to touch you.”
He said my favorite words:
“I never thought of it that
way.” I helped him see the
situation in a new light and
his entire attitude shifted in
an instant. I teach kids how to have
perspective regularly throughout every
talk and training session, so they then
learn how to do it for themselves.
O u r at h l e t e s l e a r n t o W A N T
competition an d dive into tough
situations.

That is when they really build mental
toughness and confidence and have
the ability to come out on top even
when faced with extreme adversity!
CONCEPT #3 Mastering the Pressure
CONCEPT #3 Mastering the Pressure

How do you master the pressure? It’s
really about overcoming Fear.
Fear is the Number 1 issue that
causes athletes’ problems and results
in their not pulling out their peak
performances when it counts.
What do athletes fear?
Failure, embar rassm ent,
disappointment and a whole
host of other difficu lt
emotions.
Fear destroys motivation,
because it causes athletes
to procrastinate and put
off working hard.
So how do we help
athletes overcome fear?
We teach them what
fear really is and show
them how to process
their difficult emotions
in healthy ways.
Problems occur when the athlete is
deathly afraid of embarrassment or
disappointing others.
WHAT IF they stopped fearing their
difficu lt emotio ns an d ha d the
internal confidence they can handle
a n y t h i n g i n c lu d i n g m a k i n g b i g
mistakes and losing?
What if they stopped
fearing “fear” itself?
Remember FDR saying,

  “The only thing
 we have to fear is
    fear itself?”
Here’s the key to making that a
reality. Are you ready?
Here’s the key to making that a
reality. Are you ready?
       “It’s an AND world”
Here’s the key to making that a
reality. Are you ready?
         “It’s an AND world”
What does an “AND” world mean? It’s
an entire change of attitude that
says I can feel this pressure AND still
play my best game!!
I can be in this disappointment right
now AND know that difficult feelings
are temporary, while I take ACTION
to improve from what I learned.
My athletes learn to be OK with
feeling their emotions. Once they
h a ve i n g ra i n e d t h i s i nto t h e i r
thinking, you know what happens?
They start going for it!!
They play with everything
they’ve got!
Pressure, nervousness and
anxiety gets diminished to
the point that it actually
feels more like excitement
and pumped up adrenaline!
They create positive beliefs
about themselves creating
positive emotio ns, w hich
make s it ea sie r to put
themselve s into a p eak
performance state. Mental
interference gets eliminated
an d tr ue p e rfo r mance
potential naturally occurs!
Young athletes playing
in fear tend to think
that embar ra ssm ent,
d i s a p p o i nt m e nt a n d
losing are the end of
their world!
Understanding its an "AND" world
moves them through that state of fear.
All World Class athletes feel pressure
AND still perform!
So, tell your athlete its OK to feel
pressure AND they can still play a

I imagine you are saying
             to yourself, this is all
             great, but my child does
             not always listen to me.
I understand how tough it is. I’m a
sports parent myself with 2 teenage
boys, have coached their teams and
worked with 100’s of kids. So I know
what you are going through.
As parents, you see
their issue s an d
problems firsthand
and it’s so obvious
to you what needs
to change in your
child.
Lot’s of parents first go
              to t h e i r co ac h fo r
              h e l p. M a y b e t h e
              feedback you got was...
“They just need to work harder, try
harder or need to toughen up.” So
you take that advice directly to your
child and they shut down.
Unfortunately at that point, nothing you
say will sink in. It gets blocked out or
at best, given lip service to. You see no
change, no action from your advice.
There is no need to feel bad or worry;
this is actually “normal” behavior for
most teens...

            What Do You Do?
How many times have you
tried to teach your kid
so m ething,then so m eo ne
else says the exact same
thing and your kid lights up
and totally gets it?
It’d be great if they could
get this learning from their
coaches...
The problem is most coaches either
don’t have the time to teach your kid
these mental skills or they simply
don’t know how...
Don’t leave this crucial
element in your child’s
personal development
to chance!
We’ve solved these problems with an

So how do you get this training for
your child?
We offer a very affordable 3-month
payment plan or a discounted full
payment option. Just click on one of
the buttons below.
You can see that this
training costs less than a
private tutoring session
each week or a family
dinner out on Friday night.
Isn’t your child’s confidence
and mental well-being at
least that important?
You already spend big
              $ $ $ o n e q u i p m e n t,
              t ra v e l exp e n s e s,
              training camps, private
              coaching, an d entr y
              fees.
I recently had a parent tell me they
paid $800 just for one baseball bat!
H o w m u c h h a v e yo u
invested in your child’s
confidence and belief in
themselves?
I’ve made it as simple and affordable
as possible. You get the same
training I charge
$800.00 for
my o n e-o n-
one sessions
with athletes.
I want to go over a few
questions I’m frequently
asked…
“What if this doesn’t
work?” or “What if my
child doesn’t like it?”
We believe so strongly that this
training works and your athlete will
love it.

