“I chose TU Delft
because while doing the
MOOCs, I could only
imagine the level of
expertise and facilities
the universities has.”

First Micromaster student
• First student completed our Micromaster on Solar
Energy Engineering in October
• He is originally from Lebanon
• He was admitted to the MSc Electrical Engineering
and started last September
• He gets a waiver for 16 of the 120 ECs

Interesting findings
• Campus students were the beta-testers
of the MOOC
• The MOOC was used to create a new
campus course
• Cycles of improvement at campus and
online
• Direct access in LMS vs. Interaction with
a broader community in MOOC
37. 37
Teacher’s Perspective
• Engagement of campus students
(Flipped classroom)
• Study the material together
• Most cases an increase in the final
grade and a decrease on students
retention
• More use of OER
• Professionalization of teachers
38. 38
Arno Smets – Solar Energy Course
• 30% more material than in the classical classroom
• Pass rates up from 71% to 89%
• Grades up from 6.51 to 7.09 (on a scale from 1 to 10)
• 69% of students preferred flipped classroom

48. Research goals
1. Gain actionable insights into learner behaviours at scale.
a. Data science
b. Big data processing
2. Increase our knowledge about learners by looking beyond
the learning platform.
a. Web data analytics
3. Design and implement interventions that enable adaptive
learning at scale.
a. Web engineering
b. Human-centered design
c. Learning technologies

with their learning performance relative to that of
successful learners?

50. Use of MOOCs for Research
The potential of solar energy:
• Light green is high potential
(best markets)
• Dark is less interesting
• Gray is no reliable data.
The probability of
blackouts of the
electricity network:
• Light color is little chance
• Black is more likely

A quick recap of the route that got us to where we are today:
Started with open education in 2007
TU Delft first non-angloamerican country to start with iTunes U
Start of O2E program in 2014, after the first MOOCs in NL
TU Delft leading role in Library open data
Now openness embedded in framework
Now, openness is strongly embedded in the TU Delft strategic framework, a blueprint for the coming 6 years at TU Delft
The framework came to life based on input from hundreds of colleagues.
As you can see (image is available on poster in the room), only looking at the statements regarding openness, there are many.
Now we are on a tipping point: openness in policy, but we still need to put it into practice (mainstream)
All our MOOCs are used on campus
All our MOOCs are used on campus
We offer MOOCs on the world-wide edX platform, next to world-class universities
Discussion with edX partner (high ranking) universities : How can our on campus students benefit more from our MOOCs and our collaboration?
A vision emerged: Virtual exchange of online courses
Main objective: Enrich the educational portfolio of our campus student, have them benefit from our Open & Online education
Hosting universities select MOOCs (TUD appr. 10), in total appr. 40
MOOCs in the ‘virtual exchange’ portfolio are offered to the university’s own students for credits as well
TU Delft students can use MOOCs as electives, in free minor or in honour’s programme
Additional assessment may be necessary to grant credits for the MOOC. Assessment is under academic conditions
Student doesn’t travel, but exam does
Each MOOC will have a max. number of students
3-year pilot: First MOOCs are offered from February 2017
All our MOOCs are used on campus

No traditional classroom
All setup for blended learning and especially for switching between project work and frontal instruction