We are willing to let your child use it
for the first 10 days for FREE!
They can go inside the membership
site right now and use the trainings.
If you aren’t completely satisfied you
will not be charged even one cent!
You have no risk with your FREE 10-
day TRIAL.
This gives you more than enough time
to see what the training offers and
how it works for your child.
Even if you decide not to buy, you
still get the first week of training for
free!
Click the “Add To Cart” button below
to get started now.
“What if they have a question or run into a
   problem, while doing the training?”
Inside the
membership site
there are
multiple ways to
a s k q u e st i o n s
for their
specific issues.
There’s an athletes’ forum, where
yo u r c h i l d ca n a s k m o n ito r e d
questions. As well as a “Comment”
system that they can get direct
answers from me and other members.
We are here to support your athlete!
If that isn’t a sweet enough deal,
allow me to add something here...
You will get interviews with some of
the other top youth sports coaches
and trainers in the country on how to
create mental toughness!
You won’t find a training like this
anywhere else that’s specifically
designed for youth athletes. The
guided visualizations alone are worth
the price of the entire training!
This package is easily worth $1200,
but we wanted to make it affordable
to as many kids as possible.
I am on a mission to
teach mental toughness
to 1 million kids, by
the year 2020 and give
them the to ols an d
strategies to live happy,
successful lives.
“How will I know that the training is
getting results?”
Your child will be
m o re cal m a n d
confident, before
an event.
They may have a different look in
their eye or stand with a more
powerful posture.
You will hear your athlete talk
excitedly about upcoming games and
events.
You will notice a change in how he
refers to himself.
You will see your child play sports in
the flow and finally reach their full
potential.
There will be
mo re p eace
and harmony
in the family.
They will be
able to project these new positive
behaviors and thinking to their future
career and relationships.
"
“Can I share my login and password
with other team members or friends?”
No, but the cost for the training
covers your entire household!
You can also earn back the cost of
this training and more by simply
referring it to other sport parents
and coaches. Find out more about our
affiliate program at our website...

“Will this training work
for all sports?”

ranging from trampoline
to kayaking to all the
more common sports.

  • 6. Not only for college s c h o la r s h i p s a n d i n professional sports, but for their future careers and jobs…and it seems to be getting tougher every year with no end in sight.
  • 7. For every kid coming out of college in the U.S., there are 10 more from other countries, who will work for less.
  • 8. Our kid’s self-esteem gets destroyed by tough coaches, worrying about their mistakes, losses and having rough d e a li n g s w it h ot h e r players.
  • 9.
  • 10. You probably don’t have the time to help them by reading a book on mental toughness or spending big $$$ on a sports psychologist, but these issues will hold your child back. All coaches agree an athlete’s mental state and confidence is as important to their game as physical skills.

  • 16. What is unique about The Mental Toughness Academy is our entire focus is directed toward teens and pre-teens an d the trainings are specifically designed for them.

  • 18. The big problem in youth sports is that a lot of coaching and mental game advice is for adult athletes. That advice actually HURTS youth athlete’s performances! Yes, you heard me right, hurts their performance.
  • 19. Stay with me here and you will get the correct advice that is tailored to youth athletes and builds real mental toughness.
  • 20. Let me tell you what my definition of Mental Toughness is:

  • 27. RESILIENT ESPECIALLY UNDER PRESSURE These are important life skills that only truly get developed from the inside out.
  • 28. Wo u l d n’t yo u h a v e loved to learn success an d emp o we r m ent principles when you were a teen? Think of how your life would have been different today...

  • 31. Here’s the bottom line. To achieve peak performances, athletes need to: 1. CREATE A PEAK PERFORMANCE STATE This simply means an athlete’s body is completely ready to perform.
  • 32. This means eliminating nervousness, tension, tightness or the opposite...being sluggish, lethargic or just plain slow.

  • 42.
  • 43. 3. LEARN TO MASTER THE PRESSURE
  • 44. 3. LEARN TO MASTER THE PRESSURE They do this by learning to deal with their difficult emotions like fear and anxiety.
  • 45. Before we start, let me quickly tell you about my own journey into mental toughness…
  • 46. Here's a picture of me when I was in little league. As you ca n s e e, I'm the s m a l le s t on the team.
  • 47.
  • 48. In fact, I was the smallest player for my age in the entire league. I led the league in walks, because pitchers couldn’t find my strike zone, it was so small! In high school, I was the shortest guy in the entire 4000-student school up through my junior year.
  • 49.
  • 50. During those years of competing, I was able to keep up with far bigger and faster opponents by using my smarts and honing my mental game. Unfortunately, even though I learned some mental toughness skills in those years, I still carried into adulthood some mental baggage about being small.
  • 51. I remember, very clearly, how the baggage I carried hurt my abilities to manage the $50 million operation I was re spo nsible fo r at a Fortune 500 company. I h a d j u st e ar n e d a n award for best in the district, the first ever for our station...
  • 52.
  • 53. I was charged with making a major c h a n g e t o o u r o p e rat i o n a n d communicating it to my employees. I knew they weren't going to like the change one bit. So as I stood up there and presented the “bad news”, I could feel tho se sam e gut-wrench in g feelings of being small all over again.
  • 54.
  • 55. The mental garbage an d beliefs formed playing sports as a teen, hurt my ability to lead as an adult. Think about it. What m ental bag gag e have yo u c a r r i e d f r o m y o u r y o ut h i n to adulthood? I urge you...Do not let this happen to your child!
  • 56. Today, since I was able to destroy those mental blocks, I now run my own sho w. I lo ve speaking in front of audiences and have even been on NBC TV for my work with youth athletes.
  • 57. I'm a book author been on , “Can a golfer play better without practice? That's the question we asked “What you have heard about me is true. I don’t practice.” several of our Top 100 Teachers, and their answer was a resounding ‘Yes!’ ” !"#$%&'()!!!"#*$%&#'(#)(*+,#-(.,#/(01#23(,+#*4'5(.'#6,$3'43+7### Bruce Lietzke, 20 wins on PGA and Champions Tour (2005, Links Letter) Golf Magazine, March 2004 p. 105 “It’s time to set a clear intention that you are !"#$%&'() interested in lower scores and that you are going to do everything in your power to allow &&&&+,&*$-.&/0&102#"&304"&5067&890"# that to happen-now aren’t you?” 8,$49#2490:#;5+#<='4>6,$3'43+#?@A+,' &&&&&&*:/;04/&<"$9/:9#) “Five minutes in an easy chair, mentally rehearsing the Morrisson Keys which afford you a successful swing, will improve your game more than weeks of hip-swiveling on the practice ground with a blank mind.” Alex J. I THINK BIG!
  • 58. Some of you may be dealing with a child who performs beautifully in practice and training, but at game time freezes up. They can’t bring their practice game to the big event.
  • 59. Or are they dealing with performance anxiety? I’ve worked with many kids who physically shake, cry or throw up, they are so nervous. Or maybe they just play tim i dly an d lack aggressiveness?
  • 60.
  • 61. These issues limit your athlete’s ability to play their best, when it really matters...in competition! Helping young athletes get rid of these problems is my passion. I’m going to give you some strategies and tools to deal with these issues right now!
  • 62. You are now going to learn some of the tools I use to take youth athletes from a state of total fear to w i n n i n g state championships. Are you ready?
  • 63.
  • 64. CONCEPT #1 Create A Powerful State
  • 65. CONCEPT #1 Create A Powerful State What does that mean? It means using your mind to create feeling powerful, confident and in control.
  • 66. It’s much more than just “thinking positively” and it must originate in the athlete’s core being, BEFORE the event begins. Some coaches call this Heart.
  • 67. Most young athletes just hope an d pray they will feel “up” for a game and have no idea they have internal mechanisms to create this for themselves.
  • 68. What really hurts most athletes’ performances, especially teens, is they ONLY allow themselves to feel good AFTER a win or success.
  • 69. They need to create those successful feelings, BEFORE the success. This actually gives t h e at h lete a better chance to win! I am sure you are wondering HOW to do this…
  • 70. For starters, athletes need to learn how to direct their focu s an d impro ve their concentration.
  • 71.
  • 72. We teach them how to bring their attention to the present moment. What that does is it gets them out of their head and into their body!
  • 73. Let me take you through a quick ex e r c i s e to ex p e r i e n c e it fo r yourself... Think about a time when you were under heavy pressure... Notice how you feel as yo u think abo ut that pressure.
  • 74.
  • 75. Look away from the screen and see if you can put all of your attention on whatever your eyes see in the room you’re in. Close your eyes and focus on what you hear… Now go to what your body is feeling…
  • 76.
  • 77.
  • 78. Turn your attention to your sense of smell… Now focus on your sense of taste for a moment… Now, allow your attention to go between all senses right where you are.
  • 79.
  • 85. Hearing Sight Feel Taste Smell Can you do it with your eyes open?
  • 86. Where did those feelings of pressure go? Most people find after doing that short exercise, those pressure feelings are gone by directing their focus to the present.
  • 87. You can help your athlete do this... get them to observe and sense what is around them when they are getting tense.
  • 88. For instance, if you are talking to a swimmer, help her get present by asking about the temperature of the water, the air in the room, how her muscles feel. You get the idea...
  • 89. The problem is that a typical teen athlete thinks and w o r r i e s w a y to o much abo ut w hat could happen.
  • 90. They compare themselves an d re play imag e s of their last performance. They worry if they will repeat the same errors, about what bad things could happen and question their abilities...
  • 91.
  • 92. What they need to understand is that this type of thinking is either past or future-based and it creates a poor performance state. By learning how to focus, they block out distractions and get into the zone, preparing their body for the task at hand.
  • 93.
  • 94. CONCEPT #2 Getting Control Of Your Thoughts
  • 95. CONCEPT #2 Getting Control Of Your Thoughts It is an undisputed fact you cannot make it to the top of any sport without believing in yourself and your abilities…otherwise known as “positive thinking.”
  • 96. Most sports psychologists stop right there and try to just teach you how to “think positively”. That is not enough! You also have to d e a l w it h t h e negative thoughts.
  • 97. Eliminating negative thinking h a p p e n s w h e n at h lete s u n d e r s ta n d w h e r e t h e i r thoughts come from. To clear destructive thoughts the athlete must feel empowered and COMMIT to making a change. It really is that simple!
  • 98. S o let m e exp la i n where our thoughts originate… Our brains operate much like a co mpute r. We have a m ental operating system, just like Windows or Mac, that is always running.
  • 99. It regulates all our automatic functions such as breathing, digestion, balancing yo u r e n e r g y a n d stor ing your memories, including what coaches call “muscle memory.”
  • 100. Our operating system comes with a lot of i n fo r m at i o n a n d programming right at birth. From then on, we start adding our own programs and instructions, just like when you install a program or game on your computer.
  • 101. What the athlete needs to realize is that they are in charge of their programming. NOT outside influences! They can take over the operation and “program in” success! The athlete’s operating system simply responds as programmed.
  • 102. There’s nothing complicated about it. This programming happens the same way they learn a new physical skill...by repetition and correcting mistakes as they come up.
  • 103. But wait, I am sure you are thinking it’s difficult to “ p r o g ra m i n” p o s it i v e m e ssag e s, w hen the athlete has just lost or choked, right? Well this is the time when it is important to help your child “get some height” on the issue.
  • 104. What I mean by “height” is to help them get a bigger perspective. Teach them to find the positive in a “perceived” negative situation, then t h e ba d fe e li n g s d o n ot g et programmed into their mental computer.
  • 105. The way to do that is to help them lo ok longer term and see the bigger picture... Your wisdom as an adult will be very imp o rtant havin g alrea dy live d through many ups and downs. Let me give you an example...
  • 106. A father brought in his ver y upset teenage son to see me. The boy was the star quarterback, but believe d his coach hated him. It had been a particularly tough practice.
  • 107. He felt his coach had made him do more pushups, run m o r e la p s a n d yelled at him more often than any of the other players.
  • 108.
  • 109. After hearing his complaints, I looked him in the eye and said, “That’ great!” s He looked at me as if I was nuts and said, “Are you crazy? Didn’t you hear me? I just told you this guy is the worst coach I could ever have. ” I answered, “Yeah, I know, isn’t that awesome and let me tell you why.”
  • 110. ”If you did not have this difficult coach you would never have come here for help. Just think if you had great coaches for the next 4 years and then got a tough one your senior year?”
  • 111. “You wouldn’t be prepared and might have melted-down around the time you were being watched by college scouts.”
  • 112.
  • 113. “Isn’t it great that you are going to learn to deal with difficult coaches and get mental toughness training right now, at this age? By the time you’re a senior, you are going to be the most mentally tough player in the league and nobody will be able to touch you.”
  • 114. He said my favorite words: “I never thought of it that way.” I helped him see the situation in a new light and his entire attitude shifted in an instant. I teach kids how to have perspective regularly throughout every talk and training session, so they then learn how to do it for themselves.
  • 115. O u r at h l e t e s l e a r n t o W A N T competition an d dive into tough situations. That is when they really build mental toughness and confidence and have the ability to come out on top even when faced with extreme adversity!
  • 116.
  • 117. CONCEPT #3 Mastering the Pressure
  • 118. CONCEPT #3 Mastering the Pressure How do you master the pressure? It’s really about overcoming Fear. Fear is the Number 1 issue that causes athletes’ problems and results in their not pulling out their peak performances when it counts.
  • 119. What do athletes fear? Failure, embar rassm ent, disappointment and a whole host of other difficu lt emotions. Fear destroys motivation, because it causes athletes to procrastinate and put off working hard.
  • 120. So how do we help athletes overcome fear? We teach them what fear really is and show them how to process their difficult emotions in healthy ways.
  • 121.
  • 122. Problems occur when the athlete is deathly afraid of embarrassment or disappointing others. WHAT IF they stopped fearing their difficu lt emotio ns an d ha d the internal confidence they can handle a n y t h i n g i n c lu d i n g m a k i n g b i g mistakes and losing?
  • 123. What if they stopped fearing “fear” itself? Remember FDR saying, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself?”
  • 124. Here’s the key to making that a reality. Are you ready?
  • 125. Here’s the key to making that a reality. Are you ready? “It’s an AND world”
  • 126. Here’s the key to making that a reality. Are you ready? “It’s an AND world” What does an “AND” world mean? It’s an entire change of attitude that says I can feel this pressure AND still play my best game!!
  • 127.
  • 128. I can be in this disappointment right now AND know that difficult feelings are temporary, while I take ACTION to improve from what I learned. My athletes learn to be OK with feeling their emotions. Once they h a ve i n g ra i n e d t h i s i nto t h e i r thinking, you know what happens?
  • 129. They start going for it!! They play with everything they’ve got! Pressure, nervousness and anxiety gets diminished to the point that it actually feels more like excitement and pumped up adrenaline!
  • 130. They create positive beliefs about themselves creating positive emotio ns, w hich make s it ea sie r to put themselve s into a p eak performance state. Mental interference gets eliminated an d tr ue p e rfo r mance potential naturally occurs!
  • 131. Young athletes playing in fear tend to think that embar ra ssm ent, d i s a p p o i nt m e nt a n d losing are the end of their world! Understanding its an "AND" world moves them through that state of fear.
  • 132.
  • 133. All World Class athletes feel pressure AND still perform! So, tell your athlete its OK to feel pressure AND they can still play a great game. Step aside and watch t h e m b e co m e totally f re e a n d perform in the flow.
  • 134. I imagine you are saying to yourself, this is all great, but my child does not always listen to me. I understand how tough it is. I’m a sports parent myself with 2 teenage boys, have coached their teams and worked with 100’s of kids. So I know what you are going through.
  • 135. As parents, you see their issue s an d problems firsthand and it’s so obvious to you what needs to change in your child.
  • 136. Lot’s of parents first go to t h e i r co ac h fo r h e l p. M a y b e t h e feedback you got was... “They just need to work harder, try harder or need to toughen up.” So you take that advice directly to your child and they shut down.
  • 137.
  • 138. Unfortunately at that point, nothing you say will sink in. It gets blocked out or at best, given lip service to. You see no change, no action from your advice. There is no need to feel bad or worry; this is actually “normal” behavior for most teens...
  • 139. Unfortunately at that point, nothing you say will sink in. It gets blocked out or at best, given lip service to. You see no change, no action from your advice. There is no need to feel bad or worry; this is actually “normal” behavior for most teens... What Do You Do?
  • 140. How many times have you tried to teach your kid so m ething, then so m eo ne else says the exact same thing and your kid lights up and totally gets it? It’d be great if they could get this learning from their coaches...
  • 141. The problem is most coaches either don’t have the time to teach your kid these mental skills or they simply don’t know how... Don’t leave this crucial element in your child’s personal development to chance!
